Topological tunneling with Dynamical overlap fermions
Tunneling between different topological sectors with dynamical chiral
fermions is difficult because of a poor mass scaling of the pseudo-fermion
estimate of the determinant. For small fermion masses it is virtually
impossible using standard methods. However, by projecting out the small Wilson
eigenvectors from the overlap operator, and treating the correction determinant
exactly, we can significantly increase the rate of topological sector tunneling
and reduce substantially the auto-correlation time. We present and compare a
number of different approaches, and advocate a method which allows topological
tunneling even at low mass with little addition to the computational cost.Comment: 17 pages; v2 as accepted in computer Physics Communication
Many Masses on One Stroke: Economic Computation of Quark Propagators
The computational effort in the calculation of Wilson fermion quark
propagators in Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics can be considerably reduced by
exploiting the Wilson fermion matrix structure in inversion algorithms based on
the non-symmetric Lanczos process. We consider two such methods: QMR (quasi
minimal residual) and BCG (biconjugate gradients). Based on the decomposition
of the Wilson mass matrix, using QMR, one can carry
out inversions on a {\em whole} trajectory of masses simultaneously, merely at
the computational expense of a single propagator computation. In other words,
one has to compute the propagator corresponding to the lightest mass only,
while all the heavier masses are given for free, at the price of extra storage.
Moreover, the symmetry can be used to cut
the computational effort in QMR and BCG by a factor of two. We show that both
methods then become---in the critical regime of small quark
masses---competitive to BiCGStab and significantly better than the standard MR
method, with optimal relaxation factor, and CG as applied to the normal
equations.Comment: 17 pages, uuencoded compressed postscrip
Topology of dynamical lattice configurations including results from dynamical overlap fermions
We investigate how the topological charge density in lattice QCD simulations
is affected by violations of chiral symmetry in different fermion actions. To
this end we compare lattice configurations generated with a number of different
actions including first configurations generated with exact overlap quarks. We
visualize the topological profiles after mild smearing. In the topological
charge correlator we measure the size of the positive core, which is known to
vanish in the continuum limit. To leading order we find the core size to scale
linearly with the lattice spacing with the same coefficient for all actions,
even including quenched simulations. In the subleading term the different
actions vary over a range of about 10 %. Our findings suggest that non-chiral
lattice actions at current lattice spacings do not differ much for this
specific observable related to topology, both among themselves and compared to
overlap fermions.Comment: 7 pages, talk presented at The XXIX International Symposium on

The Problem(s) of Constituting the Demos:A (Set of) Solution(s)
When collective decisions should be made democratically, which people form the relevant demos? Many theorists think this question is an embarrassment to democratic theory: (1) because any decision about who forms the demos must be made democratically by the right demos, which itself must be democratically constituted and so on ad infinitum; and (2) because neither the concept of democracy, nor (3) our reasons for caring about democracy, determine who should form the demos. Having distinguished between these three versions of the demos problem, we argue that each of them can be solved

Numerical Methods for the QCD Overlap Operator:III. Nested Iterations
The numerical and computational aspects of chiral fermions in lattice quantum
chromodynamics are extremely demanding. In the overlap framework, the
computation of the fermion propagator leads to a nested iteration where the
matrix vector multiplications in each step of an outer iteration have to be
accomplished by an inner iteration; the latter approximates the product of the
sign function of the hermitian Wilson fermion matrix with a vector. In this
paper we investigate aspects of this nested paradigm. We examine several Krylov
subspace methods to be used as an outer iteration for both propagator
computations and the Hybrid Monte-Carlo scheme. We establish criteria on the
accuracy of the inner iteration which allow to preserve an a priori given
precision for the overall computation. It will turn out that the accuracy of
the sign function can be relaxed as the outer iteration proceeds. Furthermore,
we consider preconditioning strategies, where the preconditioner is built upon
an inaccurate approximation to the sign function. Relaxation combined with
preconditioning allows for considerable savings in computational efforts up to
a factor of 4 as our numerical experiments illustrate. We also discuss the
possibility of projecting the squared overlap operator into one chiral sector.Comment: 33 Pages; citations adde
Late Bronze Age helmets with crests on transalpine long-distance trade routes
The fragment of a bronze helmet with a crest was recently discovered at the northern foot of the main eastern alpine chain in southern Salzburg (Austria) at approximately 1200 metres above sea level. It was found in a sandbank of the Anlaufbach, which flows into the Nassfelder Ache and the Gasteiner Ache in the North. The latter is a tributary to the Salzach, the largest river of the Salzburg region, which flows through both the mountains and the lowlands. The object was found in a water context and may have been a votive deposit.
Laser induced forward transfer of SnO2 for sensing applications using different precursors systems
This paper presents the transfer of SnO2 by laser induced forward transfer (LIFT) for gas sensor applications. Different donor substrates of SnO2 with and without triazene polymer (TP) as a dynamic release layer were prepared. Transferring these films under different conditions were evaluated by optical microscopy and functionality. Transfers of sputtered SnO2 films do not lead to satisfactory results and transfers of SnO2 nanoparticles are difficult. Transfers of SnO2 nanoparticles can only be achieved when applying a second laser pulse to the already transferred material, which improves the adhesion resulting in a complete pixel. A new approach of decomposing the transfer material during LIFT transfer was developed. Donor films based on UV absorbing metal complex precursors namely, SnCl2(acac)2 were prepared and transferred using the LIFT technique. Transfer conditions were optimized for the different systems, which were deposited onto sensor-like microstructures. The conductivity of the transferred material at temperatures of about 400âC are in a range usable for SnO2 gas sensors. First sensing tests were carried out and the transferred material proved to change conductivity when exposed to ethanol, acetone, and methan
