    The New Woman: An Age of Revolution Through the Eyes of Twentieth Century Chinese Women Writers

    During an age of revolution, Chinese women writers began to emerge. While the country was going through an internal struggle for modernity and cultural rebirth, women fought their own battle to make their voices heard from within the literary field. This thesis investigates various stories by Chinese women writers published between the years of the May Fourth Movement and well into the Cultural Revolution. This investigation endeavors to illustrate the changing “New Woman” ideology, originally coined at the beginning of the May Fourth Movement, as well as analyze the various themes in women’s work such as love, marriage, family, social structures, and social behaviors. This thesis will ponder upon the subversive aspects of women’s writing that make it distinctly different from their male counterparts that has left a lasting impression on Chinese writers today. As a result, this thesis will also serve as a lens through which the reader can view the age of revolution in early 20th century China

    Given the current trends in education and the passing of No Child Left Behind Act in 2001 (U.S. Department of Education), literacy education has become increasingly important. Many studies have been done that indicate that students who do not learn how to read in the early years of their education may experience failure during the later years (Martson, Deno, Dongil, Diment, & Rogers, 1995). The National Reading Panel’s (NRP, 2000) findings suggest that becoming a good reader in elementary school is more likely to produce a more effective learner and a better reader as students move through school and into adult life. This information is important to those individuals who are working with children as they first start school and especially to those individuals who are working with children in early intervention services

    Mission-Centric Learning: Developing Students’ Workplace Readiness Skills

    We discuss and evaluate the implementation of a mission-centric course project that is strategically tied to learning outcomes important to colleges of business. Specifically, to support our college’s mission, undergraduate students enrolled in a training and development class were tasked with applying course concepts to assess the need for, to design, and to deliver (to other business students) workplace readiness training. To aid other management educators interested in adopting similar strategically aligned and feedback-rich learning experiences, we outline and discuss relevant project planning, design, and facilitation issues, as well as present a summary of initial results derived from this project

    From strings to coils: Rotational dynamics of DNA-linked colloidal chains

    We investigate the dynamical behavior of deformable filaments experimentally using a tunable model system consisting of linked paramagnetic colloidal particles, where the persistence length lp, the contour length lc, and the strength and frequency of the external driving force are controlled. We find that upon forcing by an external magnetic field, a variety of structural and conformational regimes exist. Depending on the competition of forces and torques on the chain, we see classic rigid rotator behavior, as well as dynamically rich wagging, coiling, and folding behavior. Through a combination of experiments, computational models, and theoretical calculations, we are able to observe, classify, and predict these dynamics as a function of the dimensionless Mason and magnetoelastic numbers
