Instrumentation of a high-sensitivity microwave vector detection system for low-temperature applications

We present the design and the circuit details of a high-sensitivity microwave vector detection system, which is aiming for studying the low-dimensional electron system embedded in the slots of a coplanar waveguide at low temperatures. The coplanar waveguide sample is placed inside a phase-locked loop; the phase change of the sample may cause a corresponding change in the operation frequency, which can be measured precisely. We also employ a double-pulse modulation on the microwave signals, which comprises a fast pulse modulation for gated averaging and a slow pulse modulation for lock-in detection. In measurements on real samples at low temperatures, this system provides much better resolutions in both amplitude and phase than most of the conventional vector analyzers at power levels below -65 dBm.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figures, 1 table, lette

Method and apparatus for positioning a robotic end effector

    Get PDF
A robotic end effector and operation protocol for a reliable grasp of a target object irrespective of the target's contours is disclosed. A robotic hand includes a plurality of jointed fingers, one of which, like a thumb, is in opposed relation to the other. Each finger is comprised of at least two jointed sections, and provided with reflective proximity sensors, one on the inner surface of each finger section. Each proximity sensor comprises a transmitter of a beam of radiant energy and means for receiving reflections of the transmitted energy when reflected by a target object and for generating electrical signals responsive thereto. On the fingers opposed to the thumb, the proximity sensors on the outermost finger sections are aligned in an outer sensor array and the sensors on the intermediate finger sections and sensors on the innermost finger sections are similarly arranged to form an intermediate sensor array and an inner sensor array, respectively. The invention includes a computer system with software and/or circuitry for a protocol comprising the steps in sequence of: (1) approach axis alignment to maximize the number of outer layer sensors which detect the target; (2) non-contact contour following the target by the robot fingers to minimize target escape potential; and (3) closing to rigidize the target including dynamically re-adjusting the end effector finger alignment to compensate for target motion. A signal conditioning circuit and gain adjustment means are included to maintain the dynamic range of low power reflection signals

Hot Nuclear Matter Equation of State with a Three-body Force

The finite temperature Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach is extended by introducing a microscopic three-body force. In the framework of the extended model, the equation of state of hot asymmetric nuclear matter and its isospin dependence have been investigated. The critical temperature of liquid-gas phase transition for symmetric nuclear matter has been calculated and compared with other predictions. It turns out that the three-body force gives a repulsive contribution to the equation of state which is stronger at higher density and as a consequence reduces the critical temperature of liquid-gas phase transition. The calculated energy per nucleon of hot asymmetric nuclear matter is shown to satisfy a simple quadratic dependence on asymmetric parameter ÎČ\beta as in the zero-temperature case. The symmetry energy and its density dependence have been obtained and discussed. Our results show that the three-body force affects strongly the high-density behavior of the symmetry energy and makes the symmetry energy more sensitive to the variation of temperature. The temperature dependence and the isospin dependence of other physical quantities, such as the proton and neutron single particle potentials and effective masses are also studied. Due to the additional repulsion produced by the three-body force contribution, the proton and neutron single particle potentials are correspondingly enhanced as similar to the zero-temperature case.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure

    Data Unfolding with Wiener-SVD Method

Data unfolding is a common analysis technique used in HEP data analysis. Inspired by the deconvolution technique in the digital signal processing, a new unfolding technique based on the SVD technique and the well-known Wiener filter is introduced. The Wiener-SVD unfolding approach achieves the unfolding by maximizing the signal to noise ratios in the effective frequency domain given expectations of signal and noise and is free from regularization parameter. Through a couple examples, the pros and cons of the Wiener-SVD approach as well as the nature of the unfolded results are discussed.Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, match the accepted version by JINS

Cross sections for pentaquark baryon production from protons in reactions induced by hadrons and photons

    Get PDF
Using hadronic Lagrangians that include the interaction of pentaquark Θ+\Theta^+ baryon with KK and NN, we evaluate the cross sections for its production from meson-proton, proton-proton, and photon-proton reactions near threshold. With empirical coupling constants and form factors, the predicted cross sections are about 1.5 mb in kaon-proton reactions, 0.1 mb in rho-nucleon reactions, 0.05 mb in pion-nucleon reactions, 20 ÎŒ\mub in proton-proton reactions, and 40 nb in photon-proton reactions.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure

Pragmatic View of Short-Baseline Neutrino Oscillations

    Get PDF
We present the results of global analyses of short-baseline neutrino oscillation data in 3+1, 3+2 and 3+1+1 neutrino mixing schemes. We show that the data do not allow us to abandon the simplest 3+1 scheme in favor of the more complex 3+2 and 3+1+1 schemes. We present the allowed region in the 3+1 parameter space, which is located at Δm412\Delta{m}^2_{41} between 0.82 and 2.19 eV2\text{eV}^2 at 3σ3\sigma. The case of no oscillations is disfavored by about 6σ6\sigma, which decreases dramatically to about 2σ2\sigma if the LSND data are not considered. Hence, new high-precision experiments are needed to check the LSND signal.Comment: 6 pages. Final version published in Phys. Rev. D 88, 073008 (2013
