Effects of quercetin on exercise performance, physical activity and blood supply in a novel model of sustained hind-limb ischaemia

Background: There are currently few effective drugs to treat the leg symptoms of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Previous studies have suggested that the nutraceutical, quercetin, can improve exercise performance and reduce pain sensitivity in healthy mice and improve blood supply in a rodent model of acute hind-limb ischaemia. These models may not be relevant to people with PAD. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of quercetin on exercise performance, physical activity and blood supply in a novel mouse model of sustained hind-limb ischaemia. Methods: Hind-limb ischaemia was induced in 6-month-old male apolipoprotein E-deficient mice using a novel two-stage surgical procedure. Five days after induction of ischaemia, mice were allocated to commence dietary quercetin or a control diet for 4 weeks. The primary outcome was exercise performance evaluated using a treadmill test. Other outcomes included physical activity, estimated by an open field test, and hind-limb blood supply, assessed by laser Doppler monitoring. Results: A sustained reduction in relative limb blood supply (P < 0.001) was achieved consistently in all 48 mice before allocation to a control (n = 24) or quercetin (n = 24) diet. Quercetin did not improve exercise performance (P = 0.785), physical activity (P = 0.151) or relative limb blood supply (P = 0.954) over the 4-week assessment period. Conclusion: These data suggest that quercetin does not improve exercise performance, physical activity or limb blood supply in mice with sustained hind-limb ischaemia, and therefore is unlikely be an effective treatment for PAD

    Escolarização De Alunos Com Autismo

The inclusion of students with disabilities at school poses great challenges to educational policy. In the case of autism, communication and interaction difficulties add to the already existing barriers to the participation of students in the school setting. For this reason, in the present study, we proposed to investigate the autism schooling in a city in the state of São Paulo. We aimed at analyzing school access and stay of these students, and at characterizing the therapeutic and educational resources available to them. It is a descriptive study that analyzed data from the Basic Education Census of Atibaia between 2009 and 2012. The results show that the enrolment of students with autism is concentrated in public regular schools. Some of the students are enrolled in special schools. The study points, also, to the great number of students that evade the school system. In general, the schooling process of students with autism does not come to completion and few reach high school. © 2016, Associacao Brasileira de Pesquisadores em Educacao Especial. Structural and optical studies of FeSb2 under high pressure

Nanostructured orthorhombic FeSb2 and an amorphous phase were formed by mechanical alloying starting from a mixture of high purity elemental Fe and Sb powders. The effects of high pressures on structural and optical properties were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy (RS). XRD patterns showed the presence of the orthorhombic FeSb2 phase up to the maximum pressure applied (28.2 GPa). The XRD patterns showed also an increase in the amount of the amorphous phase with increasing pressure up to 23.3 GPa. At 14.3 GPa, together with the former phases, a new phase was observed and indexed to a tetragonal FeSb2 phase, but its volume fraction is small at least up to 23.3 GPa. For the orthorhombic FeSb2 phase, the pressure dependence of the volume fitted to a Birch-Murnaghan equation of state gave a bulk modulus = 74.2 +- 3.0 GPa and its pressure derivative = 7.5 +- 0.6. RS measurements were performed from atmospheric pressure up to 45.2 GPa. For the orthorhombic FeSb2 phase, the Raman active mode was observed up to the maximum pressure applied, while the mode disappeared at 16.6 GPa. For pressures higher than 21 GPa, the Raman active mode of a tetragonal FeSb2 phase was observed, confirming ab initio calculations reported in the literature.Comment: 31 pages, 11 figures and 2 tables. Higher spin fields and the problem of cosmological constant

    Get PDF
The cosmological evolution of free massless vector or tensor (but not gauge) fields minimally coupled to gravity is analyzed. It is shown that there are some unstable solutions for these fields in De Sitter background. The back reaction of the energy-momentum tensor of such solutions to the original cosmological constant exactly cancels the latter and the expansion regime changes from the exponential to the power law one. In contrast to the adjustment mechanism realized by a scalar field the gravitational coupling constant in this model is time-independent and the resulting cosmology may resemble the realistic one.Comment: 15 pages, Latex twic

