    The role of English as a lingua franca in social integration: The case of the international students of a university in Taiwan

    Globalization and the ease of mobility across nations in the last decade or so have brought some fundamental changes to the structural organization and operation of universities worldwide. To enhance global competitiveness, East Asian universities, in particular, have seen a growth in the intake of international students. A majority of the previous studies on students studying abroad were undertaken in the context of English-speaking countries such as the UK and USA; research investigating students coming from afar to study in countries which are predominantly Chinese-speaking appears to be lacking. Even scanter is the work related to how this group of students navigates through the social way-of-life at the university. This article explores the social integration of the international students of a bilingual university located in northern Taiwan. More specifically, the role English as a lingua franca plays in the integration will be examined based on the narrative accounts of 14 informants. The findings suggest that some institutional and individual obstacles need to be overcome before English can become more widely accepted as the common medium of communication.published_or_final_versio

    Limitations of perturbative techniques in the analysis of rhythms and oscillations

    Perturbation theory is an important tool in the analysis of oscillators and their response to external stimuli. It is predicated on the assumption that the perturbations in question are “sufficiently weak”, an assumption that is not always valid when perturbative methods are applied. In this paper, we identify a number of concrete dynamical scenarios in which a standard perturbative technique, based on the infinitesimal phase response curve (PRC), is shown to give different predictions than the full model. Shear-induced chaos, i.e., chaotic behavior that results from the amplification of small perturbations by underlying shear, is missed entirely by the PRC. We show also that the presence of “sticky” phase–space structures tend to cause perturbative techniques to overestimate the frequencies and regularity of the oscillations. The phenomena we describe can all be observed in a simple 2D neuron model, which we choose for illustration as the PRC is widely used in mathematical neuroscience

    The predictability of serum anti-Müllerian level in IVF/ICSI outcomes for patients of advanced reproductive age

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The role of serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) as predictor of in-vitro fertilization outcomes has been much debated. The aim of the present study is to investigate the practicability of combining serum AMH level with biological age as a simple screening method for counseling IVF candidates of advanced reproductive age with potential poor outcomes prior to treatment initiation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 1,538 reference patients and 116 infertile patients aged greater than or equal to 40 years enrolled in IVF/ICSI cycles were recruited in this retrospective analysis. A reference chart of the age-related distribution of serum AMH level for Asian population was first created. IVF/ICSI patients aged greater than or equal to 40 years were then divided into three groups according to the low, middle and high tertiles the serum AMH tertiles derived from the reference population of matching age. The cycle outcomes were analyzed and compared among each individual group.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>For reference subjects aged greater than or equal to 40 years, the serum AMH of the low, middle and high tertiles were equal or lesser than 0.48, 0.49-1.22 and equal or greater than 1.23 ng/mL respectively. IVF/ICSI patients aged greater than or equal to 40 years with AMH levels in the low tertile had the highest cycle cancellation rate (47.6%) with zero clinical pregnancy. The nadir AMH level that has achieved live birth was 0.56 ng/mL, which was equivalent to the 36.4th percentile of AMH level from the age-matched reference group. The optimum cut-off levels of AMH for the prediction of nonpregnancy and cycle cancellation were 1.05 and 0.68 ng/mL, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Two criteria: (1) age greater than or equal to 40 years and (2) serum AMH level in the lowest tertile (equal or lesser than 33.3rd percentile) of the matching age group, may be used as markers of futility for counseling IVF/ICSI candidates.</p

    Smoking cessation and carotid atherosclerosis: The guangzhou biobank cohort studydCVD

    Introduction Smoking has been shown to be associated with carotid atherosclerosis in cross-sectional and prospective studies in Western populations. However, few studies have examined the reversal of risk resulting from quitting smoking, and the results are conflicting. Methods 959 men aged 50e85 years were randomly selected from phase III (2006e2007) of the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study into this cross-sectional study. Common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCAIMT) was measured by B-mode ultrasonography, and carotid artery plaques were identified. Major cardiovascular risk factors, including fasting triglyceride, low-density and high-density lipoprotein (LDL and HDL) cholesterol and glucose, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure, were assessed. Results CCA-IMT and the number of carotid plaque increased from never to former to current smokers (both p≤0.001). Among former smokers compared to current smokers, after adjustment for cigarette pack-years and other potential confounders, the adjusted ORs (95% CI) for quitting for 1-9, 10-19 and 20+ years were 0.77 (0.47 to 1.26), 0.45 (0.26 to 0.79) and 0.37 (0.17 to 0.77) for the presence of CCA atherosclerosis, and 0.69 (0.43 to 1.12), 0.47 (0.27 to 0.82) and 0.45 (0.23 to 0.96) for the presence of carotid plaques, respectively. Longer duration of quitting smoking was also significantly associated with decreasing risk of the severity of CCA atherosclerosis and carotid plaques (all p≤0.001). Conclusion Smoking cessation was beneficial in attenuating the risk of carotid atherosclerosis associated with cigarette smoking. The short duration of cessation in earlier studies is a likely explanation for the inconsistent results.published_or_final_versio

