    Plane flame furnace combustion tests on JPL desulfurized coal

    The combustion characteristics of three raw bituminous (PSOC-282 and 276) and subbituminous (PSOC-230) coals, the raw coals partially desulfurized (ca -60%) by JPL chlorinolysis, and the chlorinated coals more completely desulfurized (ca -75%) by JPL hydrodesulfurization were determined. The extent to which the combustion characteristics of the untreated coals were altered upon JPL sulfur removal was examined. Combustion conditions typical of utility boilers were simulated in the plane flame furnace. Upon decreasing the parent coal voltaile matter generically by 80% and the sulfur by 75% via the JPL desulfurization process, ignition time was delayed 70 fold, burning velocity was retarded 1.5 fold, and burnout time was prolonged 1.4 fold. Total flame residence time increased 2.3 fold. The JPL desulfurization process appears to show significant promise for producing technologically combustible and clean burning (low SO3) fuels

    The problem of cosmological particle creation for a spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic Universes is discussed in the context of f(R) theories of gravity.     Generation of maximally entangled states of qudits using twin photons

    We report an experiment to generate maximally entangled states of D-dimensional quantum systems, qudits, by using transverse spatial correlations of two parametric down-converted photons. Apertures with D-slits in the arms of the twin fotons define the qudit space. By manipulating the pump beam correctly the twin photons will pass only by symmetrically opposite slits, generating entangled states between these differents paths. Experimental results for qudits with D=4 and D=8 are shown. We demonstrate that the generated states are entangled states.Comment: 04 pages, 04 figure

    Exact Lyapunov Exponent for Infinite Products of Random Matrices

    In this work, we give a rigorous explicit formula for the Lyapunov exponent for some binary infinite products of random 2×22\times 2 real matrices. All these products are constructed using only two types of matrices, AA and BB, which are chosen according to a stochastic process. The matrix AA is singular, namely its determinant is zero. This formula is derived by using a particular decomposition for the matrix BB, which allows us to write the Lyapunov exponent as a sum of convergent series.     Breast skin-line detection using dynamic programming

    In this paper, we present a novel method to extract the breast skin-line based on dynamic programming. Skin-line extraction is an important preprocessing step in CAD systems; however, it is a challenging problem due to the presence of noise, underexposed regions, which results in a low contrast area near the skin-air interface, and artifacts such as labels. Our proposal utilizes the stroma edge to constrain searching for the border. In order to cope with noise, we consider several candidate points for the border interface which are obtained by the Laplace operator applied in pre-defined directions in the mammogram. The breast contour is obtained from the candidate points using a dynamic programming algorithm. This utilizes a criterion of optimality to obtain the optimum contour by minimization of a cost function. The method was evaluated using 82 mammograms whose contour were manually extracted by a radiologist from the mini- MIAS database. The Polyline Distance Measure was evaluated for each contour selected with the proposed method, obtaining a mean error of 2.05 pixels and a standard deviation of 0.80.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

    This work concerns the boundary integrability of the spin-s Uq[sl(2)]{\cal{U}}_{q}[sl(2)] Temperley-Lieb model. A systematic computation method is used to constructed the solutions of the boundary Yang-Baxter equations. For ss half-integer, a general 2s(s+1)+3/22s(s+1)+3/2 free parameter solution is presented. It turns that for ss integer, the general solution has 2s(s+1)+12s(s+1)+1 free parameters. Moreover, some particular solutions are discussed.Comment: LaTex 17 page
