The chemical mechanisms of plant-soil interactions

    Get PDF
The interaction between plants and soils is too often oversimplified for its importance to life on earth. The chemical complexity of this interaction is enormous, but many soil scientists, ecologists, and biogeochemists reduce it to single compounds. This dissertation looks to explore the complexity of the interface of plant roots and soils, termed the rhizosphere, in an effort to better understand the chemical forces that shape terrestrial ecosystems. In two chapters I explore how small genetic differences in plants can lead to vast differences in surrounding soil enzymes and thousands of other metabolites. I show that the trait variation within a plant species can alter pedogenesis (The formation of soils) that may have feedbacks on future generations of plants. In the third chapter I explicitly explore this feedback by examining how plant chemical phenotypes change when exposed to live soils which have been conditioned by populations of a plant with unique phenotypes. As soil metabolomics is a new field, I used my final chapter as a review of the current methods of data analysis with the hope that future soil scientists will join me in exploring the chemical complexity of the soil instead of ignoring it

The Diagnostic Manual and Mental Disorder, Fourth Edition (2000). Abstract Transgender refers to the widest imaginable range of gender-variant practices and identities. Julie Anne Peters’ Luna presents the story of transgender teen through the lens of a straight. This literature work has many conflicts that transgender people experienced. It is raised three major problems, (1) How is transgender reflected in Julie Anne Peters’ Luna, (2) What are the causes of becoming transgender in Julie Anne Peters’ Luna, and (3) What are the impacts of being transgender in Julie Anne Peters’ Luna. The data of the study is taken from the novel as main source and intensive reading to the next step of analysis. The used concept to reveal first statement of problem is diagnostic criteria for gender identity disorder cited from The Diagnostic Manual and Mental Disorder, Fourth Edition (2000). To answer the second and the third problems, the study used theory of transgender by Susan Stryker. Moreover, the study used library research, analysis, and description. Library research is used to college data needed. An analysis is used to analyze the collected data based on the theory. Description is used to describe the result of analysis. The result of the analysis of transgender reflection in Luna completing the diagnostic criteria for gender identity disorder which contains four disturbances. The analysis of causes becoming transgender in Luna finds out that Liam O’Neill is an example of XYY variation of chromosomes, other causes are culture and brain structure. The analysis of impacts being transgender in Luna finds out the positive and negative impacts. Though Liam O’Neill is an object of abusing and getting anxiety disorder, he concerns with Luna and reaches his goal in life, that is being girl inside and outside. Keywords: Transgender, Gender Identity Disorder, Gender

Faulkner in Hollywood: A Study of His Career as a Scenarist

This study explores a significant aspect of William Faulkner\u27s life and work: his Hollywood career. For Faulkner, Hollywood served as a remunerative avocation. It provided him with a financial security which his literary public at that time did not. The money he earned as a scenarist seems to have enabled him to evade the economic necessity of writing for a commercial market, permitting him to write for himself. But Faulkner also gave for what he got. He gave his time and creative energy, the results of which--his Hollywood writings-- reveal the mind of the artist at work. Faulkner the novelist became Faulkner the scenarist, using familiar tools to create in an alien medium. And quite possibly, Hollywood influenced Faulkner the novelist. Although Faulkner did not, like Budd Schulberg, Liam O\u27Flaherty, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nathaniel West, and Christopher Isherwood, write a novel about Hollywood, it would be presumptuous to assume that he escaped his six-year association with Hollywood unaffected

Troubled Trinity: Love, Religion and Patriotism in Liam O\u27Flaherty\u27s First Novel, \u3cem\u3eThy neighbour\u27s wife\u3c/em\u3e.

The focus of this research is a detailed analysis of Liam O\u27Flaherty\u27s first published novel, Thy Neighbour\u27s Wife, as an underlying autobiographical portrait depicted in the main character, Fr. Hugh McMahon. Although never touted as an autobiography, this study shows O\u27Flaherty drew upon his early cultural, historical, religious, and political influences in creating his main character. Primary and secondary sources, an ethnographic trip to Ireland, and a content analysis of the novel determined the findings. The fictional McMahon faced difficult personal choices, subsequently coming to terms with past decisions. McMahon\u27s foibles reflect O\u27Flaherty\u27s early years. O\u27Flaherty wrote two acclaimed autobiographies, Shame the Devil and Two Years, during his later literary career. This analysis establishes that O\u27Flaherty used his main character in his first novel, Thy Neighbour\u27s Wife, as a means of conveying in fictional form his own personal struggles, thus establishing this novel as a de facto autobiography

Smart Device Profiling for Smart SCADA

SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems are computer systems used for monitoring and controlling industrial processes such as power plants and power grid systems, water, gas and oil distribution systems, production systems for food, cars and other products. We propose a new approach for regulating and detecting malicious behaviour of network devices in SCADA systems. Our approach consists of building proles that describe normal communication between pairs of devices in the network. Each prole describes four aspects of network communication: device ngerprint, connectivity pattern, pseudo-protocol pattern and packet content. We validate our approach using network trac from two real-life SCADA installations

The Low-Latitude Ionosphere/Thermosphere Enhancements in Density (LLITED) Mission

The Low-Latitude Ionosphere/Thermosphere Enhancements in Density (LLITED) CubeSat mission is a NASA funded HTIDs project. It is a 3-year grant with two 1.5U CubeSats with an estimated delivery in the spring of 2020 and a 1- year on-orbit mission life. Each CubeSat will host a miniature ionization gauge space instrument (MIGSI), planar ion probe (PIP), and GPS radio occultation sensor (CTECS-A). The mission is to provide both ionosphere and thermosphere measurements related to the Equatorial Ionization Anomaly (EIA) and the Equatorial Temperature and Wind Anomaly (ETWA). The EIA and ETWA are two of the dominant ionosphere/thermosphere interactions on the low-latitude duskside. While the EIA has been extensively studied both observationally and with modeling, the ETWA is less well known since observations are infrequent due to a lack of suitably instrumented spacecraft (s/c) at appropriate altitudes. LLITED will, for the first time, provide coincident high-resolution measurements of the duskside ionosphere/thermosphere at lower altitudes that will characterize and improve our understanding of the ETWA, provide insight into the coupling physics between the ETWA and EIA, and increase our knowledge of the duskside dynamics that may influence space weather. The following paper reviews the science mission and concepts and then provides the current status of the LLITED hardware

Experimental evidence of guided resonances in photonic crystals with aperiodically-ordered supercells

We report on the first experimental evidence of guided resonances (GRs) in photonic crystal slabs based on aperiodically-ordered supercells. Using the Ammann-Beenker (quasiperiodic, 8-fold symmetric) tiling geometry, we present our study on the fabrication, experimental characterization, and full-wave numerical simulation of two representative structures (with different filling parameters) operating at near-infrared wavelengths (1300-1600 nm). Our results show a fairly good agreement between measurements and numerical predictions, and pave the way for the development of new strategies (based, e.g., on the lattice symmetry breaking) for GR engineering.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures (minor revisions
