Understanding Others: How Cultural Awareness Affects Teaching Practices
There are many factors that can affect a teacher’s classroom practices. The increase in awareness of diversity in classrooms, in recent years, has brought up the importance of assessing teachers’ level of cultural understanding. In this paper, the effect of cultural awareness on a student teacher’s classroom practices in a third grade general education classroom and a learning support classroom. The data for this self-study was conduct by analyzing daily journal entries that chronicled how teaching practices were impacted by awareness of the cultural diversity in the classroom. Four codes were used to organize the data taken from the journal entries. The four codes that were used were the use of visuals, use of gestures, use of native language, and understanding of others’ cultures. These four codes describe how a teacher’s classroom practices were affected by their own understanding of their students’ cultural identities

Four wave mixing oscillation in a semiconductor microcavity: Generation of two correlated polariton populations
We demonstrate a novel kind of polariton four wave mixing oscillation. Two
pump polaritons scatter towards final states that emit two beams of equal
intensity, separated both spatially and in polarization with respect to the
pumps. The measurement of the intensity fluctuations of the emitted light
demonstrates that the final states are strongly correlated.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures In this strongly revised version several new

Structural health monitoring of an innovative timber building
A main focus in timber construction research is the development of innovative, sustainable and reliable structures. In order to determine the long-term structural behaviour of these novel structures, structural health monitoring is a valuable tool. In the past two years an innovative timber-hybrid pilot building has been conceived, designed and realized at ETH Zürich. The building contains four innovative structural systems, a post-tensioned timber frame, two timber-concrete hybrid floor systems using beech LVL, and a biaxial pure timber floor in beech wood. In order to fully understand the combined structural behaviour of these innovative systems an extensive monitoring system was set up. The dense sensor network was implemented along with the construction progress, in order to also quantify the effects of important construction stages on the structural behaviour (addition of significant loads, addition of stiffening elements, extreme changes in environmental climate, etc.). The installed setup includes 16 load cells, measuring the changes in the post-tension force in the frame, absolute deformation measurements, temperature and relative humidity sensors, as well as measurements of the moisture content of timber. The monitoring campaign is planned to be continued for several years beyond the completion of construction, in order to quantify the long-term behaviour during the use phase of the building
Generalized Spherical Principal Component Analysis
Outliers contaminating data sets are a challenge to statistical estimators.
Even a small fraction of outlying observations can heavily influence most
classical statistical methods. In this paper we propose generalized spherical
principal component analysis, a new robust version of principal component
analysis that is based on the generalized spatial sign covariance matrix.
Supporting theoretical properties of the proposed method including influence
functions, breakdown values and asymptotic efficiencies are studied, and a
simulation study is conducted to compare our new method to existing methods. We
also propose an adjustment of the generalized spatial sign covariance matrix to
achieve better Fisher consistency properties. We illustrate that generalized
spherical principal component analysis, depending on a chosen radial function,
has both great robustness and efficiency properties in addition to a low
computational cost
