Linear and angular momentum of electromagnetic fields generated by an arbitrary distribution of charge and current densities at rest
Starting from Stratton-Panofsky-Phillips-Jefimenko equations for the electric
and magnetic fields generated by completely arbitrary charge and current
density distributions at rest, we derive far-zone approximations for the
fields, containing all components, dominant as well as sub-dominant. Using
these approximate formulas, we derive general formulas for the total
electromagnetic linear momentum and angular momentum, valid at large distances

The contribution of grass and clover root turnover to N leaching
Sources of inorganic and organic N leaching from grass-clover mixtures at field sites in Denmark, Germany and Iceland were investigated. Grass or clover was labelled with 15N-urea four times (autumn 2007, spring, summer and autumn 2008) prior to the leaching season in autumn and winter 2008. Soil water was sampled at 30 cm depth and analyzed for 15N-enrichment of dissolved inorganic N (DIN) and dissolved organic N (DON). Most 15N was recovered in DON for both labelled grass and clover at all sites. At the Danish site, grass and clover contributed more to the DON pool than the DIN whereas the opposite was observed at the German and Icelandic sites. The results show that both clover and grass contribute directly to N leaching from the root zone in mixtures, and that clover contribution is higher than grass. Furthermore, the present study indicates that roots active in the growth season prior to the drainage period contribute more to N leaching than roots active in the growth season the previous year, which is consistent with estimates of root longevity at the three sites
The uniting of Europe and the foundation of EU studies: revisiting the neofunctionalism of Ernst B. Haas
This article suggests that the neofunctionalist theoretical legacy left by Ernst B. Haas is somewhat richer and more prescient than many contemporary discussants allow. The article develops an argument for routine and detailed re-reading of the corpus of neofunctionalist work (and that of Haas in particular), not only to disabuse contemporary students and scholars of the normally static and stylized reading that discussion of the theory provokes, but also to suggest that the conceptual repertoire of neofunctionalism is able to speak directly to current EU studies and comparative regionalism. Neofunctionalism is situated in its social scientific context before the theory's supposed erroneous reliance on the concept of 'spillover' is discussed critically. A case is then made for viewing Haas's neofunctionalism as a dynamic theory that not only corresponded to established social scientific norms, but did so in ways that were consistent with disciplinary openness and pluralism
Home range and habitat use by Kemp's Ridley turtles in West-Central Florida
The Kemp's ridley turtle (Lepidochelys kempii) is an endangered species whose recovery depends in part on
the identification and protection of required habitats. We used radio and sonic telemetry on subadult Kemp's ridley
turtles to investigate home-range size and habitat use in the coastal waters of west-central Florida from 1994 to
1996. We tracked 9 turtles during May-August up to 70 days after release and fou.ld they occupied 5-30 km2 foraging
ranges. Compositional analyses indicated that turtles used rock outcroppings in their foraging ranges at a
significantly higher proportion than expected. based on availability within the study area. Additionally. turtles used
live bottom (e.g .âą sessile invertebrates) and green macroalgae habitats significantly more than seagrass habitat. Similar
studies are needed through'mt the Kemp's ridley turtles' range to investigate regional and stage-specific differences
in habitat use. which can then be used to conserve important foraging areas
One step multiderivative methods for first order ordinary differential equations
A family of one-step multiderivative methods based on Padé approximants to the exponential function is developed.
The methods are extrapolated and analysed for use in PECE mode.
Error constants and stability intervals are calculated and the combinations compared with well known linear multi-step combinations and combinations using high accuracy Newton-Cotes quadrature formulas as correctors.

Inelastic scattering of light by a cold trapped atom: Effects of the quantum center-of-mass motion
The light scattered by a cold trapped ion, which is in the stationary state
of laser cooling, presents features due to the mechanical effects of
atom-photon interaction. These features appear as additional peaks (sidebands)
in the spectrum of resonance fluorescence. Among these sidebands the literature
has discussed the Stokes and anti-Stokes components, namely the sidebands of
the elastic peak. In this manuscript we show that the motion also gives rise to
sidebands of the inelastic peaks. These are not always visible, but, as we
show, can be measured in parameter regimes which are experimentally accessible.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Experimental Identification of the Kink Instability as a Poloidal Flux Amplification Mechanism for Coaxial Gun Spheromak Formation
The magnetohydrodynamic kink instability is observed and identified
experimentally as a poloidal flux amplification mechanism for coaxial gun
spheromak formation. Plasmas in this experiment fall into three distinct
regimes which depend on the peak gun current to magnetic flux ratio, with (I)
low values resulting in a straight plasma column with helical magnetic field,
(II) intermediate values leading to kinking of the column axis, and (III) high
values leading immediately to a detached plasma. Onset of column kinking agrees
quantitatively with the Kruskal-Shafranov limit, and the kink acts as a dynamo
which converts toroidal to poloidal flux. Regime II clearly leads to both
poloidal flux amplification and the development of a spheromak configuration.Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter
Protein folding rates correlate with heterogeneity of folding mechanism
By observing trends in the folding kinetics of experimental 2-state proteins
at their transition midpoints, and by observing trends in the barrier heights
of numerous simulations of coarse grained, C-alpha model, Go proteins, we show
that folding rates correlate with the degree of heterogeneity in the formation
of native contacts. Statistically significant correlations are observed between
folding rates and measures of heterogeneity inherent in the native topology, as
well as between rates and the variance in the distribution of either

The 85-electrode AO system of the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope
We discuss the chosen concepts, detailed design, implementation and
calibration of the 85-electrode adaptive optics (AO) system of the Swedish
1-meter Solar Telescope (SST), which was installed in 2013. The AO system is
unusual by using a combination of a monomorph mirror with a Shack-Hartmann (SH)
wavefront sensor (WFS), and by using a second high-resolution SH microlens
array to aid the DM characterization, calibration, and modal control. An Intel
PC workstation performs the heavy image processing associated with cross
correlations and real-time control at 2 kHz update rate with very low latency.
The computer and software continue the successful implementation since 1995 of
earlier generations of correlation tracker and AO systems at SST and its
predecessor SVST by relying entirely on work station technology and an
extremely efficient algorithm for implementing cross correlations with the
large field-of-view of the WFS. We describe critical aspects of the design,
calibrations, software and functioning of the AO system. The exceptionally high
performance is testified through the highest Strehl ratio (inferred from the
measured granulation contrast) of existing meter-class solar telescopes, as
demonstrated here at wavelengths shorter than 400 nm and discussed in more
detail in a separate publication by Scharmer et al. We expect that some aspects
