Consumption smoothing and vunerability in Russia
Applying bootstrapped quantile regression to the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring
Survey (RLMS) data, we examine the channels through which individuals experience
and seek to cope with changes in consumption. We find that married individuals living
in small households, with educated heads in urban areas are better equipped to smooth
consumption. Investigating the impact of idiosyncratic shocks, we find that the labour
market is an important transmission mechanism allowing households to smooth their
consumption but also exposing them to risk, mainly through job loss. Outside of pension
payments the formal social safety net does not facilitate consumption smoothing, thus
heightening the importance of informal coping institutions. It transpires that both
support from relatives/friends and home production act as important insurance
mechanisms for the most vulnerable
Charge-conjugation violating neutrino interactions in supernovae
The well known charge conjugation violating interactions in the Standard
Model increase neutrino- and decrease anti-neutrino- nucleon cross sections.
This impacts neutrino transport in core collapse supernovae through "recoil"
corrections of order the neutrino energy over the nucleon mass . All
corrections to neutrino transport deep inside a protoneutron star are
calculated from angular integrals of the Boltzmann equation. We find these
corrections significantly modify neutrino currents at high temperatures. This
produces a large mu and tau number for the protoneutron star and can change the
ratio of neutrons to protons. In addition, the relative size of neutrino mean
free paths changes. At high temperatures, the electron anti-neutrino mean free

Cognitive impairment among prostate cancer patients: an overview of reviews
To identify and clarify definitions and methods of measuring cancer-related cognitive impairment among prostate cancer patients treated with Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT) and to assess the incidence and prevalence of cognitive impairment. A systematic review of Medline, EMBASE, PubMed, PsycINFO and CINAHL up to December 2015 was undertaken to identify English-language reviews. A total of twenty-eight reviews were identified describing twenty primary studies. There were no studies of incidence. Reported prevalence rates varied between 10 and 69%. Cognitive domains impaired by ADT included: verbal memory, visuospatial ability and executive functions. Cognitive impairment was infrequently defined and four definitions were reported. A variety of measures and methods were used to assess cognitive function including neuropsychological tests, self-report measures and clinical assessments. The finding that, often, one measure was used to assess more than one aspect of cognition is likely to have contributed to imprecise estimates. There is a need to agree a definition of cognitive impairment in the clinical epidemiology of cancer and to standardise the selection of measures in order to aid accurate assessment and fair comparisons across studies regarding the prevalence of cognitive impairment among prostate cancer patient
Incentives for food waste diversion:Exploration of a long term successful Chinese city residential scheme
There are no academic studies of incentives schemes for household recycling which are successful or useful on large scales in the longer term. For food waste sorting very few successful schemes have been reported, with or without incentives. Here the authors report findings about a two-year old, 23,000-household scheme in Nanjing, China, from an exploratory case study designed to identify key factors using observations, measurements, company data and interviews. Results indicate that residents were initially motivated by the incentives (e.g. points exchanged for eggs) and social influences, but habit was the key factor for maintaining their behaviour, and cited as the main reason they would continue if the incentives stopped. Interestingly, a perceived improvement in the community site’s cleanliness was also cited as an ongoing motivation, and social influences was not mentioned. The perceived success of the scheme was confirmed via measurements of participation rates (32%), the weight of food waste diverted (0.62kg per household), and estimates of the contamination rate (<1%) and food capture rate (30%) 22 months after start. This work identifies key factors for further studies of positive incentives as habit (and thus duration), site cleanliness, and variation in ranking with time of social norms
On the Ricci dark energy model
We study the Ricci dark energy model (RDE) which was introduced as an
alternative to the holographic dark energy model. We point out that an
accelerating phase of the RDE is that of a constant dark energy model. This
implies that the RDE may not be a new model of explaining the present

Low off-state Leakage Currents in AlGaN/GaN High Electron Mobility Transistors By Employing A Highly Stressed SiNx Surface Passivation Layer
In this study, the impact of the stress in SiNx surface passivation layers on off-state drain and gate leakage currents and off-state breakdown voltage in AlGaN/GaN High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMTs) is assessed. The SiNx films were deposited at room temperature by inductively coupled plasma chemical vapour deposition (ICP-CVD). Compared to unpassivated devices, the off-state drain and gate leakage currents of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs is increased by up to 2 orders of magnitude for a 200 nm thick SiNx passivation layer with 309 MPa compressive stress. The use of a bilayer SiNx passivation scheme comprising 70 nm SiNx with 309 MPa compressive stress followed by 130 nm SiNx with 880 MPa compressive stress resulted in off-state drain and gate leakage currents reduced by up to 1 order of magnitude when compared to unpassivated devices

Modeling the strangeness content of hadronic matter
The strangeness content of hadronic matter is studied in a string-flip model
that reproduces various aspects of the QCD-inspired phenomenology, such as
quark clustering at low density and color deconfinement at high density, while
avoiding long range van der Waals forces. Hadronic matter is modeled in terms
of its quark constituents by taking into account its internal flavor (u,d,s)
and color (red, blue, green) degrees of freedom. Variational Monte-Carlo
simulations in three spatial dimensions are performed for the ground-state
energy of the system. The onset of the transition to strange matter is found to
be influenced by weak, yet not negligible, clustering correlations. The phase
diagram of the system displays an interesting structure containing both
continuous and discontinuous phase transitions. Strange matter is found to be

Vortex liquid correlations induced by in-plane field in underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d
By measuring the Josephson Plasma Resonance, we have probed the influence of
an in-plane magnetic field on the pancake vortex correlations along the c-axis
in heavily underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Tc = 72.4 +/- 0.6 K) single crystals
both in the vortex liquid and in the vortex solid phase. Whereas the in-plane
field enhances the interlayer phase coherence in the liquid state close to the
melting line, it slightly depresses it in the solid state. This is interpreted
as the result of an attractive force between pancake vortices and Josephson
vortices, apparently also present in the vortex liquid state. The results
unveil a boundary between a correlated vortex liquid in which pancakes adapt to

TLR4 stimulation by LPS enhances angiogenesis in a co-culture system consisting of primary human osteoblasts and outgrowth endothelial cells
The development of new approaches leading to fast and successful vascularization of tissue-engineered constructs is one of the most intensively studied subjects in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Recently, TLR4 activation and LPS stimulation of endothelial cells have been reported to promote angiogenesis in a variety of settings. In this study, we demonstrate that TLR4 activation by Ultrapure LPS Escherichia coli 0111:B4 (LPS-EB) significantly enhances microvessel formation in a co-culture system consisting of outgrowth endothelial cells (OECs) and primary human osteoblasts (pOBs). The precise modes of TLR4 action on the process of angiogenesis have also been investigated in this study. Using quantitative fluorescence microscopy in monocultures of OECs and pOBs, it was found that TLR4 activation through LPS-EB upregulates the expression level of TLR4/MYD88 and enhances both angiogenesis and osteogenesis. Furthermore, ELISA and qRT-PCR have shown that the level of two adhesion molecules (ICAM-1 and E-selectin), two cytokines (IL-6 and IL-8) and two growth factors (VEGF and PDGF-BB) related to angiogenesis increase significantly after LPS-EB treatment. This increased understanding of the role of TLR4 in angiogenesis could be of value in various settings related to tissue repair and tissue engineering. Moreover, since LPS and TLR4 agonists improve angiogenesis and osteogenesis, TLR4 agonists (endogenous or synthetic) could be used for angiogenesis intervention in vivo and therefore could be tested for their potential clinical applications in promoting angiogenesis in bone tissue engineering
