    Analysis of scale effects in peer-to-peer networks

    In this paper, we study both positive and negative scale effects on the operations of peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing networks and propose the optimal sizing (number of peers) and grouping (number of directory intermediary) decisions. Using analytical models and simulation, we evaluate various performance metrics to investigate the characteristics of a P2P network. Our results show that increasing network scale has a positive effect on the expected content availability and transmission cost, but a negative effect on the expected provision and search costs. We propose an explicit expression for the overall utility of a content sharing P2P community that incorporates tradeoffs among all of the performance measures. This utility function is maximized numerically to obtain the optimal network size (or scale). We also investigate the impact of various P2P network parameters on the performance measures as well as optimal scaling decisions. Furthermore, we extend the model to examine the grouping decision in networks with symmetric interconnection structures and compare the performance between random- and location-based grouping policies. © 2008 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Study of psi(2S) decays to X J/psi

    Using J/psi -> mu^+ mu^- decays from a sample of approximately 4 million psi(2S) events collected with the BESI detector, the branching fractions of psi(2S) -> eta J/psi, pi^0 pi^0 J/psi, and anything J/psi normalized to that of psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi are measured. The results are B(psi(2S) -> eta J/psi)/B(psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi) = 0.098 \pm 0.005 \pm 0.010, B(psi(2S) -> pi^0 pi^0 J/psi)/B(psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi) = 0.570 \pm 0.009 \pm 0.026, and B(psi(2S) -> anything J/psi)/B(psi(2S) -> pi^+ pi^- J/psi) = 1.867 \pm 0.026 \pm 0.055.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure

    Integrated Modeling System for Water Resources Management of Tarim River Basin

    An integrated modeling system has been developed for water resources management of the Tarim River Basin, China. The system coupled remote sensing (RS)/geography information system (GIS) technique with distributed hydrological model to simulate the rainfall runoff, snow melting, and evapotranspiration process of the hydrological cycle. A case study was carried out in the Kaidu watershed. RS/GIS technique was used for effectively accessing, processing, and managing spatial data, such as land use, vegetative cover, soil, topography, precipitation, and evapotranspiration. The model was calibrated and validated against observed discharge for two hydrological stations during the period 1998-2001, and it generally performed well for Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient, water balance coefficient, and correlation coefficient. The Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient was approximately over 0.7 and the water balance error was lower than +/- 5%, indicating reasonable prediction accuracy. A comparison between the conventional and RS-based hydrological models was conducted. Although the two-models exhibit similar performances on runoff and snow melt simulation, the RS-based hydrological model had better performance in the simulation of actual evapotranspiration.     CDK5RAP3 is a novel repressor of p14ARF in hepatocellular carcinoma cells

    CDK5 regulatory subunit associated protein 3 (CDK5RAP3) is a novel activator of PAK4 and processes important pro-metastatic function in hepatocarcinogenesis. However, it remains unclear if there are other mechanisms by which CDK5RAP3 promotes HCC metastasis. Here, we showed that in CDK5RAP3 stable knockdown SMMC-7721 HCC cells, p14(ARF) tumor suppressor was upregulated at protein and mRNA levels, and ectopic expression of CDK5RAP3 was found to repress the transcription of p14(ARF). Using chromatin immunoprecipitation assay, we demonstrated that CDK5RAP3 bound to p14(ARF) promoter in vivo. Furthermore, knockdown of p14(ARF) in CDK5RAP3 stable knockdown HCC cells reversed the suppression of HCC cell invasiveness mediated by knockdown of CDK5RAP3. Taken together, our findings provide the new evidence that overexpression of CDK5RAP3 promotes HCC metastasis via downregulation of p14(ARF).published_or_final_versio

    Inexact fuzzy-stochastic constraint-softened programming - A case study for waste management

    In this study, an inexact fuzzy-stochastic constraint-softened programming method is developed for municipal solid waste (MSW) management under uncertainty, The developed method can deal with multiple uncertainties presented in terms of fuzzy sets, interval values and random variables. Moreover, a number of violation levels for the system constraints are allowed. This is realized through introduction of violation variables to soften system constraints, such that the model's decision space can be expanded under demanding conditions. This can help generate a range of decision alternatives under various conditions, allowing in-depth analyses of tradeoffs among economic objective, satisfaction degree, and constraint-violation risk. The developed method is applied to a case study of planning a MSW management system. The uncertain and dynamic information can be incorporated within a multi-layer scenario tree; revised decisions are permitted in each time period based on the realized values of uncertain events. Solutions associated with different satisfaction degree levels have been generated, corresponding to different constraint-violation risks. They are useful for supporting decisions of waste flow allocation and system-capacity expansion within a multistage context. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
