Coexistence of bounded and unbounded geometry for area-preserving maps
The geometry of the period doubling Cantor sets of strongly dissipative
infinitely renormalizable H\'enon-like maps has been shown to be unbounded by
M. Lyubich, M. Martens and A. de Carvalho, although the measure of unbounded
"spots" in the Cantor set has been demonstrated to be zero.
We show that an even more extreme situation takes places for infinitely
renormalizable area-preserving H\'enon-like maps: bounded and unbounded
geometries coexist with both phenomena occuring on subsets of positive measure
in the Cantor sets
Public and Private Law in the Global Adjudication System: Three Questions to the Panelists
Temporal dynamics of semantic relations in word embeddings: an application to predicting armed conflict participants
This paper deals with using word embedding models to trace the temporal
dynamics of semantic relations between pairs of words. The set-up is similar to
the well-known analogies task, but expanded with a time dimension. To this end,
we apply incremental updating of the models with new training texts, including
incremental vocabulary expansion, coupled with learned transformation matrices
that let us map between members of the relation. The proposed approach is
evaluated on the task of predicting insurgent armed groups based on
geographical locations. The gold standard data for the time span 1994--2010 is
extracted from the UCDP Armed Conflicts dataset. The results show that the
method is feasible and outperforms the baselines, but also that important work
still remains to be done.Comment: to appear in EMNLP 2017 proceeding
Redefining part-of-speech classes with distributional semantic models
This paper studies how word embeddings trained on the British National Corpus
interact with part of speech boundaries. Our work targets the Universal PoS tag
set, which is currently actively being used for annotation of a range of
languages. We experiment with training classifiers for predicting PoS tags for
words based on their embeddings. The results show that the information about
PoS affiliation contained in the distributional vectors allows us to discover
groups of words with distributional patterns that differ from other words of
the same part of speech.
This data often reveals hidden inconsistencies of the annotation process or
guidelines. At the same time, it supports the notion of `soft' or `graded' part
of speech affiliations. Finally, we show that information about PoS is
distributed among dozens of vector components, not limited to only one or two
features
Farmer research and extension
In this brief, we learn that "combining technical innovations with collective action initiatives has been shown to lead to substantial farmer benefits. A number of farmer-led research and extension (FRE) approaches incorporate collective action for different purposes and at different stages in the innovation process. Collective action can be useful in sharing knowledge, setting priorities, and experimenting with, evaluating, and disseminating technologies." The authors describe various participatory research approaches such as farmer field schools (FFSs), local agriculture research committees (CIALs), farmer research groups (FRGs), and farmer innovation approaches (FIAs) from Text.Poverty alleviation ,Collective action ,
Molecular cloning and sequence analysis of the cDNA encoding the human acrosin-trypsin inhibitor (HUSI-II)
A complete cDNA clone encoding the human acrosin-trypsin inhibitor HUSI-II has been isolated from a cDNA library of human testis and completely sequenced. The cDNA of 594 bp contained an open reading frame of 252 base pairs, The deduced amino acid sequence comprised the complete amino acid sequence of HUSI-II[1] and a putative signal peptide. Northern blotting analysis revealed that HUSI-II is synthesized in testis, epididymis and seminal vesicle, but not in the prostate gland
Analysis of Participatory Research Projects in the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center
Through a survey of scientists from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in 2004, this study assessed the extent to which participatory methods had been used by the center, how they were perceived by the scientists, and how participatory research could be applied more effectively by CIMMYT and partners. Results for 19 CIMMYT projects suggest among other things that participatory approaches at the center were largely “functional”—that is, aimed at improving the efficiency and relevance of research—and had in fact added value to the research efforts. The authors suggest that CIMMYT should (1) create a more conducive environment for scientists to share experiences on such approaches and (2) better document their impacts on farmers’ livelihoods and well-being.Economic analysis, Research projects, Research methods, Quantitative analysis, Surveys, Statistics, Evaluation, Scientists, Research institutions, Mexico., Crop Production/Industries, Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies, E10, A50,
