How the Diversity of Curriculum Prepares Future Physician Assistants (PA\u27s) to Provide Healthcare for Underserved Populations Jessica Lim-Wilson, Depts. of Health, Physical Education & Exercise Science and Psychology, with Dr. Christine Booker, Dept. of Kinesiology and Health Sciences This research project was conducted to explore the availability of the diverse curriculum in Physician Assistant programs by region as well as the scope of PA responsibility across the United States. Using the information collected, the association between Physician Assistant curriculum and underserved population health outcomes by region was examined. In conclusion, this research has assisted in understanding the relationship between PA education and health outcomes.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/uresposters/1321/thumbnail.jp

Democracy and Trade: An Empirical Study

    Get PDF
The theoretical discussion on globalization has suggested that there are linkages between democracy and trade, although the direction of influence is less certain. Formal empirical studies remain scarce, and have often focused on the question of whether democratic regimes influence trade policy, as opposed to the actual relationship between democracy and trade. This paper seeks to answer the question, ``Do democracies trade more?'' by applying the gravity equation to a large dataset of bilateral trade data for the period 1948-1999, while taking into account the role of democracy. It finds that democracy has a positive effect on trade flows, but only after controlling for trade pair heterogeneity. In addition, it makes the case for studies of this nature to draw a distinction between trade flows in the pre- and post-1990s period of rapid democratization as well as between developed and developing countries.Democracy, trade, gravity model

Martin Heidegger and the problem of transcendence

This thesis takes its starting point from the early Heidegger’s insight that the meaning of being must be sought through an ontological phenomenology, and specifically, through the existential analytic of Dasein and the destruction of the history of ontology, or, as I broadly construe it, the transcendence of Dasein and the transcendence of being. The study of the problem of transcendence is approached phenomenologically, that is to say, with a concern for the lived experience as such and the conditions of possibility of this experience, as well as the close and critical reading of Heidegger’s works. I bring this approach to bear on my investigation of the problem of transcendence in Heidegger’s corpus and to the debate between analytic (especially pragmatist) and continental scholarship within which I situate my study of Heidegger. I present a phenomenology of the problem of transcendence that is also a phenomenology of meaning, possibility and normativity. Taking my lead from continental readers of Heidegger, I argue that the meaning of being can be understood as the problem of transcendence. The history of philosophy must be disrupted, deconstructed, and rethought such that the unthought path of philosophy is released. The way to the other beginning must be sought in transcendence as such – from the null- based call of conscience, to the authentic encounter with death and the disclosure of temporality, from the historical happening of being, and ultimately, to the refusal of being and the withdrawal of the nothing. The event of being is therefore a self-surpassing process from which the transcendence of being – indeed, the end of questions, as Heidegger puts it – is possible

Credit Constraints and the Productivity of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises: Evidence from Canada

    Get PDF
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are regulators of the business environment. In Canada, SMEs represent about 50 percent of businesses and are responsible for over 60 percent of the country’s employment. The role of SMEs in the development of a country can’t be ignored, as they are vital indicators of economic development. The size and cash flow of a company's assets are reliable indicators of credit constraints (CC), which results in a CC agent for models that use an asset-to-liability ratio. We focus on the actual impact of a previously estimated score in cases where corporate credit is limited. Investment and employment decisions are based on productivity shocks (PS) and the possibility of CC. Using variables, our model indicates the importance of measured credit restrictions being distinguished, such as cash flows that indicate productivity levels and the probability of CC. The data samples are from 2009 to 2014, although the measurement of CC is only available from 2011. Therefore, we use the model of credit constraint estimation to anticipate the likelihood of CC in the months before and after 2011. The findings reflect that the firm’s size, debt to assets ratio, and cash flow are significant factors in the evaluation of the CC, whereas long-term debt (LTD) to asset ratio wasn’t found to be significant. The study also evaluates and estimates firm-level productivity
