    Sulfate alters aerosol absorption properties in East Asian outflow

    Black carbon (BC) and brown carbon (BrC) aerosols that are released from the combustion of fossil fuels and biomass are of great concern because of their light-absorbing ability and great abundance associated with various anthropogenic sources, particularly in East Asia. However, the optical properties of ambient aerosols are dependent on the mixing state and the chemical composition of absorbing and non-absorbing aerosols. Here we examined how, in East Asian outflows, the parameters of the aerosol optical properties can be altered seasonally in conjunction with the mixing state and the chemical composition of aerosols, using 3-year aerosol measurements. Our findings highlight the important role played by sulfate in East Asia during the warm season in both enhancing single scattering albedo (SSA) and altering the absorption properties of aerosols-enhancing mass absorption cross section of BC (MAC(BC)) and reducing MAC of BrC (MAC(BrC),(370)). Therefore we suggest that in global radiative forcing models, particular attention should be paid to the consideration of the accurate treatment of the SO2 emission changes in the coming years in this region that will result from China's air quality policy.Peer reviewe

    ELECTROMYOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS OF TRUNK MUSCLE ACTIVITIES DURING A GOLF SWING

    The purposes of this study were to describe and compare the activation patterns of the trunk muscles during a golf swing using surface electromyographic (EMG) techniques. Five male collegiate golfers were the subjects. The golf swing was broken into five phases using the critical instants identified from video recordings. Wilcoxon signed ranks tests were used to test for significant differences (12 < .05) in average and peak normalized EMG values between the left and right muscles for each phase. The significant bilateral differences in muscle activation were only found in the average and peak rectus abdominus (acceleration phase), external oblique (acceleration and early follow-through phases), and erector spinae (late follow-through phase). The trunk muscles were highly active in the follow-through phases which may indicate the hyperextension of the trunk, which leads to lower back injury

    Characterization of the ATP transporter in the reconstituted rough endoplasmic reticulum proteoliposomes

    AbstractAdenosine triphosphate (ATP) transporter from rat liver rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) was solubilized and reconstituted into phosphatidylcholine liposomes. The RER proteoliposomes, resulting from optimizing some reconstitution parameters, had an apparent Km value of 1.5 Ī¼M and a Vmax of 286 pmol mināˆ’1 (mg protein)āˆ’1 and showed higher affinity for ATP and a lower Vmax value than intact RER (Km of 6.5 Ī¼M and Vmax of 1 nmol). ATP transport was time- and temperature-dependent, inhibited by 4,4ā€²-diisothiocyanostilbene-2,2ā€²-disulfonic acid, which is known as an inhibitor of anion transporters including ATP transporter, but was not affected by atractyloside, a specific inhibitor of mitochondrial ADP/ATP carrier. The internal and external effects of various nucleotides on the ATP transport were examined. ATP transport was cis-inhibited strongly by ADP and weakly by AMP. ADP-preloaded RER proteoliposomes showed a specific increase of ATP transport activity while AMP-preloaded RER proteoliposomes did not show the enhanced overshoot peak in the ATP uptake plot. These results demonstrate the ADP/ATP antiport mechanism of ATP transport in rat liver RER

    Laparoscopic low anterior resection for hematogenous rectal metastasis from gastric adenocarcinoma: A Case Report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Gastric cancer is one of the most common malignancies in the world and is the second most common cause of cancer-related death in Korea. Colorectal metastases from gastric adenocarcinoma are known to be very rare. We report an unusual case of rectal metastasis of gastric adenocarcinoma.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report a case of a 43-year-old female patient with gastric cancer who first presented with epigastric pain. The endoscopic and radiologic findings were suggestive of Borrmann type III advanced gastric cancer with linitis plastica. Radical total gastrectomy with D2 lymph node dissection was performed. The pathology report was AJCC TNM Stage II gastric adenocarcinoma (T3N0M0). On follow up at 34 months after surgery, the patient complained of difficulty in defecation. On colonoscopy, a hard, indurated extraluminal mass was detected 7 cm proximal to the anal verge. The biopsy demonstrated chronic nonspecific colitis. Abdominal CT, rectal MRI and PET-CT revealed rectal metastasis from gastric cancer. Laparoscopic ultralow anterior resection with diverting ileostomy was performed. The pathology report was metastatic adenocarcinoma, and this diagnosis was identical to the gastric pathology reported in the previous pathology report. The patient was discharged after the 11<sup>th </sup>postoperative day with no adverse events.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Rectal metastasis from gastric cancer is known to be very rare. However, metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma should be considered as a differential diagnosis for patients presenting with a colorectal mass and a past history of gastric cancer.</p

    Staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization in a community-based population : a potential role in adult-onset asthma

    Background: Recent studies suggest that Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin sensitization is a risk factor for asthma. However, there is a paucity of epidemiologic evidence on adult-onset asthma in community-based populations. Objective: We sought to evaluate the epidemiology and the clinical significance of staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization in community-based adult populations. Methods: The present analyses were performed using the baseline data set of Korean adult population surveys, consisting of 1080 adults (mean age=60.2years) recruited from an urban and a rural community. Questionnaires, methacholine challenge tests, and allergen skin tests were performed for defining clinical phenotypes. Sera were analysed for total IgE and enterotoxin-specific IgE using ImmunoCAP. Results: Staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization (0.35kU/L) had a prevalence of 27.0%. Risk factors were identified as male sex, current smoking, advanced age (61years), and inhalant allergen sensitization. Current asthma was mostly adult onset (18years old) and showed independent associations with high enterotoxin-specific IgE levels in multivariate logistic regression tests. In multivariate linear regressions, staphylococcal enterotoxin-specific IgE level was identified as the major determinant factor for total IgE level. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization was independently associated with adult-onset asthma in adult community populations. Strong correlations between the enterotoxin-specific IgE and total IgE levels support the clinical significance. The present findings warrant further studies for the precise roles of staphylococcal enterotoxin sensitization in the asthma pathogenesis

    Comparative effects of norepinephrine and vasopressin on internal thoracic arterial graft flow after off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting

    ObjectiveVasoconstrictors such as norepinephrine and vasopressin are commonly used to raise the blood pressure during myocardial revascularization. The internal thoracic artery is commonly used for coronary artery grafting because of its long-term patency. However, the internal thoracic artery is a living conduit that responds to vasoactive substances. The objective of this study was to measure change in internal thoracic arterial flow after infusion of norepinephrine or vasopressin.MethodsForty-one patients undergoing elective off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting participated in this study. After the median sternotomy, the left internal thoracic artery was dissected with a pedicle and grafted to the left anterior descending artery. After all anastomoses were performed and hemodynamic parameters were stable, the grafted internal thoracic arterial blood flow was measured by transit time flowmeter on the distal portion of the graft as a baseline. Norepinephrine or vasopressin was then infused until mean arterial pressure was increased to 20% of baseline. Graft flow and hemodynamic variables were measured when mean arterial pressure reached the intended level.ResultsBaseline grafted internal thoracic arterial flows were similar (norepinephrine 57.1Ā Ā± 17.7 mL mināˆ’1, vasopressin 66.0Ā Ā± 34.3 mL mināˆ’1). With norepinephrine, flow increased significantly relative to baseline (77.2Ā Ā± 31.0 mL mināˆ’1); with vasopressin, it remained unchanged (68.3Ā Ā± 37.0 mL mināˆ’1).ConclusionsFor patients needing vasopressor support after coronary artery bypass grafting, norepinephrine appeared superior to vasopressin because of increased internal thoracic arterial flow

    Thermally-Induced Actuations of Stimuli-Responsive, Bicompartmental Nanofibers for Decoupled Drug Release

    Stimuli-responsive anisotropic microstructures and nanostructures with different physicochemical properties in discrete compartments, have been developed as advanced materials for drug delivery systems, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and biosensing applications. Moreover, their stimuli-triggered actuations would be of great interest for the introduction of the functionality of drug delivery reservoirs and tissue engineering scaffolds. In this study, stimuli-responsive bicompartmental nanofibers (BCNFs), with completely different polymer compositions, were prepared through electrohydrodynamic co-jetting with side-by-side needle geometry. One compartment with thermo-responsiveness was composed of methacrylated poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-allylamine hydrochloride) (poly(NIPAM-co-AAh)), while the counter compartment was made of poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylates (PEGDMA). Both methacrylated poly(NIPAM-co-AAh) and PEGDMA in distinct compartments were chemically crosslinked in a solid phase by UV irradiation and swelled under aqueous conditions, because of the hydrophilicity of both poly(NIPAM-co-AAh) and PEGDMA. As the temperature increased, BCNFs maintained a clear interface between compartments and showed thermally-induced actuation at the nanoscale due to the collapsed poly(NIPAM-co-AAh) compartment under the PEGDMA compartment of identical dimensions. Different model drugs, bovine serum albumin, and dexamethasone phosphate were alternately loaded into each compartment and released at different rates depending on the temperature and molecular weight of the drugs. These BCNFs, as intelligent nanomaterials, have great potential as tissue engineering scaffolds and multi-modal drug delivery reservoirs with stimuli-triggered actuation and decoupled drug release
