    Approaches to flame resistant polymeric materials

    Four research and development areas are considered for further exploration in the quest of more flame-resistant polymeric materials. It is suggested that improvements in phenolphthalein polycarbonate processability may be gained through linear free energy relationship correlations. Looped functionality in the backbone of a polymer leads to both improved thermal resistance and increased solubility. The guidelines used in the pyrolytic carbon production constitute a good starting point for the development of improved flame-resistant materials. Numerous organic reactions requiring high temperatures and the techniques of protected functionality and latent functionality constitute the third area for exploration. Finally, some well-known organic reactions are suggested for the formation of polymers that were not made before

    For Those in Peril on the Sea : The motivations of nineteenth century European artists to create shipwreck paintings

    This thesis will be an examination of the motivations of nineteenth century European artists to create paintings portraying shipwrecks. I have identified four main motivations, Nature over Man, Man over Nature, Political Position, and Personal Upheaval, and will analyze various works in order to view how each motivation relates to the other. Each work analyzed falls into one or more of these categories and by studying them side by side I hope to gain a better understanding of these works unique place in art history. Additionally I will be taking a look at how depictions of shipwrecks were politicized by the public after their completion even if the artist likely had no intention of their work being political, as well as examining a work that very nearly falls into all four motivational categories simultaneously. In the end, I aim to show that works in this unique subcategory of art hold just as much meaning and importance as those in other, more studied artistic categories

    Extended Fourier analysis of signals

    This summary of the doctoral thesis is created to emphasize the close connection of the proposed spectral analysis method with the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), the most extensively studied and frequently used approach in the history of signal processing. It is shown that in a typical application case, where uniform data readings are transformed to the same number of uniformly spaced frequencies, the results of the classical DFT and proposed approach coincide. The difference in performance appears when the length of the DFT is selected to be greater than the length of the data. The DFT solves the unknown data problem by padding readings with zeros up to the length of the DFT, while the proposed Extended DFT (EDFT) deals with this situation in a different way, it uses the Fourier integral transform as a target and optimizes the transform basis in the extended frequency range without putting such restrictions on the time domain. Consequently, the Inverse DFT (IDFT) applied to the result of EDFT returns not only known readings, but also the extrapolated data, where classical DFT is able to give back just zeros, and higher resolution are achieved at frequencies where the data has been successfully extended. It has been demonstrated that EDFT able to process data with missing readings or gaps inside or even nonuniformly distributed data. Thus, EDFT significantly extends the usability of the DFT-based methods, where previously these approaches have been considered as not applicable. The EDFT founds the solution in an iterative way and requires repeated calculations to get the adaptive basis, and this makes it numerical complexity much higher compared to DFT. This disadvantage was a serious problem in the 1990s, when the method has been proposed. Fortunately, since then the power of computers has increased so much that nowadays EDFT application could be considered as a real alternative.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figure

    Various forms of cellular injury, whether induced by immune effector cells, aberrant metabolic processes, chemotherapeutic drugs or temperature shifts, result in common morphological changes consisting of the formation and shedding of membrane vesicles from the injured cell surfaces, i.e., apoptosis. This dynamic cell surface membrane behavior appears to be dependent on the disruption of cytoplasmic microtubules. Concomitant with the altered cell surface morphology, certain physiological and biochemical events have been found to be associated with cell injury. These include changes in membrane permeability, elevated oxygen consumption rates and nuclear DNA fragmentation. However, it remains to be experimentally established which of these biological changes defines a state of irreparable cell injury and/or programmed cell death (PCD). Selective cell injury and death is the goal of many therapeutic modalities aimed at the destruction of malignant cells. On the other hand, prevention of cell injury is desirable in autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, thyroiditis, insulin dependent diabetes and many others. Injury to the vascular endothelium may play a role not only in thrombosis, atherosclerosis and hypertension, but may also provide the avenues for the metastasis of malignant cells. The objective of the present review is to compare and evaluate the cell injury process induced by effector lymphocytes with that caused by low temperature. The latter mimics most, if not all, the currently known criteria of immune effector cell mediated PCD of target tumor cells
