In the extended winters from December 2017 to April 2021, numerous high-impact storms affected the Iberian Peninsula (IP) with heavy precipitation and/or strong winds. Here, we provide a comprehensive assessment of these events, synoptic conditions, large-scale dynamics associated with storms, and a climatological analysis to improve public awareness and natural disaster prevention. Variability analysis presents that their maximum intensity ranges from 955 hPa to 985 hPa, a two-to-four-day lifetime, and the highest frequency (eight events) occurred in January. At the instant of maximum intensity, anomalies presented low MSLP values (−21.6 hPa), high values of water vapor (327.6 kg m−1s−1) and wind speed at 250 hPa (29.6 m s−1), high values of θe at 850 hPa (19.1 °C), SST (−1 °C), and QE (−150 W m−2), near Iberia. The values obtained during the storm impact days exceeded the 98th percentile values in a high percentage of days for daily accumulated precipitation (34%), instantaneous wind gusts (46%), wind speed at 10 m (47%), and concurrent events of wind/instantaneous wind gusts and precipitation (26% and 29%, respectively). These results allow us to characterize their meteorological impacts on the IP, namely those caused by heavy precipitation and wind.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia | Ref. Revisiting the outstanding flooding episode of November 1967 in the greater metropolitan Lisbon area

The deadliest storm affecting Portugal since, at least, the early 19th century, took place on the 25 and 26 November 1967 causing more than 500 fatalities. Here we provide a comprehensive multi-disciplinary assessment of this episode, including the main socio-economic impacts, particularly the numbers and location of victims (dead, injured, homeless and evacuated). Based on the sub-daily time series of a representative station, and its Intensity-Duration-Frequency curves, we have found that the exceptionality of this rainfall event is particularly linked to rainfall intensities ranging in duration from 4 to 9 hours compatible with return periods of 100-years or more. This range of time scale is similar to the estimated concentration time values of the hydrographic basins affected by the flash flood event. Most victims were sleeping or were caught by surprise at home in the small river catchments within the greater metropolitan Lisbon area. The majority of people who died or who were severely affected by the flood lived in degraded housing conditions often raised in a clandestine way, occupying flood plains near the stream beds. This level of destruction observed at the time is in stark contrast to what was observed in subsequent episodes of similar amplitude. In particular, since 1967 the Lisbon area, was struck by two comparable intense precipitation events in 1983 and 2008 but generating considerably fewer deaths and evacuated people.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Disruption risk analysis of the overhead power lines in Portugal

    Get PDF
Financiado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade de Vigo/CISUGThe growing increase in frequency and intensity of extreme weather events (EWEs) has a wide impact on energy systems and consumers, as energy transmission infrastructures - overhead power lines (OPL). The main objective of this work is to present the methodology of risk analysis of the EWEs on OPL in Portugal. The level of risk associated with each of the identified events is classified according to the probability of occurrence and consequences, in a risk matrix, and through the cause-and-effect analysis. It is concluded that, in Portugal, the extreme wind – corresponding to level 11 of the Beaufort Wind Force Scale, that is, values equal to or higher than 105.1 km h- 1 (29.22 m s-1) – is the main factor that provoked the OPL disruption, between 28% and 40% of analyzed events associated with windstorms. Considering the occurrence of compound events - wind and rain - the probability of damage to OPL is between 21% and 30%; for wind and ice, it is 3%–5%. EWEs represent a serious risk for electrical systems, and it is necessary to develop effective solutions to minimize the associated impacts, such as the modification and upgrade of the current design and engineering standards, and electrical network monitoring.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia | Ref. Cerâmica islâmica em Portugal: 150 anos

    Get PDF

The modest evolution of the research until the 1980s was replaced by the development of the studies on this subject, pressed forward by the fundamental projects of Mértola and Silves. In the 1990s, this development was intensified and, in the last decade, the number, diversity and geographical dispersion of studies and projects was remarkable, particularly those originated from urban archaeology. The CIGA project (Cerâmica Islâmica do Ġarb al-Andalus), started in 2008, is part of this dynamics, promoting the systematization, the discussion and the diffusion of all the information and presenting here a composite paper about the studies on Islamic ceramics in Portugal, its main tendencies, problems, virtues and future perspectives

Created in 1893, and with over 125 years of history and accomplishments, the FC Porto is one of the world’s most spoken and most successful sports clubs. Due to its path of victories, trophies, prizes, and its growing importance and growth at national and international level, a study was developed that relates Sports Tourism in the Oporto, and that analyses, in particular, the influence of the club in the city of Oporto, with the reference of two unavoidable equipments of the city, the Dragão Stadium and the FC Porto Museum. The city of Oporto has also been registering a remarkable growth path, as a tourist destination, besides the classification of its historical centre, considered by UNESCO as a World Heritage. It has carried out a relevant work, since 2001, as the European Capital of Culture, which ensured, partly, the award of Best European Destination in 2012, 2014 and 2017. The DMOs, either regional and municipal have developed a partnership path with local institutions and entities, being this decisive for the maintenance of the competitiveness as a tourist destination. The overall scope of this study is to perceive the role of football, in particular, the FC Porto football club, in Oporto as a tourism destination. To respond to the research objectives, a qualitative methodology was used, where semi-structured interviews were applied to four personalities and that allowed the collection of descriptive data in the language of the interviewees themselves, about the topic of Sports Tourism and the destination of Oporto. This study intends to be an important contribution to the scientific literature in the field of sports tourism, namely in the relationship between the FC Porto football club and Oporto tourism destination, for the definition of future strategies bearing in mind collaboration and strengthening partnerships in a competitive perspective for both. The data gathered confirm that the Oporto brand influences the potential of Oporto city as a sports tourism destination, and the importance and perception of FC Porto football club in Oporto as a destination, influence the average stay and with whom tourists travel, as well as the main activities carried out during the trip.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
