    Microstructure Design of Multifunctional Particulate Composite Materials using Conditional Diffusion Models

    This paper presents a novel modeling framework to generate an optimal microstructure having ultimate multifunctionality using a diffusion-based generative model. In computational material science, generating microstructure is a crucial step in understanding the relationship between the microstructure and properties. However, using finite element (FE)-based direct numerical simulation (DNS) of microstructure for multiscale analysis is extremely resource-intensive, particularly in iterative calculations. To address this time-consuming issue, this study employs a diffusion-based generative model as a replacement for computational analysis in design optimization. The model learns the geometry of microstructure and corresponding stress contours, allowing for the prediction of microstructural behavior based solely on geometry, without the need for additional analysis. The focus on this work is on mechanoluminescence (ML) particulate composites made with europium ions and dysprosium ions. Multi-objective optimization is conducted based on the generative diffusion model to improve light sensitivity and fracture toughness. The results show multiple candidates of microstructure that meet the design requirements. Furthermore, the designed microstructure is not present in the training data but generates new morphology following the characteristics of particulate composites. The proposed approach provides a new way to characterize a performance-based microstructure of composite materials

    The open circuit voltage and the short circuit current density of dye sensitized solar cells were increased by adding a titanate co-adsorbant as a blocking agent. This blocking agent effectively prevents back electron transfer. As a result, DSSCs with titanate co-adsorbant showed significantly increased energy conversion efficiency.close0

    Identification of a Novel Single Nucleotide Polymorphism of HADHA Gene at a Referred Primer-binding Site During Pre-diagnostic Tests for Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis

    The pre-diagnostic test for preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) of long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency was performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and direct sequencing for hydroxyacyl-Coenzyme A dehydrogenase/3-ketoacyl-Coenzyme A thiolase/enoyl-Coenzyme A hydratase (HADHA) gene. We obtained unexpected genotyping results of HADHA gene by allele drop-out in the analysis of patients' genomic DNA samples with a referred PCR primer set. Upon further analysis with a re-designed primer set, we found a novel single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) at the referred primer-binding site in the normal allele of HADHA gene (NT_022184, 5233296 a>t). We found that the frequency of this novel SNP was 0.064 in Korean population. Pre-diagnostic test using single lymphocytes and clinical PGD were successfully performed with the re-designed primer set. Nineteen embryos (95.0%) among 20 were successfully diagnosed to 5 homozygous mutated, 8 heterozygous carrier and 6 wild type. Among 6 normal embryos, well developed and selected 4 embryos were transferred into the mother's uterus, but a pregnancy was not achieved. We proposed that an unknown SNP at primer-binding sites would be a major cause of allele drop-out in the PGD for single gene disorder

    Acute, fatal postoperative myocardial infarction after laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a cardiac patient -A case report-

    This report presents the case of a 63-year-old man who had a myocardial infarction leading to coronary artery bypass graft 2 years earlier who subsequently underwent elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy. After an uneventful operation, the patient developed an acute postoperative myocardial infarction in the recovery room and died 19 days postoperatively. Anesthesiologists should be aware of the rare possibility of acute, fatal postoperative myocardial infarction and consider this complication when they perform the preoperative risk evaluation, anesthesia, and postoperative care for cardiac patients undergoing noncardiac surgery

    Favorable response to doxorubicin combination chemotherapy does not yield good clinical outcome in patients with metastatic breast cancer with triple-negative phenotype

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We analyzed the responses to first line treatment and clinical outcomes of metastatic breast cancer patients treated with palliative doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide (AC) according to molecular cancer subtype.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A retrospective analysis was performed for 110 metastatic breast cancer patients selected on the basis of palliative AC treatment and the availability of immunohistochemical data for estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2/neu) status.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the 110 patients analyzed, 71 (64.5%) were hormone receptor positive (HR+), 14 (12.7%) were HER2+, and 25 (22.7%) were triple negative (TN). There were no differences in age, stage at diagnosis, total number of cycles of palliative chemotherapy, incidence of visceral metastasis, and metastatic sites with the exception of liver among breast cancer subtypes. The overall response rates to AC were 55.9% for the HR+ subgroup, 42.9% for the HER2+ subgroup, and 56.5% for the TN subgroup. The progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with HER2+ and TN were significantly shorter than in the HR+ (median PFS, 9.1 <it>vs </it>8.1 <it>vs </it>11.5 months, respectively; p = 0.0002). The overall survival (OS) was 25.4 months in the TN subgroup and 27.3 months in HER2+ subgroup. The median OS for these two groups was significantly shorter than for patients in the HR+ subgroup (median, 38.5 months; 95% CI, 30.1-46.9 months; p < 0.0001).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The response to palliative AC chemotherapy did not differ among breast cancer subtypes. Despite chemosensitivity for palliative AC, the TN subtype has a shorter overall survival than non-TN subtypes. Innovative treatment strategies should be developed to slow the course of disease.</p

    Spatial and temporal variabilities of spring Asian dust events and their impacts on chlorophyll-a concentrations in the western North Pacific Ocean

Spatial analysis of spring Asian dust events from source regions to the western North Pacific, using long-term daily aerosol index data, revealed three different transport pathways supported by the westerly wind system: one passing across the northern East/Japan Sea (40Ā°Nā€“50Ā°N), a second moving over the entire East/Japan Sea (35Ā°Nā€“55Ā°N), and a third flowing predominantly over the Siberian continent (>50Ā°N). Our results indicate that strong spring Asian dust events can increase ocean primary productivity by more than 70% (>2-fold increase in chlorophyll-a concentrations) compared to weak/nondust conditions.
