Maternal Country of Birth and Exclusive Breastfeeding During the First In-Hospital Day in Portugal: The Influence of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative
Background
Early breastfeeding practices are important determinants of later breastfeeding behaviors and can be influenced by multiple factors. Despite the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative reported positive influence on breastfeeding initiation, its influence on the association between maternal country of birth and first day in-hospital breastfeeding has not been examined.
Research aims
To determine (1) if association between maternal country of birth and first day in-hospital exclusive breastfeeding exists in Portugal and (2) if any association is affected by giving birth in a Baby-Friendly Hospital.
Methods
Data were drawn from baMBINO—a longitudinal, 2017–2019 nationwide study designed to assess the perinatal health and healthcare experiences of migrant and native Portuguese women. Data from participants (N = 5,340) were collected during their hospital stay from 32 maternity units. Missing data were handled through multiple imputation. After stratifying by Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative accreditation, a multivariate logistic regression was performed.
Results
First day in-hospital exclusive breastfeeding rates were high among both migrant and native participants (89.2% vs. 87.4%). Migrants were more likely to exclusively breastfeed when compared to natives (OR = 1.19, 95% CI [1.00, 1.41]). In non-Baby-Friendly Hospitals, a positive association was found between participants from Eastern European countries (aOR = 2.46, 95% CI [1.27, 4.78]) and first day in-hospital exclusive breastfeeding. In accredited hospitals, maternal country of birth did not influence exclusive breastfeeding during the first 24 hr.
Conclusions
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative attenuates differences between migrant and native participants, promoting optimal breastfeeding practices among natives. The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: This study is funded by FEDER funds through the Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalization, and by national funds of FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, under the scope of the project “Perinatal Health in Migrants: Barriers, Incentives and Outcomes” (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016874; PTDC/DTPSAP/6384/2014), the Unidade de Investigação em Epidemiologia - Instituto de Saúde Pública da Universidade do Porto (EPIUnit) (info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/FCT/6817 - DCRRNI ID/UIDB/04750/2020/PT), the PhD grant PD/BD/128082/2016 (CL) co-funded by the FCT and Human Potential Operating Program of the European Social Fund (POPH/FSE Program) and the contract DL57/2016/CP1336/CT0001 (CF)
1.65 micrometers (H-band) surface photometry of galaxies. III: observations of 558 galaxies with the TIRGO 1.5m telescope
We present near-infrared H-band (1.65 micron) surface photometry of 558
galaxies in the Coma Supercluster and in the Virgo cluster. This data set,
obtained with the Arcetri NICMOS3 camera ARNICA mounted on the Gornergrat
Infrared Telescope, is aimed at complementing, with observations of mostly
early-type objects, our NIR survey of spiral galaxies in these regions,
presented in previous papers of this series. Magnitudes at the optical radius,
total magnitudes, isophotal radii and light concentration indices are derived.
We confirm the existence of a positive correlation between the near-infrared
concentration index and the galaxy H-band luminosity. (Tables 1 and 2 are only

Combined analysis of KamLAND and Borexino neutrino signals from Th and U decays in the Earth's interior
The KamLAND and Borexino experiments have detected electron antineutrinos
produced in the decay chains of natural thorium and uranium (Th and U
geoneutrinos). We analyze the energy spectra of current geoneutrino data in
combination with solar and long-baseline reactor neutrino data, with
marginalized three-neutrino oscillation parameters. We consider the case with
unconstrained Th and U event rates in KamLAND and Borexino, as well as cases
with fewer degrees of freedom, as obtained by successively assuming for both
experiments a common Th/U ratio, a common scaling of Th+U event rates, and a
chondritic Th/U value. In combination, KamLAND and Borexino can reject the null
hypothesis (no geoneutrino signal) at 5 sigma. Interesting bounds or
indications emerge on the Th+U geoneutrino rates and on the Th/U ratio, in
broad agreement with typical Earth model expectations. Conversely, the results
disfavor the hypothesis of a georeactor in the Earth's core, if its power
exceeds a few TW. The interplay of KamLAND and Borexino geoneutrino data is
highlighted.Comment: 12 pages, including 6 figure
The TNG Near Infrared Camera Spectrometer
NICS (acronym for Near Infrared Camera Spectrometer) is the near-infrared
cooled camera-spectrometer that has been developed by the Arcetri Infrared
Group at the Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory, in collaboration with the
CAISMI-CNR for the TNG (the Italian National Telescope Galileo at La Palma,
Canary Islands, Spain).
