    Seasonal variation in vitamin D status of beef cattle reared in the central United States

    The objective was to retrospectively measure seasonal sunlight-associated variation in serum concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) in beef cattle. The concentration of 25OHD was measured in crossbred animals born from March to May in 2011 and 2012. Vitamin D status 2 to 3 mo after birth (period 1) was only available for 2012 calves and was measured in June 2012. Period 1 animals had serum 25OHD concentrations of 26.3 +- 1.5 ng/mL. The 25OHD concentrations for late summer (period 2) were 46.6 +- 1.4 and 51.0 +- 1.5 ng/mL for 2011 and 2012, respectively. Serum concentration of 25OHD in early fall (period 3) were 63.8 +- 1.4 and 55.2 +- 1.5 ng/mL for calves in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Values observed for both late summer and early fall indicated vitamin D sufficiency (P \u3c 0.001) compared with period 1. With diminishing exposure to ultraviolet B and consuming w800 IU or 1800 IU (2011 and 2012, respectively) of supplemental vitamin D, the calves’ midwinter (period 4) 25OHD concentrations fell to 15.2 +- 1.6 and 16.7 +- 1.5 ng/mL for 2011 and 2012, respectively, after 4 to 5 mo on a finishing diet (P \u3c 0.0001). This is considered vitamin D insufficiency in most species. Results indicate that calves are marginally sufficient to insufficient for vitamin D based on serum 25OHD concentrations soon after birth and during winter. Some individual animals would be classified vitamin D deficient. In the absence of sufficient UVB exposure, the dietary vitamin D requirements for rapidly growing beef cattle may need to be increased

    Photographic detection of Cadmium(II) and Zinc(II) ions

    The binding properties of two 2,8-dithia-5-aza-2,6-pyridinophane-based ligands, bearing respectively coumarin (HNCum) and naphthol-benzoxaazole (HNBO) optically active units as pendant arms, were studied with the aim of transition metal cations selective detection. The novel all-solid-state optodes were obtained by inclusion of fluorophores inside PVC-based polymeric films. The influence of lipophilic sites incorporation and plasticizer nature on pyridinophane-based optodes response was investigated. An enhanced selectivity of the ligands towards Cadmium(II) and Zinc(II) ions was detected. Light Emitting Diode, LED 380 nm, was used as light source, and a digital camera as a signal detector. The results obtained demonstrated the suitability of the developed optodes to perform fast and low cost simultaneous monitoring of Zn2+and Cd2+ ions by means of familiar devices and chemometrics. © 2016 The Authors. Distance learning has become one of the most discussed topics in educational institutions during the spread of Covid-19, revealing a discrepancy between the rapid development of technology and the ability of learning environments to adapt to this turn. In view of this ongoing debate, Digital WHOmanities tried to define the complex and multifaceted figure of the digital humanist and to provide a methodological framework that could foster further online academic initiatives. Specifically, the accurate organization of timing and contents and the adoption of synchronous and asynchronous approaches have highlighted the effectiveness of flexible digital didactics

    Potentiometric Sensing of Nonsteroidal Painkillers by Acyclic Squaramide Ionophores

    We report here a small library of a new type of acyclic squaramide receptors (L1-L5) as selective ionophores for the detection of ketoprofen and naproxen anions (KF- and NS-, respectively) in aqueous media. 1H NMR binding studies show a high affinity of these squaramide receptors toward KF- and NS-, suggesting the formation of H-bonds between the two guests and the receptors through indole and −NH groups. Compounds L1-L5 have been tested as ionophores for the detection of KF- and NS- inside solvent PVC-based polymeric membranes. The optimal membrane compositions were established through the careful variation of the ligand/tridodecylmethylammonium chloride (TDMACl) anion-exchanger ratio. All of the tested acyclic squaramide receptors L1-L5 have high affinity toward KF- and NS- and anti-Hofmeister selectivity, with L4 and L5 showing the highest sensitivity and selectivity to NS-. The utility of the developed sensors for a high precision detection of KF- in pharmaceutical compositions with low relative errors of analysis (RSD, 0.99-1.4%) and recoveries, R%, in the range 95.1-111.8% has been demonstrated. Additionally, the chemometric approach has been involved to effectively discriminate between the structurally very similar KF- and NS-, and the possibility of detecting these analytes at concentrations as low as 0.07 μM with R2 of 0.947 and at 0.15 μM with R2 of 0.919 for NS- and KF-, respectively, was shown

    Background: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis consists of the presence of abrasions or ulcerations located on mucosae (oral or genital). Objectives: The aim of this article is to review the current literature providing the main causes related to recurrent aphthous stomatitis and insights into treatment and management of this clinical condition Methods: Articles matching terms that correlated with "recurrent aphthous stomatitis"were searched on PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library and selected according to their pertinence. Results: Several forms of aphthous stomatitis have been described, based on the extent (minor, major), morphology (herpetiform) and associations to other signs (Beh\ue7et syndrome or more complex inflammatory syndromes). Topical as well as systemic treatments have been described to obtain a faster remission of the aphthosis or to reduce associated symptoms such as pain. Conclusions: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis can have a mild-to-severe clinical appearance, being mainly localized on the oral mucosa or at the level of the genital area. Different strategies have been described so far for its management and treatment

    Coordination Chemistry and Sensing Properties Towards Anions and Metal Ions of a Simple Fluorescent Urea

    The coordination and sensing properties towards anions and transition metal ions of the simple novel fluorescent urea 1-(2-aminophenyl)-3-(naphthalen-1)-yl)urea (L) were investigated in solution, and in the solid state. An electron donating amine group in the molecular skeleton of L decreased the acidity of the urea NHs that are usually deprotonated by basic anions and allowed for a good degree of affinity towards fluoride in DMSO-d6-0.5 %H2O. Moreover, the amine moiety acted as a further binding group for metal ions. Indeed, L was able to bind Zn2+ both in solution and in the solid state, and to respond to the presence of this metal ion in MeCN with an enhancement of the fluorescence emission. Although solution studies evidenced the formation of a 1 : 1 complex of L with Zn2+, complexes with a 2 : 1 ligand-to-metal stoichiometry were isolated in the solid state. DFT calculations helped to clarify the stability reasons behind these results

    Noise Can Reduce Disorder in Chaotic Dynamics

    We evoke the idea of representation of the chaotic attractor by the set of unstable periodic orbits and disclose a novel noise-induced ordering phenomenon. For long unstable periodic orbits forming the strange attractor the weights (or natural measure) is generally highly inhomogeneous over the set, either diminishing or enhancing the contribution of these orbits into system dynamics. We show analytically and numerically a weak noise to reduce this inhomogeneity and, additionally to obvious perturbing impact, make a regularizing influence on the chaotic dynamics. This universal effect is rooted into the nature of deterministic chaos.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
