    A multi-band semiclassical model for surface hopping quantum dynamics

    In the paper we derive a semiclassical model for surface hopping allowing quantum dynamical non-adiabatic transition between different potential energy surfaces in which cases the classical Born-Oppenheimer approximation breaks down. The model is derived using the Wigner transform and Weyl quantization, and the central idea is to evolve the entire Wigner matrix rather than just the diagonal entries as was done previously in the adiabatic case. The off-diagonal entries of the Wigner matrix suitably describe the non-adiabatic transition, such as the Berry connection, for avoided crossings. We study the numerical approximation issues of the model, and then conduct numerical experiments to validate the model.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figure

    Empirical Study of Travel Time Estimation and Reliability

    This paper explores the travel time distribution of different types of urban roads, the link and path average travel time, and variance estimation methods by analyzing the large-scale travel time dataset detected from automatic number plate readers installed throughout Beijing. The results show that the best-fitting travel time distribution for different road links in 15 min time intervals differs for different traffic congestion levels. The average travel time for all links on all days can be estimated with acceptable precision by using normal distribution. However, this distribution is not suitable to estimate travel time variance under some types of traffic conditions. Path travel time can be estimated with high precision by summing the travel time of the links that constitute the path. In addition, the path travel time variance can be estimated by the travel time variance of the links, provided that the travel times on all the links along a given path are generated by statistically independent distributions. These findings can be used to develop and validate microscopic simulations or online travel time estimation and prediction systems

    Rapid thermal annealing of damage induced by implantation in silicon can be a cost effective technology for the processing of terrestrial solar cells as compared to classical furnace or pulsed laser annealing. Unfortunately, drawbacks as poor bulk lifetime or low open-circuit-voltage occur as well. We have attempted to overcome these limitations for POLYX multicrystalline cast silicon grown by CGE (France) by keeping the annealing temperature of the phosphorus doped layer as high as 800 °C (to ensure a good crystalline quality and a high dopant activation) while being less than 900 °C (to minimize the effect of degradation of the base properties). The purpose of the present work is to investigate the I-V characteristics of the cells and to compare to those obtained with classical furnace annealing or with classical diffusion process

    miR-1908 as a novel prognosis marker of glioma via promoting malignant phenotype and modulating SPRY4/RAF1 axis

    MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are reported to be involved in the development of glioma. However, study on miRNAs in glioma is limited. The present study aimed to identify miRNAs which can act as potential novel prognostic markers for glioma and analyze its possible mechanism. We show that miR-1908 correlates with shorter survival time of glioma patients via promoting cell proliferation, invasion, anti-apoptosis and regulating SPRY4/RAF1 axis. Analysis of GEO and TCGA database found that miR-1908 was significantly upregulated in glioma tissues, and strongly associated with shorter survival time of glioma patients. Further Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis revealed that miR-1908 is mainly involved in regulating cell proliferation, invasion and apoptosis. To further confirm the above results, in vitro, glioma U251 cells were transfected with miR-1908 mimics or inhibitor, and upregulated miR-1908 promoted U251 cell proliferation, and enhanced the ability of invasion by transwell assay. In addition, upregulated miR-1908 also enhanced anti-apoptosis ability of U251 cells through decreasing pro-apoptosis protein Bax expression. Since miRNAs regulate numerous biological processes by targeting broad set of messenger RNAs, validated target genes of miR-1908 in glioma were analyzed by Targetscan and miRTarBase databases. Among them SPRY4 was significantly decreased in glioma tissues and associated with short survival time, which was selected as the key target gene of miR-1908. Moreover, protein-protein interaction (PPI) showed that SPRY4 could interacted with pro-oncogene RAF1 and negatively correlated with RAF1 expression. Consistent with above analysis, in vitro, western blot analysis identified that miR-1908 upregulated significantly decreased SPRY4 expression and increased RAF1 expression. Hence, miR-1908 was correlated with poor prognosis of glioma via promoting cell proliferation, invasion, anti-apoptosis and regulating SPRF4/RAF1 axis. Our results elucidated the tumor promoting role of miR-1908 and established miR-1908 as a potential novel prognostic marker for glioma

