    Minimum Particle Size for Cyclone Dust Separator

    Perkins technology wish to separate small soot particles from exhaust gases, and the question posed to the study group was to determine the feasibility of using a cyclone separator to remove these particles. Soot is mostly composed of polycyclicaromatic compounds and results from the incomplete combustion of the diesel fuel in the engine. The average size of the particles formed in the engine is in the range 3 to 10 nm in diameter, but this is known to increase within the exhaust system. In the first part of this report we determine the minimum particle size that can be removed by centrifugal separation. The second part discusses the mechanisms for particle growth within the exhaust system in order to estimate the particle growth rate. In section two we estimate the minimum particle diameter that can be removed by a cyclone separator is around one micron. This estimate is consistent with current applications of hydrocyclones. The particle size measurements by Perkins Technology together with our estimates from section three, suggest that the soot particles are an order of magnitude smaller than this. Although it may be possible to remove some particles less than one micron in diameter with a well designed high-speed cyclone, we do not think it will be possible to remove a substantial proportion of 100 nm or smaller particles. The growth rate of the particles increases if the particles volume fraction or the polydispersity is increased. Therefore aggregation could be enhanced by the addition of larger particles (d > 1 µm) or water droplets (provided the water does not all vapourise) to the exhaust gas

    MOJAVE: Monitoring of Jets in AGN with VLBA Experiments. IV. The Parent Luminosity Function of Radio-Loud Blazars

    (Abridged) We use a complete sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected on the basis of relativistically beamed 15 GHz radio flux density to derive the parent radio luminosity function (RLF) of bright radio-selected blazar cores. We use a maximum likelihood method to fit a beamed RLF to the observed data and thereby recover the parameters of the intrinsic (unbeamed) RLF. We analyze two subsamples of the MOJAVE sample: the first contains only objects of known FR II class, with a total of 103 sources, and the second subsample adds 24 objects of uncertain FR class for a total of 127 sources. Both subsamples exclude four known FR I radio galaxies and two gigahertz-peaked spectrum sources. We obtain good fits to both subsamples using a single power law intrinsic RLF with pure density evolution function. We find that a previously reported break in the observed MOJAVE RLF actually arises from using incomplete bins (because of the luminosity cutoff) across a steep and strongly evolving RLF, and does not reflect a break in the intrinsic RLF. The derived space density of the parent population of the FR II sources from the MOJAVE sample (with L>1.3e25 W/Hz) is approximately 1600/Gpc^3.Comment: 31 pages, 7 figures and 2 tables.     The influence of resistivity and Hall current on the Rayleigh-Taylor problem involving two superposed fluids of finite density in the presence of gravitational and magnetic fields normal to the fluid interface is examined. Unlike the related problem in which the magnetic field is parallel to the interface, it appears that the dispersion relation does not exhibit singular behaviour in the zero resistivity limit.     High-school students' mastery of basic flow-control constructs through the lens of reversibility

    High-school students specialising in computing fields need to develop the abstraction skills required to understand and create programs. Novices' difficulties at high-school level, ranging from mastery of the "notional machine"to recognition of a program's purpose, have not been investigated as extensively as at tertiary level. This work explores high-school students' code comprehension by asking to reason about reversing conditional and iteration constructs. A sample of 205 K11 - 13 students from different institutions were asked to engage in a set of "reversibility tasklets". For each code fragment, they need to identify if its computation is reversible and either provide the code to reverse or an example of a value that cannot be reversed. For 4 such items, after extracting the recurrent patterns in students' answers, we have carried out an analysis within the framework of the SOLO taxonomy. Overall, 74% of answers correctly identified if the code was reversible but only 42% could provide the full explanation/code. The rate of relational answers varies from 51% down to 21%, the poorest performance arising for a small array-processing loop (and although 65% of the subjects had correctly identified the loop as reversible). The instruction level did not have a strong impact on performance, indicating such tasks are suitable for K11, when the basic flow-control constructs are usually introduced. In particular, the reversibility concept could be a useful pedagogical instrument both to assess and to help develop students' program comprehension

    Capture of a functionally active methyl-CpG binding domain by an arthropod retrotransposon family

    The repressive capacity of cytosine DNA methylation is mediated by recruitment of silencing complexes by methyl-CpG binding domain (MBD) proteins. Despite MBD proteins being associated with silencing, we discovered that a family of arthropod Copia retrotransposons have incorporated a host-derived MBD. We functionally show how retrotransposon-encoded MBDs preferentially bind to CpG-dense methylated regions, which correspond to transposable element regions of the host genome, in the myriapod Strigamia maritima. Consistently, young MBD-encoding Copia retrotransposons (CopiaMBD) accumulate in regions with higher CpG densities than other LTR-retrotransposons also present in the genome. This would suggest that retrotransposons use MBDs to integrate into heterochromatic regions in Strigamia, avoiding potentially harmful insertions into host genes. In contrast, CopiaMBD insertions in the spider Stegodyphus dumicola genome disproportionately accumulate in methylated gene bodies compared with other spider LTR-retrotransposons. Given that transposons are not actively targeted by DNA methylation in the spider genome, this distribution bias would also support a role for MBDs in the integration process. Together, these data show that retrotransposons can co-opt host-derived epigenome readers, potentially harnessing the host epigenome landscape to advantageously tune the retrotransposition process
