    Revisión del género Rhodymenia (RHODOPHYTA) de la Costa Central del Perú mediante análisis morfológico y código de barras de ADN

Departamento Académico de BiologíaEl desarrollo de técnicas moleculares como complemento de los estudios taxonómicos en algas ha permitido mejorar la clasificación de las especies y nuestro entendimiento de las relaciones filogenéticas entre los diferentes grupos de algas. Estudios taxonómicos y filogenéticos, utilizando secuencias código de barras de ADN de Rhodymenia (Rhodymeniaceae) de diferentes partes del mundo, como Australia, Canadá, Estados Unidos, Japón, Sudáfrica, Chile y Perú han revelado la presencia de especies crípticas en el género. Material morfológicamente asignado al género Rhodymenia, colectado en la costa central del Perú, fue analizado morfológica y molecularmente, generándose 25 secuencias del marcador cloroplastidial rbcL. La aplicación de análisis filogenéticos, modelos de delimitación de especies y el análisis morfológico de muestras de herbarios nacionales e internacionales, permitió diferenciar cinco especies para la costa central peruana. Tres de ellas atribuidas a las especies anteriormente registradas R. skottsbergii, R. flabellifolia y R. corallina, incluyendo en la última a los especímenes morfológicamente identificados como R. howeana y R. multidigitata. También se diferenciaron dos especies referidas en este manuscrito como R. corallina 2 y como Rhodymenia sp., esta última incluye los especímenes inicialmente identificados como R. californica. Análisis morfológicos y moleculares más profundos, complementados con el uso de otros marcadores moleculares, son necesarios para confirmar la identificación de estas especies.The development of molecular techniques as a complement of taxonomic studies in algae, has allowed to improve species classification and our understanding of phylogenetic relationships within the different groups of algae. Taxonomic and phylogenetic studies using DNA barcode secquences in Rhodymenia (Rhodymeniaceae) from different places around the world, as Australia, Canada, USA, Japan, South Africa, Chile and Perú, they have revealed the variety of cryptic species in the genus. Material morphologically assigned to Rhodymenia genus, which has been collected in the central coast of Peru, it was morphologically and molecularly analized, for what it has been generated 25 rbcL secuences. The use of phylogenetic analysis, application of species delimitation models, and the morphological analysis of national and international herbariums samples, allowed to differentiate five species in the Peruvian central coast. Three of them were attributed to the previous recognized species R. skottsbergii, R. flabellifolia and R. corallina, in the last one were included sequences of samples morphologically identified as R. howeana and R. multidigitata. Two other species were also identified in this manuscript as R. corallina 2 and as Rhodymenia sp., the last one includes the specimens initially identified as R. californica. Deeper morphological and molecular analyzes, complementing the use of other molecular markers, are necessary to confirm the identification of these species

    Better drug use in advanced disease:An international Delphi study

    Patients with a limited life expectancy use many medications, some of which may be questionable. Objectives To identify possible solutions for difficulties concerning medication management and formulate recommendations to improve medication management at the end of life. Methods A two-round Delphi study with experts in the field of medication management and end-of-life care (based on ranking in the citation index in Web of Science and relevant publications). We developed a questionnaire with 58 possible solutions for problems regarding medication management at the end of life that were identified in previously performed studies. Results A total of 42 experts from 13 countries participated. Response rate in the first round was 93%, mean agreement between experts for all solutions was 87 % (range 62%-100%); additional suggestions were given by 51%. The response rate in the second round was 74%. Awareness, education and timely communication about medication management came forward as top priorities for guidelines. In addition, solutions considered crucial by many of the experts were development of a list of inappropriate medications at the end of life and incorporation of recommendations for end-of-life medication management in disease-specific guidelines. Conclusions In this international Delphi study, experts reached a high level of consensus on recommendations to improve medication management in end-of-life care. These findings may contribute to the development of clinical practice guidelines for medication management in end-of-life care.</p

    Thermo-responsive PNIPAm nanopillars displaying amplified responsiveness through the incorporation of nanoparticles

    The possibility of combining more than one stimulus-responsive property into a single material holds interesting potential for the creation of adaptive devices to be used in diverse fields such as drug delivery, nanomedicine and tissue engineering. This paper describes a novel material based on thermo-responsive PNIPAm nanopillars with amplified surface properties through the incorporation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles into the nanopillars, prepared via surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization in anodized aluminum oxide templates, sharply increased their stiffness and hydrophobicity when increasing the temperature above the volume phase transition temperature. Furthermore, their magnetic response turned out to be proportional to the amount of the incorporated nanoparticles. The possibility of sharply increasing the stiffness with a temperature variation close to the human body temperature paves the way to the application of these substrates as "smart" scaffolds for cell culture. Additionally, the presence of superparamagnetic nanoparticles in the nanopillars offers the possibility of using these nanostructured systems for magnetic hyperthermia.Fil: Giussi, Juan Martín.     Identification of WRKY transcription factors associated with leaf and corolla senescence in Petunia hybrida

    Several families of transcription factors (TFs) control the progression of senescence. Many key TFs belonging to the WRKY family have been described to play crucial roles in the regulation of leaf senescence, mainly in Arabidopsis. However, little is known about senescence-associated WRKY members in floricultural species. Delay of senescence in leaves and petals of Petunia hybrida, a worldwide ornamental crop are highly appreciated traits. In this work, starting from 28 differentially expressed WRKY genes of Arabidopsis during the progression of leaf senescence, we identified the orthologous in P. hybrida and explored the expression profiles of 20 PhWRKY genes during the progression of natural (age-related) leaf and corolla senescence as well as in the corollas of flowers undergoing pollination-induced senescence. Simultaneous visualization showed consistent and similar expression profiles of PhWRKYs during natural leaf and corolla senescence, although weak expression changes were observed during pollination-induced senescence. Comparable expression trends between PhWRKYs and the corresponding genes of Arabidopsis were observed during leaf senescence, although more divergences were found in petals of pollinated petunia flowers. Integration of expression data with phylogenetics, conserved motif and cis-regulatory element analyses were used to establish a list of solid candidates that could regulate more than one senescence process. Our results suggest that several members of the WRKY family of TFs are tightly linked to the regulation of senescence in P. hybrida.Fil: Astigueta, Francisco Horacio.     Severe Hypoalbuminemia at Day 90 Predicts Worse Nonrelapse Mortality and Overall Survival after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Acute Myelogenous Leukemia and Myelodysplastic Syndrome

    Because patients who undergo allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) remain in the vicinity of the transplant center for approximately 90 days posttransplantation, identifying prognostic factors to determine those at immediate higher risk of mortality is essential. A normal serum albumin level generally denotes healthiness. We evaluated the prognostic significance of day 90 hypoalbuminemia (and other clinical, pharmacologic, and laboratory variables) in 163 patients, median age 48 years (range, 19-69 years), who underwent allo-HCT for acute myelogenous leukemia (n = 124) or myelodysplastic syndrome (n = 39). Day 90 hypoalbuminemia (serum albumin <3.0 g/dL) was associated with worse nonrelapse mortality (NRM) and poor overall survival (OS). The estimated 1- and 2-year cumulative incidence rates of NRM were 48% and 52%, respectively, and the corresponding OS rates were 7% and 3%. Serum albumin level <3.0 g/dL and Karnofsky score <80 at day 90 were strong independent predictors of worse NRM and OS in multivariate analysis. These results support day 90 hypoalbuminemia as an adverse prognostic marker for NRM and OS after allo-HCT for acute myelogenous leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome
