Journalism in the Community Classroom A Curriculum Model for Cultural Journalism in Oklahoma
This paper introduces the medium of cultural journalism as an effective means of intensified basic communication training and community involvement. Part one contains a report of a needs assessment and a subsequent pilot project on cultural journalism that was conducted at an Oklahoma high school. The needs assessment also reports on similar projects conducted in and around the Oklahoma region, the attitudes of community members toward such a project, the problems and possibilities associated with such curriculum development, and advice from other proponents of experience based education. The report on the pilot project that resulted from the needs assessment--a 36-page magazine produced within the regular newspaper journalism class--includes responses from both students and members of the community. The second part of the paper focuses on the development of a curriculum model designed to expand on the pilot project. This section contains general information about organizing cultural journalism projects, including planning the project, implementing the program, designing basic curriculum modules (ten are outlined), and evaluating the program. A selected bibliography and appendixes of data and material used in the needs assessment and the pilot project are also provided

Visualization of Flagella during Bacterial Swarming
When cells of Escherichia coli are grown in broth and suspended at low density in a motility medium, they swim independently, exploring a homogeneous, isotropic environment. Cell trajectories and the way in which these trajectories are determined by flagellar dynamics are well understood. When cells are grown in a rich medium on agar instead, they elongate, produce more flagella, and swarm. They move in coordinated packs within a thin film of fluid, in intimate contact with one another and with two fixed surfaces, a surfactant monolayer above and an agar matrix below: they move in an inhomogeneous, anisotropic environment. Here we examine swarm-cell trajectories and ways in which these trajectories are determined by flagellar motion, visualizing the cell bodies by phase-contrast microscopy and the flagellar filaments by fluorescence microscopy. We distinguish four kinds of tracks, defining stalls, reversals, lateral movement, and forward movement. When cells are stalled at the edge of a colony, they extend their flagellar filaments outwards, moving fluid over the virgin agar; when cells reverse, changes in filament chirality play a crucial role; when cells move laterally, they are pushed sideways by adjacent cells; and when cells move forward, they are pushed by flagellar bundles in the same way as when they are swimming in bulk aqueous media. Proximity Operations and Docking Sensor Development
The Next Generation Advanced Video Guidance Sensor (NGAVGS) has been under development for the last three years as a long-range proximity operations and docking sensor for use in an Automated Rendezvous and Docking (AR&D) system. The first autonomous rendezvous and docking in the history of the U.S. Space Program was successfully accomplished by Orbital Express, using the Advanced Video Guidance Sensor (AVGS) as the primary docking sensor. That flight proved that the United States now has a mature and flight proven sensor technology for supporting Crew Exploration Vehicles (CEV) and Commercial Orbital Transport Systems (COTS) Automated Rendezvous and Docking (AR&D). NASA video sensors have worked well in the past: the AVGS used on the Demonstration of Autonomous Rendezvous Technology (DART) mission operated successfully in spot mode out to 2 km, and the first generation rendezvous and docking sensor, the Video Guidance Sensor (VGS), was developed and successfully flown on Space Shuttle flights in 1997 and 1998. 12 Parts obsolescence issues prevent the construction of more AVGS units, and the next generation sensor was updated to allow it to support the CEV and COTS programs. The flight proven AR&D sensor has been redesigned to update parts and add additional capabilities for CEV and COTS with the development of the Next Generation AVGS at the Marshall Space Flight Center. The obsolete imager and processor are being replaced with new radiation tolerant parts. In addition, new capabilities include greater sensor range, auto ranging capability, and real-time video output. This paper presents some sensor hardware trades, use of highly integrated laser components, and addresses the needs of future vehicles that may rendezvous and dock with the International Space Station (ISS) and other Constellation vehicles. It also discusses approaches for upgrading AVGS to address parts obsolescence, and concepts for minimizing the sensor footprint, weight, and power requirements. In addition, the testing of the brassboard and proto-type NGAVGS units will be discussed along with the use of the NGAVGS as a proximity operations and docking sensor
A Systematic Search for Structure-Activity Relationships of Skin Contact Sensitizers: Methodology
A computerized resource for the systematic evaluation of the structure-activity relationships and other aspects of contact allergens is described. This resource consists of a data base of results of contact dermatitis tests and a structural classification scheme for contact allergens that is called a Structure-Activity (S/A) Tree. The data base now contains approximately 2200 test results extracted from the journal Contact Dermatitis (1975–1982) and is continually being expanded. The S/A Tree is being developed to provide an index to structure-activity relationships of contact allergens; 63 structural groups are currently indexed. Analyses of benzoquinones and gallic acid esters are presented as examples of the potential application of this resource to such problems as the identification of potential cross-reactants, appropriate test concentrations and vehicles, and the reliability of available test results
Hydrodynamic attraction of swimming microorganisms by surfaces
Cells swimming in confined environments are attracted by surfaces. We measure
the steady-state distribution of smooth-swimming bacteria (Escherichia coli)
between two glass plates. In agreement with earlier studies, we find a strong
increase of the cell concentration at the boundaries. We demonstrate
theoretically that hydrodynamic interactions of the swimming cells with solid
surfaces lead to their re-orientation in the direction parallel to the
surfaces, as well as their attraction by the closest wall. A model is derived
for the steady-state distribution of swimming cells, which compares favorably
with our measurements. We exploit our data to estimate the flagellar propulsive
force in swimming E. coli

