Lygaeus kalmii Stal (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae) is an insect found throughout the eastern United States and Canada. There is extensive taxonomic literature on this insect (Stil, 1874; Townsend, 1887; Parshey, 1919, 1923; Slater and Knopf, 1969), but very little attention has been given to the rest of its biology. This study describes the habits of kalmii populations in southern Michigan

Predictors of Student Outcomes in Developmental Math at a Public Community and Technical College

With the wide range of abilities of community college students, proper course placement is crucial. Therefore, having better predictors of success can help improve placement of students for their achievement. This study analyzed student predictors, instructor predictors, and classroom predictors in relation to student final exam score and student final grade in Elementary Algebra and Intermediate Algebra classes. Student predictors included gender, ACT math score, SAT math score, community college enrollment, math pretest score, and ASC grade. Instructor predictors included gender, employment status, Mozart music use, and ALEKS software use. Classroom predictors included time of day, number of class meetings per week, and class size. The Elementary Algebra and Intermediate Algebra data sets were analyzed with simple and stepwise multiple regression as well as simple and stepwise binary logistic regression. The study of specific predictors that impact student achievement in developmental mathematics revealed the following. When analyzed individually, Elementary and Intermediate Algebra shared ACT Math score, community college enrollment, and math pretest score as predictors of final exam score. When analyzed individually, Elementary and Intermediate Algebra shared ACT Math score, math pretest score, and ASC grade as predictors of final grade. When analyzed in combinations, Elementary and Intermediate Algebra shared ACT Math score and math pretest score as common predictors of final exam score. When analyzed in combinations, Elementary and Intermediate Algebra shared math pretest score and ASC grade as common predictors of final grade

Assessing the impact of the New Student Support Arrangements (NSSA) on higher education institutions (BIS research paper no.12)

"The research explores the impact on the policies, planning and behaviours of universities nearly four years after the introduction of new arrangements for student support in higher education (known as NSSA). It is set within the context of continued policy focus on increasing and widening participation, rising importance of university performance indicators in student choices, and a challenging economic climate. The research uses qualitative evidence collected from over 120 staff in 15 case studies across England..." - exec. summary

Teaching a Person with Memory Impairment Smartphone Use for Emergencies during Outdoors Walking Case Report

    Get PDF
Safety issues arise during the performance of activities as dementia advances. Occupational therapists collaborate with dementia clients and their caregivers to find solutions and strategies to prolong safe activity participation. Additionally, occupational therapists teach through demonstration showing engagement in specific activities may no longer be safe. We present the case of a 70-year-old male with mild dementia. His caregiver believes he needs to use a smartphone for safety during outdoors walking; the client’s enjoyed and valued occupation. This case report illustrates smartphone use may be difficult to learn for a person with mild dementia. It highlights the need for the caregiver and person with dementia to receive education together for best understanding. New technologies for community mobility such as outdoors walking are considered

Continuity of Care from Hospital to Home

Students were given the opportunity to interact with the case of an 87 year-old Chinese-American woman in three stages, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary communication and continuity of care throughout the case. Students addressed the woman\u27s initial admission to the hospital for surgery, her transfer to a skilled nursing facility, and her return home with the help of rehabilitation and an interdisciplinary support team

Paper 1: Analysis of Achievement for Understanding Geometry

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a mathematics professional development course. More specifically, in this study we examine whether geometric experiences have an impact on level of performance in mathematics. The van Hiele (Fuys, D., Geddes, D., & Tischler, R., 1988) model of geometric understanding provided a research framework from which to view geometric understanding. This model suggests five levels of understanding that should be taken into consideration when examining levels of geometric thinking: Visual, Descriptive/Analytic, Abstract/Relational, Formal Deduction/Proof, and Rigor. The sample under study was three cohorts of practicing elementary teachers and mathematics coaches engaged in a 50-hour P-5 Mathematics Endorsement course entitled Understanding Geometry. Data collected through pre- and post-tests provided evidence that participants made significant improvement in geometric content knowledge and levels of understanding, thus verifying the effectiveness of their professional development experience. Also, this study points toward the importance of participants’ entering level of understanding for achieving the course objectives

Prognostic indicators in patients presenting with the nephrotic syndrome

Prognostic indicators in patients presenting with the nephrotic syndrome. Clinical data from 246 patients presenting with a nephrotic syndrome and biopsy-proven glomerular disorder were analyzed, using statistical survival techniques, to determine which of several variables (sex, age, plasma creatinine, diastolic blood pressure and 24-hour urinary protein loss) were associated with subsequent end-stage renal failure. The best prediction of outcome could be made at one year (N = 121); then plasma creatinine (P < 0.001) and heavy proteinuria (P = 0.049) were the best determinants. For a given plasma creatinine level, heavy urinary protein was associated with a worse outcome. The incidence of end-stage renal failure was greatest three to four years from the date edema first developed. Plasma creatinine and urinary protein values, collected four-monthly throughout the study period, were analyzed as time-dependent covariates. A relationship was found between the prevailing risk of renal failure and earlier heavy proteinuria (P < 0.001). Spontaneous complete remission of proteinuria was associated with a highly favorable outcome (P = 0.001) and normal, or impaired but stable, renal function
