In the course of developing the Pedagogical Readings as an educational-historical source for GDR research, 23 interviews with contemporary witnesses were conducted, which were used, among other things, to reconstruct the steps in the development of the format (Koch & Koebe, 2021). In terms of content, this text follows on from the above-mentioned article by Koch and Koebe (2021) and examines the implementation and design of the process of creating the pedagogical readings. In contrast, however, the following article adopts a contemporary internal perspective that emerges from the analysis of pedagogical readings that focused on the optimization of the continuing education format itself. Thus, the development process of the pedagogical readings will be reconstructed as it emerged for the protagonists, so to speak, from the perspective of the continuing educators. From the perspective of the trainers, statements about the subsequent utilization of the pedagogical readings can be generated

The GDR further education system knew manifold formats of collegial exchange of experience. The pedagogical readings (“Pädagogischen Lesungen”) represented a form that was characterized by specific features. The article provided here intends to contribute to a systematic description and presentation of conceptual elements of the further education system. On this basis, the pedagogical readings are located within this system and their characteristics are elaborated

    A real-time non-linear vehicle preview model

Vehicle accident statistics indicate that fatalities due to rollover of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) are of international concern. Soft suspension, combined with high centre-of-gravity, increase SUV rollover propensity. Control strategies for prevention or mitigation of rollover, based on the current state of the vehicle, exist but most experience a delay in switching, due to response times of the controllers and actuators used to control vehicles dynamics. This paper proposes a real-time non-linear vehicle preview model (VPM) capable of accurately predicting future vehicle states based on current states. The preview model is developed and experimentally validated on a SUV. Results indicate that important vehicle states, including roll angle and lateral acceleration, can be accurately predicted up to more than 0.25 s into the future. Vehicle dynamics controllers can use the previewed states instead of the measured states to eliminate delays and make the strategies proactive instead of reactive.https://www.inderscienceonline.com/loi/ijhvs?expanded=252019-03-01hj2018Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineerin

Study protocol: a pragmatic randomised controlled trial of a 12-week physical activity and nutritional education program for overweight Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women

Abstract

Background

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have a higher prevalence and incidence of obesity and type 2 diabetes than non-Indigenous Australian women. Physical inactivity is a key modifiable risk factor for obesity and evidence shows that even modest reductions in waist circumference (WC) have significant health benefits. Trialing physical activity programs in difficult-to-reach high risk groups, especially urban Indigenous Australians poses distinct implementation challenges.

Methods/Design

The trial objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured 12-week physical activity group program with nutritional advice. The design is a pragmatic randomised controlled trial. This study protocol describes the implementation and evaluation of the program. Participants are randomised into either an intervention or waitlisted group. The waitlisted group have a 12 month waiting period before commencing the 12-week program. Participant data is collected at baseline, 12, 24 and 52 weeks. Participants are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, aged 18-64 years with a waist circumference greater than 80 centimetres residing in Adelaide. The primary outcome measure is WC change immediately post program from baseline. Secondary outcomes include short term and long term changes in WC, weight, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, insulin, insulin resistance (calculated HOMA), haemoglobin A1C (HbA1C), triglycerides and C-reactive protein (CRP). Behavioural and psychosocial surveys are administered to assess physical activity, dietary intake and the participant's motivation, self-efficacy and perceived social support for physical activity. Qualitative interviews focusing on participants' motivation, enablers and barriers to healthy eating and physical activity will be undertaken. Implementation fidelity and participation are also assessed.

Discussion

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women's Fitness Program (WFP) is designed to provide a rigorous physiological and client-based evaluation of a structured 12-week program aimed to increase metabolic fitness and reduce WC in this high risk population. Evaluation results aim to provide the support necessary to design programs that are accessible, affordable and effective at reducing WC, while also improving the metabolic profile of overweight Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.

Trial registration

Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry ACTRN12610000224022</p

    Real-time Non-linear Vehicle Preview Model

Sport Utility Vehicles are designed to be used on both smooth roads and rough off-road terrains. These vastly different operating conditions require vehicle and suspension parameters that lie at opposite ends of the design space. Harder suspension is required for adequate handling on smooth roads and softer suspension, combined with large ground clearance, allows for improved ride comfort and off-road capability. This causes a compromise in the suspension setup. As a result of the typically softer suspension, as well higher centre of gravity, compared to passenger vehicles, SUVs are more prone to rollover. This motivates researchers to find methods of improving the handling of Sport Utility Vehicles, which in turn would decrease the number of rollover accidents involving these vehicles. The proposed methods include, amongst others, the use of active anti-roll bars, slow-active, semi-active and active suspension. The control strategies of most of these methods are based on the current vehicle state, giving them the same downfall, which is a delay in switching. To eliminate this delay, some type of preview is required. A non-linear vehicle preview model that solves in real-time was developed and implemented on the Land Rover Defender 110. The vehicle preview model is capable of predicting vehicle states up to (limited by the current processor) with good accuracy. The predicted states can then be used as an input to a control system or the model can be used as a state estimator. Even though there are numerous possible applications of the vehicle preview model, it was only implemented in one existing suspension control system, known as the Running Root Mean Square strategy. This strategy compares the measured lateral and vertical accelerations of the vehicle to decide on the suitable suspension setting. This strategy has a delay of about ms. When the predicted lateral acceleration was used as an input to the existing suspension control strategy, the delay in switching was reduced and improvements in vehicle handling of up to was achieved over a variety of tests.Dissertation (MEng)--University of Pretoria, 2015.tm2015Mechanical and Aeronautical EngineeringMEngUnrestricte