    An AUC-based Permutation Variable Importance Measure for Random Forests

    The random forest (RF) method is a commonly used tool for classification with high dimensional data as well as for ranking candidate predictors based on the so-called random forest variable importance measures (VIMs). However the classification performance of RF is known to be suboptimal in case of strongly unbalanced data, i.e. data where response class sizes differ considerably. Suggestions were made to obtain better classification performance based either on sampling procedures or on cost sensitivity analyses. However to our knowledge the performance of the VIMs has not yet been examined in the case of unbalanced response classes. In this paper we explore the performance of the permutation VIM for unbalanced data settings and introduce an alternative permutation VIM based on the area under the curve (AUC) that is expected to be more robust towards class imbalance. We investigated the performance of the standard permutation VIM and of our novel AUC-based permutation VIM for different class imbalance levels using simulated data and real data. The results suggest that the standard permutation VIM loses its ability to discriminate between associated predictors and predictors not associated with the response for increasing class imbalance. It is outperformed by our new AUC-based permutation VIM for unbalanced data settings, while the performance of both VIMs is very similar in the case of balanced classes. The new AUC-based VIM is implemented in the R package party for the unbiased RF variant based on conditional inference trees.     Energy Efficiency Optimization for Plane Spiral OAM Mode-Group Based MIMO-NOMA Systems

    In this paper, a plane spiral orbital angular momentum (PS-OAM) mode-groups (MGs) based multi-user multiple-input-multiple-out-put (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system is studied, where a base station (BS) transmits date to multiple users by utilizing the generated PSOAM beams. For such scenario, the interference between users in different PSOAM-mode groups can be avoided, which leads to a significant performance enhancement. We aim to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the system subject to the total transmission power constraint and the minimum rate constraint. This design problem is non-convex by optimizing the power allocation, and thus is quite difficult to tackle directly. To solve this issue, we present a bisection-based power allocation algorithm where the bisection method is exploited in the outer layer to obtain the optimal EE and a power distributed iterative algorithm is exploited in the inner layer to optimize the transmit power. Simulation results validate the theoretical findings and demonstrate the proposed system can achieve better performance than the traditional multi-user MIMO system in terms of EE

    Plane spiral orbital angular momentum (PSOAM) mode-groups (MGs) and multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) serve as two emerging techniques for achieving high spectral efficiency (SE) in the next-generation networks. In this paper, a PSOAM MGs based multi-user MIMO-NOMA system is studied, where the base station transmits data to users by utilizing the generated PSOAM beams. This designed optimization problem is non-convex owing to the interference among users, and hence is quite difficult to tackle directly. To solve this issue, we develop a dual layer resource allocation algorithm where the bisection method is exploited in the outer layer to obtain the optimal EE and a resource distributed iterative algorithm is exploited in the inner layer to optimize the transmit power. Besides, an alternative resource allocation algorithm with Deep Belief Networks (DBN) is proposed to cope with the requirement for low computational complexity. Simulation results verify the theoretical findings and demonstrate the proposed algorithms on the PSOAM MGs based MIMO-NOMA system can obtain a better performance comparing to the conventional MIMO-NOMA system in terms of EE

    Active RIS Assisted Rate-Splitting Multiple Access Network: Spectral and Energy Efficiency Tradeoff

    With the increasing demand of high data rate and massive access in both ultra-dense and industrial Internet-of-things networks, spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) are regarded as two important and inter-related performance metrics for future networks. In this paper, we investigate a novel integration of rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) into cellular systems to achieve a desirable tradeoff between SE and EE. Different from the commonly used passive RIS, we adopt reflection elements with active load to improve a newly defined metric, called resource efficiency (RE), which is capable of striking a balance between SE and EE. This paper focuses on the RE optimization by jointly designing the base station (BS) transmit precoding and RIS beamforming (BF) while guaranteeing the transmit and forward power budgets of the BS and RIS, respectively. To efficiently tackle the challenges for solving the RE maximization problem due to its fractional objective function, coupled optimization variables, and discrete coefficient constraint, the formulated nonconvex problem is solved by proposing a two-stage optimization framework. For the outer stage problem, a quadratic transformation is used to recast the fractional objective into a linear form, and a closed-form solution is obtained by using auxiliary variables. For the inner stage problem, the system sum rate is approximated into a linear function. Then, an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is proposed to optimize the BS precoding and RIS BF iteratively, by utilizing the penalty dual decomposition (PDD) method. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed design compared to other benchmarks

    Energy Efficient Resource Allocation for UCA-Based OAM-MIMO System

    The combination of orbital angular momentum (OAM) and multi-input multi-output (MIMO) is identified as an effective solution to improve energy efficiency (EE) in the next-generation wireless communication. According to the orthogonality of OAM, we adopt uniform circular array (UCA) to establish the transmitter and receiver of the OAM-MIMO system in this paper. Our goal is to maximize the EE of the system whilst satisfying the maximum total transmit power and the minimum capacity requirement of each mode. Due to the inter-interference of different UCA at the same mode, the optimization problem involving the power allocation of modes is non-convex, thus is difficult to solve directly. To tackle this problem, the optimization problem is transformed into two sub-problems by using the fractional programming. Then we develop a dual-layer iteration algorithm where the nonconvex power allocation problem is transformed into a convex problem by exploiting the the first-order Taylor approximation in the inner layer, and the dichotomy is used to update EE in the outer layer. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed solution, and demonstrate the superiority of the OAM-MIMO system over the conventional MIMO system from the perspective of EE
