However, in novice writers’ texts citation often goes hand in hand with plagiarism. Although student plagiarism has been a problem raising wide concern, not much research, in particular in the context of Hong Kong, has been conducted to investigate how students’ understanding of proper citation may connect to their writing practices and how teachers respond to students’ citational practices when Turnitin.com is involved in the assessment stage. Using a case study approach, the present study triangulates multiple sources of data to illuminate several students’ citational practices and the invisibility of the problematic aspects to their lecturers. We end the paper with a few pedagogical recommendations, addressing the role of subject professors and peer learning, noting the importance of using Turnitin in ways that provide teaching-learning opportunities, and advocating pedagogy that goes beyond the teaching of referencing skills

    A unified concurrency control algorithm for distributed database systems

    We present a unified concurrency-control algorithm for distributed database systems in which each transaction may choose its own concurrency control protocol. Specifically, they integrate two-phase locking, timestamp ordering, and precedence agreement into one unified concurrency-control scheme.     Rift Valley fever virus structural proteins: expression, characterization and assembly of recombinant proteins

    BACKGROUND: Studies on Rift Valley Fever Virus (RVFV) infection process and morphogenesis have been hampered due to the biosafety conditions required to handle this virus, making alternative systems such as recombinant virus-like particles, that may facilitate understanding of these processes are highly desirable. In this report we present the expression and characterization of RVFV structural proteins N, Gn and Gc and demonstrate the efficient generation of RVFV virus-like particles (VLPs) using a baculovirus expression system. RESULTS: A recombinant baculovirus, expressing nucleocapsid (N) protein of RVFV at high level under the control of the polyhedrin promoter was generated. Gel filtration analysis indicated that expressed N protein could form complex multimers. Further, N protein complex when visualized by electron microscopy (EM) exhibited particulate, nucleocapsid like-particles (NLPs). Subsequently, a single recombinant virus was generated that expressed the RVFV glycoproteins (Gn/Gc) together with the N protein using a dual baculovirus vector. Both the Gn and Gc glycoproteins were detected not only in the cytoplasm but also on the cell surface of infected cells. Moreover, expression of the Gn/Gc in insect cells was able to induce cell-cell fusion after a low pH shift indicating the retention of their functional characteristics. In addition, assembly of these three structural proteins into VLPs was identified by purification of cells' supernatant through potassium tartrate-glycerol gradient centrifugation followed by EM analysis. The purified particles exhibited enveloped structures that were similar to the structures of the wild-type RVFV virion particle. In parallel, a second recombinant virus was constructed that expressed only Gc protein together with N protein. This dual recombinant virus also generated VLPs with clear spiky structures, but appeared to be more pleomorphic than the VLPs with both glycoproteins, suggesting that Gc and probably also Gn interacts with N protein complex independent of each other. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that baculovirus expression system has enormous potential to produce large amount of VLPs that may be used both for fundamental and applied research of RVFV

    Molecular characterization and expression analysis of a hepcidin gene from rice field eel (Monopterus albus)

    Hepcidin is a cysteine-rich, dual-function peptide with antimicrobial activity that plays crucial roles in iron homeostasis. A few hepcidin-like genes have been isolated from teleost. Here, we have identified a hepcidin-like gene from rice field eel (RFE), Monopterus albus. Nucleotide sequences including cDNA and genomic DNA (GenBank accession numbers: FJ436808 and FJ594996, respectively) and deduced amino acid sequences were presented. In the 949 bp-long genomic sequence, two introns and three exons were identified. The full-length cDNA encodes a prepropeptide of 90 amino acid residues. RTPCR analysis suggested that hepcidin transcripts are highly abundant in the liver and kidney, less abundant in the heart, skin, brain, blood cells, intestine, spleen and stomach and undetectable in muscle. After challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila infection or iron-dextran stimulation, the hepcidin transcript levels were analyzed by RT-PCR. The results revealed that the expression of hepcidin dramatically increased at 24 h post-infection of the pathogen injection. Moreover, hepcidin mRNAs in the liver, intestine and brain were 2.4, 1.5 and 2-fold increase, respectively, compared with the control animals after 5 days in iron-dextran injected RFEs.Key words: Rice field eel, Monopterus albus, hepcidin, gene expressio

    Chandra and Swift X-ray Observations of the X-ray Pulsar SMC X-2 During the Outburst of 2015

    We report the Chandra/HRC-S and Swift/XRT observations for the 2015 outburst of the high-mass X-ray binary pulsar in the Small Magellanic Cloud, SMC X-2. While previous studies suggested that either an O star or a Be star in the field is the high-mass companion of SMC X-2, our Chandra/HRC-S image unambiguously confirms the O-type star as the true optical counterpart. Using the Swift/XRT observations, we extracted accurate orbital parameters of the pulsar binary through a time of arrivals analysis. In addition, there were two X-ray dips near the inferior conjunction, which are possibly caused by eclipses or an ionized high-density shadow wind near the companion’s surface. Finally, we propose that an outflow driven by the radiation pressure from day ∼10 played an important role in the X-ray/optical evolution of the outburst.postprin