    Modern sugarcane cultivars (Saccharum spp., 2n = 100~120) are complex polyploids primarily derived from interspecific hybridization between S. officinarum and S. spontaneum. Nobilization is the theory of utilizing wild germplasm in sugarcane breeding, and is the foundation for utilizing S. spontaneum for stress resistance. However, the exact chromosomal transmission remains elusive due to a lack of chromosome-specific markers. Here, we applied chromosome-specific oligonucleotide (oligo)-based probes for identifying chromosomes 1-10 of the F1 hybrids between S. officinarum and S. spontaneum. Then, S. spontaneum-specific repetitive DNA probes were used to distinguish S. spontaneum in these hybrids. This oligo- fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) system proved to be an efficient tool for revealing individual chromosomal inheritance during nobilization. We discovered the complete doubling of S. officinarum-derived chromosomes in most F1 hybrids. Notably, we also found defective S. officinarum-derived chromosome doubling in the F1 hybrid Yacheng75-4191, which exhibited 1.5n transmission for all nonhomologous chromosomes. Altogether, these results highlight the presence of variable chromosome transmission in nobilization between S. officinarum and S. spontaneum, including 1.5n + n and 2n + n. These findings provide robust chromosome markers for in-depth studies into the molecular mechanism underlying chromosome doubling during the nobilization, as well as tracing chromosomal inheritance for sugarcane breeding

    Stretchable elastic synaptic transistors for neurologically integrated soft engineering systems

    Artificial synaptic devices that can be stretched similar to those appearing in soft-bodied animals, such as earthworms, could be seamlessly integrated onto soft machines toward enabled neurological functions. Here, we report a stretchable synaptic transistor fully based on elastomeric electronic materials, which exhibits a full set of synaptic characteristics. These characteristics retained even the rubbery synapse that is stretched by 50%. By implementing stretchable synaptic transistor with mechanoreceptor in an array format, we developed a deformable sensory skin, where the mechanoreceptors interface the external stimulations and generate presynaptic pulses and then the synaptic transistors render postsynaptic potentials. Furthermore, we demonstrated a soft adaptive neurorobot that is able to perform adaptive locomotion based on robotic memory in a programmable manner upon physically tapping the skin. Our rubbery synaptic transistor and neurologically integrated devices pave the way toward enabled neurological functions in soft machines and other applications

    Effect of YiShenJianPi recipe on semen quality and sperm mitochondria in mice with oligoasthenozoospermia induced by tripterygium glycosides

    Background:Kidney tonifying - spleen strengthening method being one of the modalities for treatment of astheno-oligozoospermia is currently commonly used in the clinical setting. To investigate the mechanism of YiShenJianPi (YSJP) Recipe, used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to benefit “the kidney” and strengthen “the spleen”.Materials and Methods: Oligoasthenozoospermia, male BALB/c mice were randomly divided into normal control, disease model, positive control, low-dosage and high-dosage groups. Oligoasthenozoospermia was induced by tripterygium glucosides intragastric administration before treatment started.Through using computer-aided sperm analysis to test the changes in sperm quality, utilizing flow cytometry to test the percentage of sperm with normal mitochondrial transmembrane potential (JC-1 + %), utilizing X-ray microscopy to observe epididymal sperm ultra-microstructure placing special emphasis and photographing the differences in mitochondria of the flagellum region.Results: Compared with DM, sperm quality of the treated mice was significantly better (P<0.05, respectively). Compared with PC, the LD group had significantly better quality sperms, while the parameters in the HD group were numerically better. Compared with NC, all other groups had significantly lower percentage of sperms with normal mitochondrial membrane potential. In PC, LD and HD groups, the percentage of sperms with normal mitochondrial membrane potential was significantly higher than that of D. The 9+9+2 mitochondrial sheath structure was complete in NC but damaged in DM. In the treatment groups, this structure was fairly clear.Conclusion: YSJP improved semen quality with oligoasthenozoospermia by improving sperm mitochondrial membrane potential and restoring sperm mitochondrial ultrastructure.Keywords: traditional Chinese medicine, oligoasthenozoospermia, semen quality, mitochondrial membrane potential, mitochondrial ultrastructur
