    The Interplay between Hormones and Irritable Bowel Disease

    Thesis (M.A.)--Boston UniversityThis thesis examines the underlying mechanisms causing the severe and often debilitating symptoms associated with both Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. These disorders are characterized by, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation and diarrhea, and the symptoms are often intermittent. The variable onset and offset of symptoms suggests that periodic fluctuations in body state or signaling may play a role in the etiology and presentation of symptoms. This thesis proposes that the actions of the main intestinal hormones and their interactions with other hormones such as estrogen and progesterone may explain the oscillatory nature of the symptomatology. Spikes in the hormone progesterone may induce IBS-like symptoms such as cramping and constipation thereby representing a potential mediator of IBS symptoms. Evaluating the hormone progesterone’s role in IBS and IBD may create a new target for therapeutic treatments. Moreover, hormonal-based therapy represents a potential means to treat the cause, rather than just the symptoms of IBS and IBD

    The expressive stance: intentionality, expression, and machine art

    This paper proposes a new interpretive stance for interpreting artistic works and performances that is relevant to artificial intelligence research but also has broader implications. Termed the expressive stance, this stance makes intelligible a critical distinction between present-day machine art and human art, but allows for the possibility that future machine art could find a place alongside our own. The expressive stance is elaborated as a response to Daniel Dennett's notion of the intentional stance, which is critically examined with respect to his specialized concept of rationality. The paper also shows that temporal scale implicitly serves to select between different modes of explanation in prominent theories of intentionality.     A Subsumption Agent for Collaborative Free Improvisation

    This paper discusses the design and evaluation of an artificial agent for collaborative musical free improvisation. The agent provides a means to investigate the underpinnings of improvisational interaction. In connection with this general goal, the system is also used here to explore the implementation of a collaborative musical agent using a specific robotics architecture, Subsumption. The architecture of the system is explained, and its evaluation in an empirical study with expert improvisors is discussed. A follow-up study using a second iteration of the system is also presented. The system design and connected studies bring together Subsumption robotics, ecological psychology, and musical improvisation, and contribute to an empirical grounding of an ecological theory of improvisation

    Synovial hemangioma of the knee joint in a 12-year-old boy: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Synovial hemangioma is a rare condition and is frequently misdiagnosed, leading to a diagnostic delay of many years.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We present a case of an atypical synovial hemangioma in a 12-year-old Caucasian boy with a diagnostic delay of 3 years.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>It is important to know that synovial hemangioma mostly affects the knee joint, showing recurrent bloody effusions without a history of trauma. If there are no intermittent effusions, the diagnosis will be even more difficult. In cases of nonspecific symptoms and longstanding knee pain the diagnosis of a synovial hemangioma should also be considered in order to avoid diagnostic delay. Magnetic resonance imaging is the main diagnostic tool to evaluate patients with synovial hemangioma, showing characteristic lace-like or linear patterns.</p> <p>Angiography can identify feeder vessels and offers the possibility of embolisation in the same setting. Surgical excision, either done per arthroscopy or per arthrotomy, is recommended as soon as possible to avoid the risk of damage to the cartilage.</p

    Processes and experiences of creative cognition in seven Western classical composers

    In a qualitative study, we explored the range of reflections and experiences involved in the composition of score-based music by administering a 15-item, open-ended, questionnaire to seven professional composers from Europe and North America. Adopting a grounded theory approach, we organized six different codes emerging from our data into two higher-order categories ( the act of composing and establishing relationships). Our content analysis, inspired by the theoretical resources of 4E cognitive science, points to three overlapping characteristics of creative cognition in music composition: it is largely exploratory, it is grounded in bodily experience, and it emerges from the recursive dialogue of agents and their environment. More generally, such preliminary findings suggest that musical creativity may be advantageously understood as a process of constant adaptation – one in which composers enact their musical styles and identities by exploring novel interactivities hidden in their contingent and historical milieux