As NICS is in its scientific commissioning phase, we report its observing
capabilities in the near-infrared bands at the TNG, along with the measured
performance and the limiting magnitudes. We also describe some technical
details of the project, such as cryogenics, mechanics, and the system which
executes data acquisition and control, along with the related software.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, compiled with A&A macros. A&A in pres
The Influence of Human-Milk Substitutes Marketing on Breastfeeding Intention and Practice among Native and Immigrant Brazilians
Background: The International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes is a global public health policy aiming to protect breastfeeding from the influence of human-milk substitutes marketing. Brazil is one of the few countries substantially implementing it. Most countries adopted selected provisions, including Portugal. Research Aim: To explore whether Brazilians’ perspectives about breastfeeding intention and practice are influenced by human-milk substitutes marketing upon migration to Portugal. Methods: A qualitative, prospective, cross-sectional survey design was conducted in Brazil and Portugal (2018–2019). Qualitative semi-structured interviews were performed with native (n = 16) and immigrant (n = 15) Brazilians. Women aged 18 or above, mothers of 0–12 month infants, and without contraindications to breastfeed, were eligible for the study. Heterogeneity sampling was employed based on socioeconomic status and infants’ age. Content analysis was conducted using NVivo. Results: Brazilian immigrants were more aware of the potential negative influence of human-milk substitutes marketing than natives. Sociocultural factors contributed to Brazilian immigrants being less permeable to the influence of human-milk substitutes marketing in the host country, where a less protective breastfeeding environment was perceived. Conclusions: Sociocultural factors including breastfeeding promotion strategies and a strong breastfeeding culture in the home country appear to play a protective role on breastfeeding intention and practice among Brazilians migrating to Portugal. © The Author(s) 2022.The authors disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: This study is funded by FEDER funds through the Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalization, and by national funding through the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT; Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education), under the scope of the project ‘‘Perinatal Health in Migrants: Barriers, Incentives and Outcomes’’ (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016874; PTDC/DTPSAP/6384/2014), the projects UIDB/04750/2020 e LA/P/0064/2020, the PhD grant PD/BD/128082/2016 (C. Northern JHK Standard Stars for Array Detectors
We report J, H and K photometry of 86 stars in 40 fields in the northern
hemisphere. The fields are smaller than or comparable to a 4x4 arcmin
field-of-view, and are roughly uniformly distributed over the sky, making them
suitable for a homogeneous broadband calibration network for near-infrared
panoramic detectors. K magnitudes range from 8.5 to 14, and J-K colors from
-0.1 to 1.2. The photometry is derived from a total of 3899 reduced images;
each star has been measured, on average, 26.0 times per filter on 5.5 nights.
Typical errors on the photometry are about 0.012.Comment: 10 pages including 3 figures, one separate figure on four pages. The

Dedalo: looking for clusters explanations in a labyrinth of Linked Data
We present Dedalo, a framework which is able to exploit Linked Data to generate explanations for clusters. In general, any result of a Knowledge Discovery process, including clusters, is interpreted by human experts who use their background knowledge to explain them. However, for someone without such expert knowledge, those results may be difficult to understand. Obtaining a complete and satisfactory explanation becomes a laborious and time-consuming process, involving expertise in possibly different domains. Having said so, not only does the Web of Data contain vast amounts of such background knowledge, but it also natively connects those domains. While the efforts put in the interpretation process can be reduced with the support of Linked Data, how to automatically access the right piece of knowledge in such a big space remains an issue. Dedalo is a framework that dynamically traverses Linked Data to find commonalities that form explanations for items of a cluster. We have developed different strategies (or heuristics) to guide this traversal, reducing the time to get the best explanation. In our experiments, we compare those strategies and demonstrate that Dedalo finds relevant and sophisticated Linked Data explanations from different areas
Which solar neutrino data favour the LMA solution?
Assuming neutrino oscillations, global analyses of solar data find that the
LOW solution is significantly disfavoured, leaving LMA as the best solution.
But the preference for LMA rests on three weak hints: the spectrum of earth
matter effects (Super-Kamiokande sees an overall day/night asymmetry only at 1
sigma), the Cl rate (but LMA and LOW predictions are both above the measured
value), the Ga rate (newer data decrease towards the LOW predictions both in
GNO and SAGE). Only new data will tell us if LMA is the true solution.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