spilled by the barge FLORIDA off West Falmouth, Massachusetts, we sampled for many
months along an onshore-offshore gradient of pollution, and less intensively at unoiled sites.
Analyses of hydrocarbons established that pollution was greatest and most persistent in the
intertidal and subtidal zones of Wild Harbor River, less severe in degree and duration at stations farthest from shore. A variety of concurrent analyses showed that disturbance of the fauna
was most severe and longest lasting at the most heavily oiled sites, and least severe but perceptible
at lightly oiled stations. Patterns of disturbance were not related to granulometry of
the sediments. Plants, ctustaceans, fish, and birds suffered both high mortality immediately
after the spill, and physiological and behavioral abnormalities directly related to high concentrations
of the fuel oil. Five years after the spill its effects on the biota were still detectable, and
partly degraded #2 fuel oil was still present in the sediments in Wild Harbor River and estuary.Our study was partially supported by the Federal Water Pollution Control

Community engagement and financial arrangements: navigating institutional change
Despite their documented benefits, the widespread adoption of community-engaged and participatory approaches among health researchers remains limited. Institutional practices and policies influence the uptake of community engagement and participatory approaches. We examine the role of financial arrangements between university researchers and community partners, by exploring efforts to bridge the gap between research administration and researchers at two research-intensive institutions. The type of financial arrangement a researcher has with a community partner plays an important role in setting the stage for the structure of the partnership as it relates to shared decision-making and ownership of the research. Continued efforts to clarify and streamline subcontracting processes are needed as is infrastructure to support community partners and researchers as they navigate financial arrangements if progress is to be made.Published versio
26085 Key efficacy and safety of apremilast in patients with mild to moderate plaque psoriasis in the phase 3 ADVANCE trial
Background: In ADVANCE, apremilast 30 mg BID (APR) demonstrated efficacy in mild-to-moderate psoriasis vs placebo (PBO). We report subgroup analyses by baseline psoriasis-involved BSA (≤5%, \u3e5%).
Methods: Biologic-naive adults with mild-to-moderate psoriasis (sPGA 2-3, BSA 2%-15%, PASI 2-15) inadequately controlled with or intolerant to ≥1 topical were randomized to APR or PBO for 16 weeks. At Week 16, endpoints were compared between treatment groups and by baseline BSA.
Results: At baseline, 284 patients had BSA ≤5% (APR: 143; PBO: 141); 311 had BSA \u3e5% (APR: 154; PBO: 157). Overall, a greater proportion of APR patients achieved the primary endpoint, sPGA response (score 0/1 [clear/almost clear] with ≥2-point reduction at Week 16) vs PBO (21.6% vs 4.1%, P 5%: 54.6% vs 14.9%, P 5%: 45.4% vs 17.6%, P 5%: 50.6% vs 19.2%, P 5%: 11.0 vs 10.0 DLQI 5-point improvement (baseline DLQI \u3e5): - BSA≤5%: 56.6% vs 31.2%, P =.0002 - BSA\u3e5%: 64.4% vs 36.4%, P ˂.0001.
Conclusions: Greater proportions of patients achieved efficacy outcomes and greater improvements in QOL with APR vs PBO. Comparable improvements were observed between mild and moderate subgroups
