В XVI в.
Epitaxial growth of topological insulator Bi2Se3 film on Si(111) with atomically sharp interface
Atomically sharp epitaxial growth of Bi2Se3 films is achieved on Si (111)
substrate with MBE (Molecular Beam Epitaxy). Two-step growth process is found
to be a key to achieve interfacial-layer-free epitaxial Bi2Se3 films on Si
substrates. With a single-step high temperature growth, second phase clusters
are formed at an early stage. On the other hand, with low temperature growth,
the film tends to be disordered even in the absence of a second phase. With a
low temperature initial growth followed by a high temperature growth,
second-phase-free atomically sharp interface is obtained between Bi2Se3 and Si
substrate, as verified by RHEED (Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction),
TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) and XRD (X-Ray Diffraction). The lattice
constant of Bi2Se3 is observed to relax to its bulk value during the first
quintuple layer according to RHEED analysis, implying the absence of strain
from the substrate. TEM shows a fully epitaxial structure of Bi2Se3 film down
to the first quintuple layer without any second phase or an amorphous layer.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure
Quantifying the area of edge zones in Swedish forest to assess the impact of nature conservation on timber yields
The new Swedish Forestry Act states that the forests should be sustainably managed in
a profitable way and, at the same time, the current levels of biodiversity should be
maintained. This and the pressure from consumers for forest products to be produced
in a way that protects biodiversity have changed forestry towards a more nature
oriented management. An estimation of the effects of this nature conservation on
timber yields and potential cut must be included in forest scenario modelling to assess
the long term impacts.
An important component of preserving biodiversity in forests in this nature oriented
management is to adjust management measures in edge zones adjacent to mires,
riparian zones, non-productive hills, etc. Examples of management measures in edge
zones are no cutting, modified thinning, single tree selection or leaving behind large
trees. These spatial considerations can now be dealt with in long-term forecasts using
HUGIN, a system based on sample plot data from the Swedish National Forest
Inventory (NFI). This is because of the improved description of the context of the NFI
sample plots in the landscape. Furthermore, geographical positions are determined
using the Global Positioning System (GPS), which facilitates the combination of NFI
data with other data sources.
A schedule of how to select sample plots located in forest habitats that are valuable for
biodiversity is shown.
Analyses of the new NFI data show that approximately 11 % of the productive forest
land is located within 25 meters of mires and non-productive hills and 3 % is located
in riparian zones. Forest scenario modelling using the HUGIN system will now be able
to estimate the reductions in the long-term potential cut due to nature conservation in
edge zones
• Anpassningarna ökar mängden lagrad kol i
stamved.

Steps Towards Integrating Carbon Dioxide Sources and Sinks into Local Environmental Planning
Anthropogenic carbon dioxide balancing can be evaluated by counting the amount of emissions and the sinks that absorb and release carbon. Local level planning can affect the emission-sinks balance. However when trying to meet international goals, it seems that local government mainly considers emission reduction and not sink losses. This paper investigates the implications of using carbon dioxide emissions and forest ecosystems as sinks in Swedish municipal planning. The results demonstrate how emission reduction can be offset by the losses in sinks derived by land use and transportation planning. This moves local government further away from achieving the national emission reduction goal. The results also show a potential for carbon trading between municipalities.
Factors Influencing the Choice of Management Strategy among Small-Scale Private Forest Owners in Sweden
Half of the productive forest area in Sweden is owned by small-scale private forest owners. However, there is a lack of comprehensive information that would allow categorizing small-scale private forest owners according to their management strategy. In this study, we surveyed small-scale private forest owners in Sweden to determine the proportions who applied various management strategies. We analyzed the results using chi-square tests to identify the most relevant factors affecting the management strategy choices of individual forest owners. We found that “soft” factors, such as the importance of income from the forest, membership in a forest owners’ association, certification and an interest in and knowledge of forestry issues, had a stronger impact on the choice of management strategy than most “hard” factors related to the owner or the property, such as gender and distance between the owner’s residence and the property. However, property size was the most important factor and was associated with the importance of income derived from the forest and several other soft factors
