    Get PDF
The purpose was to evaluate the capacity of the future satellite SPOT to detect land use/cover in an urban milieu. A SPOT simulation over the Sherbrooke area was flown during the summer of 1982. After spectral and spatial resampling of the data, we obtained results which are comparable to SPOT characteristics. Remote sensing is thus both useful for land use/cover classification as well as updating data bases in urban milieu

La zone test est l'agglomération de Sherbrooke (Québec).Municipal administration requires the development of tools adapted to the management of urban information. In this context, remote sensing constitutes a new source of information useful in urban planning. The SPOT satellite, with a spatial resolution of 10 m in panchromatic mode and 20 m in multiband mode, meets the spatial specifications required in the context of urban planning studies. The objective of this research is to produce a spatial map by integrating cartographic information and SPOT data. The base of the document is a radiometrically and geometrically corrected satellite image to which geocoded data is integrated. The methodology used for the production of the spatial map is outlined. The relevance of such a document in the field of municipal management is discussed. The test site chosen for the study is the city of Sherbrooke (Québec)

Observer et évaluer la qualité des interactions enseignant.e/enfants à l'école maternelle en Belgique pour soutenir le développement langagier des enfants de 4 ans : une étude exploratoire

    Get PDF
Early childhood education is a privileged context for children to develop their language and communication abilities (Dickinson, 2011). More specifically, it is demonstrated that the quality of the interactions between teachers and children plays a protective role on language and communication development for more vulnerable children (Burchinal et al. 2010; Simard et al. 2013). The current study explores the quality of interactions in kindergarten in the French-speaking part of Belgium (second year for children of 4-5 years old). Observations took place in 17 classes, using the CLASS® Pre-K (Classroom Assessment Scoring System®, Pianta et al. 2008). Similar to other international investigations, our results show heterogeneity in the scores of the different classes. But overall, emotional support and classroom organization reach medium to high quality level, while instructional support shows a low average score. Some dimensions of the instructional support vary as a function of the teacher/children ratio and the type of activity. This exploratory study enables a reflection about language development support in early childhood education and raises questions about creative ways to optimize it

The Quebec newborn twin study at 21

This paper is a revised and updated edition of a previous description of the Quebec Newborn Twin Study (QNTS), an ongoing prospective longitudinal follow-up of a birth cohort of twins born between 1995 and 1998 in the greater Montreal area, Québec, Canada. The goal of QNTS is to document individual differences in the cognitive, behavioral, and social-emotional aspects of developmental health across childhood, their early genetic and environmental determinants, as well as their putative role in later social-emotional adjustment, school, health, and occupational outcomes. A total of 662 families of twins were initially assessed when the twins were aged 6 months. These twins and their family were then followed regularly. QNTS now has 16 waves of data collected or planned, including 5 in preschool. Over the last 24 years, a broad range of physiological, cognitive, behavioral, school, and health phenotypes were documented longitudinally through multi-informant and multimethod measurements. QNTS also entails extended and detailed multilevel assessments of proximal (e.g., parenting behaviors, peer relationships) and distal (e.g., family income) features of the child’s environment. QNTS children and a subset of their parents have been genotyped, allowing for the computation of a variety of polygenic scores. This detailed longitudinal information makes QNTS uniquely suited for the study of the role of the early years and gene–environment transactions in development

Patient Advisors: How to implement a process for involvement at all levels of governance in a healthcare organization

Patient involvement at the operational (clinical care and services), tactical (management), and strategic (board of directors and executive management) levels of establishments is increasingly sought after. To address this specific challenge, a Canadian healthcare organization, the Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux de la Mauricie-et-du-Centre-du-Québec, has developed an integrated strategy based on three principles: (1) shared leadership between a patient and a manager to build the strategy; (2) a clear process for recruiting, training, and coaching patient advisors (PA) so that they can participate in decision-making at the various levels of governance of the establishment; and (3) a feedback process for improving the strategy over time. This initiative gave rise to a pool of 30 patient advisors who reviewed documentation (39.07%), presented testimonies to establishment practitioners (13.73%), participated in process improvement activities (12.97%) and committees (8.93%), and helped train students in health sciences (11.61%). It also led to the development of a request form for all persons wishing to involve PAs in their projects. This PA involvement, highly appreciated by both managers (94%) and PAs (81%), brought back the fundamental meaning of the patient–practitioner relationship and helped incorporate patients’ experiential knowledge into the care and service improvement process. This strategy can serve as a model for other organizations wishing to structure optimal patient engagement at the different levels of governance of their organization

Humoral responses to the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine are impaired in Leigh Syndrome French Canadian patients

    Get PDF
Leigh Syndrome French Canadian (LSFC) is a rare autosomal recessive metabolic disorder characterized by severe lactic acidosis crises and early mortality. LSFC patients carry mutations in the Leucine Rich Pentatricopeptide Repeat Containing (LRPPRC) gene, which lead to defects in the respiratory chain complexes and mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondrial respiration modulates cellular metabolic activity, which impacts many cell types including the differentiation and function of immune cells. Hence, we postulated that, in addition to neurological and metabolic disorders, LSFC patients may show impaired immune activity. To gain insight into the quality of the immune response in LSFC patients, we examined the response to the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine by measuring antibody titers to MMR in the plasma. In a cohort of eight LSFC patients, the response to the MMR vaccine was variable, with some individuals showing antibodies to all three viruses, while others had antibodies to two or fewer viruses. These results suggest that the mutations in the LRPPRC gene present in LSFC patients may affect the immune response to vaccines. Monitoring vaccine response in this fragile population should be considered to ensure full protection against pathogens
