Nonsolar astronomy with the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI)
The Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) is a NASA Small Explorer satellite designed to study hard x-ray and gamma-ray emission from solar flares. In addition, its high-resolution array of germanium detectors can see photons from high-energy sources throughout the Universe. Here we discuss the various algorithms necessary to extract spectra, lightcurves, and other information about cosmic gamma-ray bursts, pulsars, and other astrophysical phenomena using an unpointed, spinning array of detectors. We show some preliminary results and discuss our plans for future analyses. All RHESSI data are public, and scientists interested in participating should contact the principal author

High thymidylate synthase gene expression predicts poor outcome after resection of hepatocellular carcinoma.
IntroductionPrognosis after resection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is highly variable. Compared to clinicopathologic factors, the use of molecular markers to predict outcome has not been well studied. We investigated the prognostic importance of thymidylate synthase (TS) gene expression and polymorphisms in patients after resection of HCC.MethodsPatients who underwent complete resection of HCC for whom tissue was available were identified. TS gene expression level and polymorphisms were determined in HCC specimens. Prognostic factors were evaluated using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazard models.ResultsThe study included 67 patients. In univariate analysis, variables that negatively influenced survival included TNM stage, microvascular invasion, and high TS expression. For the high TS expression group, median survival was 54 months and 5-year actuarial survival was 47%. For the low TS expression group, median survival was not reached and the 5-year actuarial survival was 91%. In multivariate analysis, only high TS expression remained an independent predictor of poor survival (HR = 10.77, 95% CI 1.36-84.91; P = 0.02). TS gene polymorphisms were not associated with TS expression or overall survival.ConclusionsHigh TS expression predicts poor outcome after resection of HCC. Molecular markers might be robust predictors of patient outcome after resection of HCC
Type 1 ryanodine receptor in cardiac mitochondria: Transducer of excitationâmetabolism coupling
AbstractMitochondria in a variety of cell types respond to physiological Ca2+ oscillations in the cytosol dynamically with Ca2+ uptakes. In heart cells, mitochondrial Ca2+ uptakes occur by a ruthenium red-sensitive Ca2+ uniporter (CaUP), a rapid mode of Ca2+ uptake (RaM) and a ryanodine receptor (RyR) localized in the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM). Three subtypes of RyRs have been described and cloned, however, the subtype identity of the mitochondrial ryanodine receptor (mRyR) is unknown. Using subtype specific antibodies, we characterized the mRyR in the IMM from rat heart as RyR1. These results are substantiated by the absence of RyR protein in heart mitochondria from RyR1 knockout mice. The bell-shape Ca2+-dependent [3H]ryanodine binding curve and its modulation by caffeine and adenylylmethylenediphosphonate (AMPPCP) give further evidence that mRyR functions pharmacologically like RyR1. Ryanodine prevents mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake induced by raising extramitochondrial Ca2+ to 10 ÎŒM. Similarly, ryanodine inhibits oxidative phosphorylation stimulated by 10 ÎŒM extramitochondrial Ca2+. In summary, our results show that the mRyR in cardiac muscle has similar biochemical and pharmacological properties to the RyR1 in the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) of skeletal muscle. These results could also suggest an efficient mechanism by which mitochondria sequesters Ca2+ via mRyR during excitationâcontraction coupling to stimulate oxidative phosphorylation for ATP production to meet metabolic demands. Wave generation, dissipation, and disequilibrium in an embayment with complex bathymetry

Journal of Geophysical Research-Oceans, 123(11), (2018): 7856-7876, doi:10.1029/2018JC014381.Heterogeneous, sharply varying bathymetry is common in estuaries and embayments, and complex interactions between the bathymetry and wave processes fundamentally alter the distribution of wave energy. The mechanisms that control the generation and dissipation of wind waves in an embayment with heterogeneous, sharply varying bathymetry are evaluated with an observational and numerical study of the Delaware Estuary. Waves in the lower bay depend on both local wind forcing and remote wave forcing from offshore, but elsewhere in the estuary waves are controlled by the local winds and the response of the wavefield to bathymetric variability. Differences in the wavefield with wind direction highlight the impacts of heterogeneous bathymetry and limited fetch. Under the typical winter northwest wind conditions waves are fetchâlimited in the middle estuary and reach equilibrium with local water depth only in the lower bay. During southerly wind conditions typical of storms, wave energy is near equilibrium in the lower bay, and midestuary waves are attenuated by the combination of whitecapping and bottom friction, particularly over the steep, longitudinal shoals. Although the energy dissipation due to bottom friction is generally small relative to whitecapping, it becomes significant where the waves shoal abruptly due to steep bottom topography. In contrast, directional spreading keeps wave heights in the main channel significantly less than local equilibrium. Study of charge control and gate tunneling in a ferroelectric-oxide-silicon field effect transistor: Comparison with a conventional metal-oxide-silicon structure
It is known that conventional metal-oxide-silicon (MOS) devices will have gate tunneling related problems at very thin oxide thicknesses. Various high-dielectric-constant materials are being examined to suppress the gate currents. In this article we present theoretical results of a charge control and gate tunneling model for a ferroelectric-oxide-silicon field effect transistor and compare them to results for a conventional MOS device. The potential of high polarization charge to induce inversion without doping and high dielectric constant to suppress tunneling current is explored. The model is based on a self-consistent solution of the quantum problem and includes the ferroelectric hysteresis response self-consistently. We show that the polarization charge associated with ferroelectrics can allow greater controllability of the inversion layer charge density. Prevalence of sessile serrated adenoma/polyp in hyperplastic appearing diminutive rectosigmoid polyps
Background
The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy recommends that distal colon hyperplastic lesions can be left in place without resection if adenomatous histology can be excluded with > 90% negative predictive value. However, some of the lesions could be sessile serrated adenoma/polyp (SSA/P), which is also precancerous.
Aim
Describe the prevalence of SSA/P in hyperplastic appearing diminutive rectosigmoid polyps.
Methods
We prospectively placed 513 consecutive diminutive rectosigmoid polyps that appeared hyperplastic to an expert endoscopist in individual bottles for pathologic examination. Each polyp was examined by 3 expert gastrointestinal pathologists.
Results
The prevalence of SSA/P in the study polyps ranged from 0.6% to 2.1%. The endoscopists lowest negative predictive value for the combination of adenomas plus SSA/P was 96.7%
Conclusions
The prevalence of SSA/P in diminutive rectosigmoid hyperplastic appearing polyps is very low. These results support the safety and feasibility of a âdo not resectâ policy for diminutive hyperplastic appearing rectosigmoid polyps
