    Detection of eight different tospovirus species by a monoclonal antibody against the common epitope of NSs protein

    Rabbit antisera against the nucleocapsid protein (NP) have been commonly used for detection of tospoviruses and classification into serogroups or serotypes. Mouse monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) with high specificity to the NPs have also been widely used to identify tospovirus species. Recently, a serogroup-specific MAb against the NSs protein of Watermelon silver mottle virus (WSMoV) was produced by our laboratory to react with five members of WSMoV serogroup, i.e., WSMoV, Capsicum chlorosis virus (CaCV), Calla lily chlorotic spot virus (CCSV), Peanut bud necrosis virus (PBNV) and Watermelon bud necrosis virus (WBNV). The epitope recognized by the NSs MAb was determined and the comparison with the reported sequences of tospoviral NSs proteins revealed that the epitope is highly conserved at the N-terminal region of NSs proteins among members of WSMoV and Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV) serogroups, and Melon yellow spot virus (MYSV) serotype. When the NSs MAb was further used to react with the crude antigens of MYSV serotype, IYSV and Tomato yellow ring virus (TYRV) of IYSV serogroup, strong serological reactions, both in ELISA and western blotting, were observed. Thus, our results indicated that the NSs MAb is a useful and convenient tool for detection of the eight tospovirus species.     Subphonemic Sensitivity in Low Literacy Adults

    The link between phonological abilities and reading skills has been well-established in both typical and atypical language development. However, the nature of the phonological deficits in poor readers remains a debated topic. While poor readers have been mostly assumed to have underspecified or “fuzzy” phonological representations (Tallal et al., 1998), the opposite alternative, over-specified phonological representations, has also been hypothesized (Serniclaes, 2006). To examine the two phonological hypotheses, the current study used the eye-tracking paradigm in the study of Dahan et al. (2001) to investigate individuals’ sensitivity to subphonemic information in young adults with a wide range of reading abilities. Our findings suggested a trend of higher sensitivity to subphonemic information in lower-ability readers, consistent with the over-specification hypothesis. In addition, our sample with a lower range of socio-economic status highlighted the need to take environmental factors into consideration for theoretical and practical purposes in reading acquisition

    Noise reduction of plenum windows on the façade of a high-rise residential building next to heavy road traffic

    Extensive traffic noise transmission loss measurements were carried out inside selected residential units of a standalone 32-storey housing block located next to a very busy and noisy main trunk road in the present study. A total of 35 units, which were all equipped with plenum windows, was surveyed. These plenum windows are intended to help reduce noise exposure of the residents and at the same time allow for a reasonable level of natural ventilation. The results show that the traffic noise transmission losses of the unit façades installed with the plenum windows adopted in this housing block vary between 10.6 and 13.0 dBA and are only weakly dependent on elevation from the trunk road. The results also validate in-situ the prediction model established previously by the authors using laboratory and site mockup data. Generalized models for both empirical and experimental estimation of the traffic noise transmission loss across a residential flat unit façade installed with multiple plenum windows are developed. The differences between their estimations are well within engineering tolerance

Shoe age maybe an important factor in running injuries. One prospective study showed that running injury was associated with shoe age (Taunton et al., 2003). In recent years, different types of foam materials have been developed for running shoe midsoles. Two common types of foam materials, Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) and Polyurethane (PU), are now widely used in running shoe midsoles.     Experimental study of the flow velocity reduction behind fishing net

    A series of physical model experiments is conducted to investigate the flow velocity reduction downstream from fishing net in current. The plane net is fixed on a steel frame, which is 0.3 m in width and 0.3 m in height, and positioned in the center of the flume normal to the flow direction. In the experiments, the acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) is applied to measure the flow velocity behind the plane net. This paper presents the flow velocity reduction behind the plane net(s) with different solidity, spacing distances between two plane nets and plane net numbers. According to the experimental data, there exists an obvious flow velocity reduction downstream from the\ud plane net and the flow velocity reduction increases with increasing net solidity. For two plane nets with different spacing distances, the average value of flow velocity reduction factor is 0.90 between and 0.83 downstream the two plane nets. As the net number increases from 1 to 4, the minimum flow velocity reduction factor downstream from the\ud plane nets decreases from 0.90 to 0.68. It is found that there is a close relationship between the flow velocity reduction and the above parameters of the plane net. These results should help improve understanding of flow around the net cage

    Multizone decomposition for simulation of time-dependent problems using the multiquadric scheme

    AbstractThis paper discusses the application of the multizone decomposition technique with multiquadric scheme for the numerical solutions of a time-dependent problem. The construction of the multizone algorithm is based on a domain decomposition technique to subdivide the global region into a number of finite subdomains. The reduction of ill-conditioning and the improvement of the computational efficiency can be achieved with a smaller resulting matrix on each subdomain. The proposed scheme is applied to a hypothetical linear two-dimensional hydrodynamic model as well as a real-life nonlinear two-dimensional hydrodynamic model in the Tolo Harbour of Hong Kong to simulate the water flow circulation patterns. To illustrate the computational efficiency and accuracy of the technique, the numerical results are compared with those solutions obtained from the same problem using a single domain multiquadric scheme. The computational efficiency of the multizone technique is improved substantially with faster convergence without significant degradation in accuracy

    Directional motion of Gallium-based liquid metal induced by asymmetric chemical surrounding

    Interfacial, or surface tension, is a significant topic in chemical education. This paper describes the directional motion of gallium-based liquid metal drops, resulting from a difference of interfacial tension across the drop. This demonstration can engage students in discovering the underlying chemical principles. A mechanism for the drop’s directional motion is proposed to provide insight into this intriguing phenomenon. It appears that unbalanced chemical environments cause different physical or chemical processes to occur on each hemisphere of the drop, such as a pH difference, redox reactions, galvanic replacement, or adsorption. As a result, a difference in the interfacial tension across the drop is generated, providing the driving force that acts on the drop. This demonstration can be used to introduce the fundamental principles in chemical reactions, such as redox activity, electrical double-layer formation, and interfacial tension

    Microstructures and mechanical properties of as cast Mg‐Zr‐Ca alloys for biomedical applications

    The microstructures and mechanical properties of as cast Mg-Zr-Ca alloys were investigated for potential use in biomedical applications. The Mg-Zr-Ca alloys were fabricated by commercial pure Mg (99.9 mass-%), Ca (99.9 mass-%) and master Mg-33 mass-%Zr alloy. The microstructures of the alloys were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis and optical microscopy, and the mechanical properties were determined from tensile tests. The experimental results indicate that the Mg-Zr-Ca alloys with 1 mass-%Ca are composed of one single a phase; these alloys with 2 mass-%Ca consist of both Mg 2Ca and α phase, and all the alloys exhibit typical coarse microstructures. An increase in Zr increases the strength of Mg-Zr-Ca alloys with 1 mass-%Ca, and the formation of Mg2Ca decreases the strength of the alloys. Mg-1Zr-1Ca alloy (mass-%) has the highest strength and best ductility among all the studied alloys

    Spatially periodic complex-valued solutions of the Burgers and KdV-Burgers equations are studied in this paper. It is shown that for any sufficiently large time T, there exists an explicit initial data such that its corresponding solution of the Burgers equation blows up at T. In addition, the global convergence and regularity of series solutions is established for initial data satisfying mild conditions
