    Neofusicoccum parvum causes stem canker of thornless blackberry in Italy

    Important damage caused by the fungus Neofusicoccum parvum in thornless blackberry in southern Italy is reported for the first time. The most noticeable symptoms were stem cankers and yellowing of the foliage. Cankers on stems were initially elongated, and infected tissue was darkly pigmented. The fungus was identified based on morphological characteristics and by sequencing the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region and part of the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF1-a) gene. Pathogenicity tests confirmed that N. parvum caused the disease on blackberry, inducing symptoms similar to those occurring under natural conditions. This is potentially a serious disease of blackberry in southern Italy, where cultivation is expanding

    Memory effects in annealed hybrid gold nanoparticles/block copolymer bilayers

    We report on the use of the self-organization process of sputtered gold nanoparticles on a self-assembled block copolymer film deposited by horizontal precipitation Langmuir-Blodgett (HP-LB) method. The morphology and the phase-separation of a film of poly-n-butylacrylate-block-polyacrylic acid (PnBuA-b-PAA) were studied at the nanometric scale by using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). The templating capability of the PnBuA-b-PAA phase-separated film was studied by sputtering gold nanoparticles (NPs), forming a film of nanometric thickness. The effect of the polymer chain mobility onto the organization of gold nanoparticle layer was assessed by heating the obtained hybrid PnBuA-b-PAA/Au NPs bilayer at T >Tg. The nanoparticles' distribution onto the different copolymer domains was found strongly affected by the annealing treatment, showing a peculiar memory effect, which modifies the AFM phase response of the Au NPs layer onto the polar domains, without affecting their surfacial composition. The effect is discussed in terms of the peculiar morphological features induced by enhanced mobility of polymer chains on the Au NPs layer

    The recent development of 3D Concrete Printing (3DPC) has introduced new possibilities for the construction of more efficient and sustainable buildings. However, despite the fact that some building prototypes have been already realized in recent years, only few specific studies have been directed to the study of structural behaviour of such elements. Accordingly, this paper deals with the experimental investigation of the role of hardened state properties of concrete on the structural response of 3DPC walls. Two full-scale walls, one without reinforcement and the other with vertical steel bars, have been printed and are going to be tested at the University of Brescia.     Evaluation of Technical Solutions to Improve Transient Stability in Power Systems with Wind Power Generation

    Reliability and safety must be carefully considered in today’s power systems, which are rapidly evolving toward ever higher penetration of renewable, inverter-based generation units. Power systems are constantly stressed by active power disturbances, which can be exacerbated by wind and solar systems that are subject to rapid fluctuations in primary energy. In this framework, a comparative technical analysis of solutions to improve transient stability, both rotor angle stability and frequency stability, is carried out. These solutions can be adopted by the transmission system operator (e.g., an additional parallel transmission line), by the generation companies (e.g., a fast excitation system), or by both, such as SVC (static VAR compensator) and STATCOM (static synchronous compensator). Sensitivity analyses were carried out to assess the impact of the location of the wind turbines in the buses of the grid on their rated power and level of production. On the basis of these analyses, the worst-case fault was considered, and the critical fault recovery time was determined as an engineering parameter to compare the different solutions. For the numerical analysis, a modified IEEE 9-bus system was considered, and the PowerWorld software tool was used. Rotor angle and frequency stability analyses were performed

    Aloe vera extract as a promising treatment for the quality maintenance of minimally-processed table grapes

    The effect of an edible film obtained from a commercial Aloe vera extract, on the quality maintenance of minimally processed grapes belonging to three different cultivars (Sugar One, Victoria and Black Magic) was evaluated by enzymatic (PPO, PME, ÎČ-GAL), physicochemical (pH, acidity, °Brix), and sensorial methods. All the analyzed parameters were measured in extracts obtained from minimally processed grapes packaged in ordinary atmosphere and stored at 4 °C for 15 days. Samples dipped into Aloe vera showed significant differences (p≀0.05) compared to untreated ones. The determination of such parameters and the evaluation of consumer acceptability were helpful to determine the effectiveness of the post-harvest treatment with Aloe vera for a storage period of 15 days

    Power systems are rapidly evolving to face the increasing penetration of renewable inverter-based generation units and to improve their reliability and safety. A power system is constantly exposed to sudden changes or disturbances that may affect its stability. In this paper, a comparative analysis of solutions to improve transient stability, both rotor angle and frequency stability, is performed. These solutions are SVC, STATCOM, a fast excitation system, and an additional parallel transmission line. Sensitivity analyses were performed to evaluate the effects of the location of the three-phase fault line and the most effective SVC or STATCOM installation bus. Based on these analyses, the worst-case fault is considered, and the critical fault clearing time is determined as an engineering parameter for comparing the different solutions. For the numerical analysis, the IEEE 9 bus system is considered, and the PowerWorld software tool is used. Rotor angle and frequency stability analyses were performed. Moreover, specifically for SVC and STATCOM, the effects of different values of short-circuit ratios were considered in the context of rotor angle stability analysis. As part of the frequency stability analysis, the use of the remuneration for load shedding service in Italy was considered to perform an economic analysis for SVC and STATCOM
