    Peru is a South American nation with a growing and aging population of 31 million people with a life expectancy at birth of 76.7 years. The country is divided into 25 regions, 79% of the population is urban, and Lima, the capital, concentrates more than a third of the population.1 Although Peru is an upper-middle-income country, health expenditure represents only 5.1% of the gross domestic product, which is lower than the average of Latin America and the Caribbean (LATAM) (8.56%).2 Out-of-pocket health expenditure is 30.9%.3 Peru has a comprehensive National Cancer Plan and two population-based cancer registries in Lima and Arequipa.Revisi贸n por pare

    El c谩ncer como problema de salud p煤blica es complejo y cambiante, obliga a afrontarlo mediante una estrategia integral, transversal, coherente y sostenible basada en experiencias previas y proyectadas al alarmante incremento que muestra esta condici贸n a nivel global. Es imprescindible buscar y respetar consensos, impulsar nuevas tecnolog铆as e investigar estrategias con sensibilidad cultural adecuadas a las comunidades y en las cuales 茅stas participen activamente. Se hace impostergable reforzar el componente educacional e introducir las nuevas tecnolog铆as de informaci贸n y comunicaci贸n, reforzando el sistema desde el nivel primario de atenci贸n. Nuestro objetivo debe ser la disminuci贸n de la morbimortalidad por c谩ncer en el mediano y largo plazo. En este art铆culo se describen algunas de las medidas implementadas para este fin. Consideramos que todas las estrategias de prevenci贸n del c谩ncer deben aplicarse en el contexto de actividades transversales orientadas a prevenir otras enfermedades cr贸nicas, con criterio de salud p煤blica<br>Cancer as a public health issue is changing and complex. It calls for a comprehensive, coherent and horizontal strategy based on previous experiences and considering the alarming increase of this condition worldwide. Therefore, it is imperative to reach and respect consensuses, to promote new technologies and study culturally sensitive strategies that adapt to the communities and involve people to actively participate. Likewise, strengthening the educational component and introducing new information and communication technologies cannot wait, while strengthening the system, from the primary health care level at the same time. Our goal should be to reduce cancer morbidity and mortality rates in the medium and long terms. This article describes some of the measures implemented for that purpose.     Cancer is a public health problem due to its high incidence and mortality, its high social and economic cost, and the lack of intra and intersectorial strategies resulting in failure to access information and screening tests. For this reason, it is necessary to address this problem with a comprehensive and sustainable approach. After performing a diagnosis of the human and material resources at the national level, and after having observed the attitude of healthcare decisors, the Multisector Coalition against Cancer was created with the participation of the public and nonpublic sector. A strategic plan was developed, followed by a national plan for strengthening cancer prevention and control. As a result, intersectorial work and health promotion oriented to cancer prevention through information, education and communication were strengthened. Service supply was improved and optimized through decentralization of oncological care.El c谩ncer es un problema de salud p煤blica debido a su alta incidencia y mortalidad, su elevado costo social y econ贸mico, y por la falta de estrategias intra e intersectoriales, que se evidencia en la falta de acceso a la informaci贸n y a pruebas de tamizaje. Por todo esto, es necesario enfrentarlo integral y sostenidamente en el tiempo. Luego de un diagn贸stico de recursos humanos y materiales a nivel nacional, y de haber observado la actitud de los decisores en salud, se decidi贸 la creaci贸n de la Coalici贸n Multisectorial Per煤 contra el C谩ncer con la participaci贸n del sector p煤blico y no p煤blico. Se desarroll贸 un plan estrat茅gico, y luego un plan nacional para el fortalecimiento de la prevenci贸n y control del c谩ncer. Como resultado, se ha fortalecido el trabajo intersectorial; la promoci贸n de la salud orientada a la prevenci贸n del c谩ncer mediante informaci贸n, educaci贸n y comunicaci贸n, se mejor贸 y acerc贸 la oferta de servicios mediante la desconcentraci贸n y descentralizaci贸n de la atenci贸n oncol贸gica
