Vibration and stress analysis of soft-bonded shuttle insulation tiles. Modal analysis with compact widely space stringers
An efficient iterative procedure is described for the vibration and modal stress analysis of reusable surface insulation (RSI) of multi-tiled space shuttle panels. The method, which is quite general, is rapidly convergent and highly useful for this application. A user-oriented computer program based upon this procedure and titled RESIST (REusable Surface Insulation Stresses) has been prepared for the analysis of compact, widely spaced, stringer-stiffened panels. RESIST, which uses finite element methods, obtains three dimensional tile stresses in the isolator, arrestor (if any) and RSI materials. Two dimensional stresses are obtained in the tile coating and the stringer-stiffened primary structure plate. A special feature of the program is that all the usual detailed finite element grid data is generated internally from a minimum of input data. The program can accommodate tile idealizations with up to 850 nodes (2550 degrees-of-freedom) and primary structure idealizations with a maximum of 10,000 degrees-of-freedom. The primary structure vibration capability is achieved through the development of a new rapid eigenvalue program named ALARM (Automatic LArge Reduction of Matrices to tridiagonal form)
Thermal stress analysis of reusable surface insulation for shuttle
An iterative procedure for accurately determining tile stresses associated with static mechanical and thermally induced internal loads is presented. The necessary conditions for convergence of the method are derived. An user-oriented computer program based upon the present method of analysis was developed. The program is capable of analyzing multi-tiled panels and determining the associated stresses. Typical numerical results from this computer program are presented
Magnetoresistance due to Domain Walls in Micron Scale Fe Wires with Stripe Domains
The magnetoresistance (MR) associated with domain boundaries has been
investigated in microfabricated bcc Fe (0.65 to 20 m linewidth) wires with
controlled stripe domains. Domain configurations have been characterized using
magnetic force microscopy. MR measurements as a function of field angle,
temperature and domain configuration are used to estimate MR contributions due
to resistivity anisotropy and domain walls. Evidence is presented that domain
boundaries enhance the conductivity in such microstructures over a broad range

Thermodynamics as an alternative foundation for zero-temperature density functional theory and spin density functional theory
Thermodynamics provides a transparent definition of the free energy of
density functional theory (DFT), and of its derivatives - the potentials, at
finite temperatures T. By taking the T to 0 limit, it is shown here that both
DFT and spin-dependent DFT (for ground states) suffer from precisely the same
benign ambiguities: (a) charge and spin quantization lead to "up to a constant"
indeterminacies in the potential and the magnetic field respectively, and (b)
the potential in empty subspaces is undetermined but irrelevant. Surprisingly,
these simple facts were inaccessible within the standard formulation, leading
to recent discussions of apparent difficulties within spin-DFT.Comment: RevTeX, to appear in Phys. Rev.
The Therapeutic Alliance Over 10 Sessions of Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder: Agreement and Congruence Analysis and Relation to Outcome.
The authors examined whether alliance dynamics are affected by tailoring the therapeutic relationship to the individual patient in brief psychotherapy of borderline personality disorder. Sixty patients were randomized to 10-session Good Psychiatric Management (GPM-BV) or GPM combined with Motive-Oriented Therapeutic Relationship techniques (MOTR+GPM-BV). Patient- and therapist-rated alliance was assessed weekly. Self-reported symptomatic distress was assessed pre-, mid-, and posttreatment. In MOTR+GPM-BV, stronger therapist-rated alliance predicted lower symptomatic distress in the same timepoint, but not in a lag, whereas symptomatic distress predicted therapist-rated alliance in a lag. Therapist-rated alliance was lower than patient-rated alliance in GPM-BV but not in MOTR+GPM-BV. In MOTR+GPM-BV, higher agreement on strong alliance tended to predict lower symptomatic distress. Patient- and therapist-rated alliances were temporally congruent, but congruence did not predict outcome. Addressing the relationship needs of patients may partly exert its salutary effect by increasing agreement between patients' and therapists' experience of the alliance
Center of mass and relative motion in time dependent density functional theory
It is shown that the exchange-correlation part of the action functional
in time-dependent density functional theory , where
is the time-dependent density, is invariant under the
transformation to an accelerated frame of reference , where is an arbitrary
function of time. This invariance implies that the exchange-correlation
potential in the Kohn-Sham equation transforms in the following manner:
. Some of the
approximate formulas that have been proposed for satisfy this exact
transformation property, others do not. Those which transform in the correct
manner automatically satisfy the ``harmonic potential theorem", i.e. the
separation of the center of mass motion for a system of interacting particles
in the presence of a harmonic external potential. A general method to generate
functionals which possess the correct symmetry is proposed
Nominal Unification of Higher Order Expressions with Recursive Let
A sound and complete algorithm for nominal unification of higher-order
expressions with a recursive let is described, and shown to run in
non-deterministic polynomial time. We also explore specializations like nominal
letrec-matching for plain expressions and for DAGs and determine the complexity
