Remote labs in higher engineering education:engaging students with active learning pedagogy

In engineering education laboratories serve as experiential learning aimed at engaging students. The past decades saw an increased use of online laboratories, including virtual and remote labs. Remote labs, providing online interfaces to physical labs, allow students to conduct experiments with real-world equipment anywhere and at any time. However, this advantage challenges active student engagement. Little evidence is available on effective pedagogies for student engagement in remote labs. This paper aims to identify how a remote lab assignment based on active learning pedagogy in higher engineering education supports student engagement, with the overarching aim to promote students’ transfer skills from theory to practice. Our research question, “What impact does an active learning pedagogy have on students’ engagement with a remote lab?“, was answered with a case study of two courses on systems and control in higher engineering education. Data included digital traces, course evaluations, interviews, and observations. Students reported how remote labs, to be used anywhere at any time, require self-regulation and scheduling of experiments. However, accompanying open-ended lab assignments encouraged students to engage with the lab and the theoretical content of the course by creating a ‘need-to-know.’ Our results furthermore suggest the need for a structured arrangement of open-ended lab assignment, lab preparation, teamwork supporting peer learning and discussion, progress meetings focused on feedback and formative assessment, and reports focused on reflection. Engagement can be strengthened by support for students before and during the experiments, clear signposting about the experiment and lab set-up, and pre-structuring of lab activities

In this study, bio-hydrogen generation potential of sugar-beet processing wastes (sugar-beet processing wastewater and beet-pulp) through dark fermentation was investigated. For this purpose, four different experimental set-ups were used. In the first set-up, sugar-beet processing wastewater was used along with four different cultures to investigate the effect of culture type on bio-hydrogen production. In addition, unseeded reactor was prepared to investigate bio-hydrogen production potential of indigenous microorganisms. The highest bio-hydrogen production yield (87.7 mL H2/g COD) was observed in the unseeded reactor. In the second set-up, beet-pulp was compared with sugar-beet processing wastewater in terms of bio-hydrogen generation potentials at an initial COD level of 4.5 g/L. In the third set-up, bio-hydrogen productivities of only beet-pulp and co-digestion of beet-pulp and sugar-beet processing wastewater at high COD values were investigated. The results of third set-up revealed that the reactor fed by 20 g/L COD beet-pulp provided the highest bio-hydrogen production yield (95.6 mL H2 /g COD). Finally, in the fourth set-up, the effects of five different pretreatment methods on solubilization of beet-pulp were investigated. Then, three out of five pretreatment methods were chosen to compare the corresponding bio-hydrogen productivities. Maximum bio-hydrogen production yield (115.6 mL H2/g COD) was observed in reactor which contained alkaline pretreated beet-pulp. Based on the results obtained in this study, it is postulated that, bio-hydrogen production from sugar-beet processing wastes by dark fermentation can not only enable waste minimization but also contribute to sustainability via valuable bio-based product formation from wastes, namely bio-hydrogen.M.S. - Master of Scienc

A healthy environment is possible with balanced biodiversity. Birds serve as indicators for biodiversity. Buldan Yayla Lake where the study was conducted is a 464 acres lake in the Buldan District of Denizli Province. In the field, bird diversity was determined in 2017. A total of 163 species that 88 are from passeriformes and totally 16 different orders were recorded. When the birds were evaluated according to their status in the field, it was found that 72 species were native and 91 were migratory or transit migrating species. Buldan Yayla Lake is a small wetland area and with its current status, the area has gained swamp and wet meadow. The wetland, which is at risk of eutrophication, has a tendency to become terrestrial in time and is now at risk of losing its substantial bird wealth

The aim of this study is to investigate the breeding biology of Collared pratincole, a migratory bird species in Antalya/Boğazkent (Turkey). There are a lot of habitat types in research area of 200 ha. This speciality serves great biodiversity. Field work was carried out from March to October between 2016 and 2017. 35 individuals and 16 nests were found in the first year and 25 individuals and eight nests in the next year. The egg volume has been calculated according to the formulation V=0.51 X L X W2 while egg index has been figured with regard to EI=100xW/L formulation. According to the hatchling size, the breeding success of the species was 86.7% in 2016 and 85.7% in 2017.Considering the fledgling size, the figures were 46.4% in 2016 and 66.7% in 2017 respectively. Many factors affecting the breeding success of the species were specified in the region. Hooded crows (Corvus cornix), for example, was detected as being the natural predator of the species. Furthermore, the invasion of the breeding areas by humans and human-related activities such as construction, tourism and agriculture also harmfully affects the breeding success. According to our study Antalya/Boğazkent is a very important bird area in Turkey

Local parameter identifiability of large-scale nonlinear models based on the output sensitivity covariance matrix

The use of first-principle models is motivated by the potential of detailed information available as well as their versatility. Therefore, it is important to keep these models up to date so the models represent accurate enough the processes at hand. However, most of these models are nonlinear with a large number of states and parameters but with a relatively low number of measured outputs. This lack of measurements hinders the possibility to estimate all of the parameters present in the model. In this work, parameter identifiability of large-scale nonlinear models is explored using the empirical output controllability covariance matrix approach. This empirical covariance matrix is used to extract the output sensitivity matrix of the model to assess parameter identifiability. The advantages of the proposed methods are discussed while different sensitivity indexes are evaluated to draw sound conclusions on the parameter ranking results. A large-scale reactive batch distillation process simulation is used as a demonstrator