Towards predicting liquid fuel physicochemical properties using molecular dynamics guided machine learning models

    Get PDF
Accurate determination of fuel properties of complex mixtures over a wide range of pressure and temperature conditions is essential to utilizing alternative fuels. The present work aims to construct cheap-to-compute machine learning (ML) models to act as closure equations for predicting the physical properties of alternative fuels. Those models can be trained using the database from MD simulations and/or experimental measurements in a data-fusion-fidelity approach. Here, Gaussian Process (GP) and probabilistic generative models are adopted. GP is a popular non-parametric Bayesian approach to build surrogate models mainly due to its capacity to handle the aleatory and epistemic uncertainties. Generative models have shown the ability of deep neural networks employed with the same intent. In this work, ML analysis is focused on two particular properties, the fuel density and diffusion, but it can also be extended to other physicochemical properties. This study explores the versatility of the ML models to handle multi-fidelity data. The results show that ML models can predict accurately the fuel properties of a wide range of pressure and temperature conditions. The research leading to these results had received funding from the Brazilian National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) through Programa de Recursos Humanos (PRH) under the PRH 8 - Mechanical Engineering for the Efficient Use of Biofuels, grant agreement numbers F0A5.EDDE.B5C0.3BCB and 2B61.4F5C.A83B.A713.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Cytogenetic Analysis Of Four Central Amazonian Species Of Colostethus (anura - Dendrobatidae) With A Diploid Complement Of 22 Chromosomes

Colostethus marchesianus from the type locality and three related species had 2n = 22 chromosomes, which differed from most other Colostethus species that have 2n = 24 chromosomes. The species analyzed were morphologically similar and showed a conservative karyotype, although they could be distinguished from each other by their C-banding pattern. Additional NOR sites, heteromorphism in NOR size and heterochromatin, and an additional rDNA site detected by FISH, were observed. These data suggest that chromosomal rearrangements and hetrochromatin-related events may have contributed to the karyotype differentiation of these Colostethus.1393189198Aguiar-Jr., O., Lima, A.P., Giaretta, A.A., Cytogenetics analysis of four poison frogs of the Epipedobates genus (Anura - Dendrobatidae) (2002) Herpetologica, 58, pp. 293-303Bogart, J.P., The influence of life history on karyotypic evolution in frogs (1991) Amphibian Cytogenetics and Evolution, pp. 233-258. , In: Green, D. Cosmological models with linearly varying deceleration parameter

We propose a new law for the deceleration parameter that varies linearly with time and covers Berman's law where it is constant. Our law not only allows one to generalize many exact solutions that were obtained assuming constant deceleration parameter, but also gives a better fit with data (from SNIa, BAO and CMB), particularly concerning the late time behavior of the universe. According to our law only the spatially closed and flat universes are allowed; in both cases the cosmological fluid we obtain exhibits quintom like behavior and the universe ends with a big-rip. This is a result consistent with recent cosmological observations.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures; some typo corrections; to appear in International Journal of Theoretical Physic

Frictional drag between non-equilibrium charged gases

The frictional drag force between separated but coupled two-dimensional electron gases of different temperatures is studied using the non-equilibrium Green function method based on the separation of center-of-mass and relative dynamics of electrons. As the mechanisms of producing the frictional force we include the direct Coulomb interaction, the interaction mediated via virtual and real TA and LA phonons, optic phonons, plasmons, and TA and LA phonon-electron collective modes. We found that, when the distance between the two electron gases is large, and at intermediate temperature where plasmons and collective modes play the most important role in the frictional drag, the possibility of having a temperature difference between two subsystems modifies greatly the transresistivity.Comment: 8figure
