Heterogeneous Convergence
We use U.S. county-level data containing 3,058 cross-sectional observations and 41 conditioning variables to study economic growth and explore possible heterogeneity in growth determination across 32 individual states. Using a 3SLS-IV estimation method, we find that all statistically significant convergence rates (for 32 individual states) are above 2 percent, with an average of 8.1 percent. For 7 states the convergence rate can be rejected as identical to at least one other state’s convergence rate with 95 percent confidence. Convergence rates are negatively correlated with initial income. The size of government at all levels of decentralization is either unproductive or negatively correlated with growth. Educational attainment has a non-linear relationship with growth. The size of the finance, insurance and real estate, and entertainment industries are positively correlated with growth, while the size of the education industry is negatively correlated with growth. Heterogeneity in the effects of balanced growth path determinants across individual states is harder to detect than in convergence rates.Economic Growth, Conditional Convergence, County Level Data
Sigma Convergence Versus Beta Convergence: Evidence from U.S. County-Level Data
This note outlines (i) why σ-convergence may not accompany β-convergence; (ii) cites evidence of β-convergence in the U.S.; (iii) demonstrates that σ-convergence does not hold across the U.S., or within most U.S. states; and (iv) demonstrates the robustness of this finding to increases in mean income. Giant shot noise from Majorana zero modes in topological trijunctions
The clear-cut experimental identification of Majorana bound states in
transport measurements still poses experimental challenges. We here show that
the zero-energy Majorana state formed at a junction of three topological
superconductor wires is directly responsible for giant shot noise amplitudes,
in particular at low voltages and for small contact transparency. The only
intrinsic noise limitation comes from the current-induced dephasing rate due to
multiple Andreev reflection processes
Heterogeneity in Convergence Rates and Income Determination across U.S. States: Evidence from County-Level Data
We utilize county-level data to explore growth determination in the U.S. and possible heterogeneity in growth determination across individual states. The data includes over 3,000 cross-sectional observations and 39 demographic control variables. We use a consistent two stage least squares estimation procedure. (We report OLS estimates as well.) The estimated convergence rate across the U.S. is about 7 percent per year – higher than the 2 percent normally found with OLS in cross-country, U.S. state, and European region samples. Estimated convergence rates for 32 individual states are above 2 percent with an average of 8.1 percent. For 29 states the convergence rate is above 2 percent with 95 percent confidence. For seven states the convergence rate can be rejected as identical to at least one other state’s convergence rate with 95 percent confidence. In examining the determinants of balanced growth path heights, we find that government at all levels of decentralization is negatively correlated with economic growth. Educational attainment of a population has a non-linear relationship with economic growth according to our estimates: growth is positively related to high-school degree attainment, seemingly unrelated to obtaining some college education, and then positively related to four-year degree or more attainment. Also, finance, insurance and real estate industry and entertainment industry are positively correlated with growth, while education industry is negatively correlated with growth. Different steady states for spin currents in noncollinear multilayers
We find there are at least two different steady states for transport across
noncollinear magnetic multilayers. In the conventional one there is a
discontinuity in the spin current across the interfaces which has been
identified as the source of current induced magnetic reversal; in the one
advocated herein the spin torque arises from the spin accumulation transverse
to the magnetization of a magnetic layer. These two states have quite different

AdS-Carroll Branes
Coset methods are used to determine the action of a co-dimension one brane
(domain wall) embedded in (d+1)-dimensional AdS space in the Carroll limit in
which the speed of light goes to zero. The action is invariant under the
non-linearly realized symmetries of the AdS-Carroll spacetime. The
Nambu-Goldstone field exhibits a static spatial distribution for the brane with
a time varying momentum density related to the brane's spatial shape as well as
the AdS-C geometry. The AdS-C vector field dual theory is obtained.Comment: 47 page
A three-dimensional viscous flow analysis for the helicopter tip vortex generation problem
The tip vortex flow field occurring in the vicinity of the tip region of a a helicopter rotor blade is a very complicated three-dimensional, viscous flow phenomenon. The details of the flow in the tip region can have a major effect in determining the generated rotor noise and can significantly affect the performance and dynamic loading of the rotor blade. The three-dimensional viscous subsonic tip vortex generation processes is investigated by a numerical procedure which allows spatial forward-marching integration, utilizing flow approximations from the velocity-decomposition approach of Briley and McDonald. The approach has been applied to compute the laminar and turbulent tip vortex flows for a constant thickness slab airfoil with a square tip, a constant thickness slab airfoil with a half round tip and a NACA 0012 airfoil with a half round tip. The basic mechanism of the tip vortex generation process as well as the prediction of vortex appearance, strength and secondary flow shown by the calculations are in qualitative agreement with experimental results
How Do Consumers Use Nutrition Labels on Food Products in the United States?
This study examined how consumers use food labels in the United States. Based on the results from the cluster analysis, eight nutrition label questions from the Health and Diet Survey fell into 2 categories of label usage: for shopping or for dietary decisions. Survey respondents reported equal or more consideration of nutrition-label information for dietary choices than for shopping decisions in 2008 compared with prior survey years. Female consumers, frequent label users, well-educated, consumers aged 50 to 59, or consumers with any health issues were significantly more likely to use food labels for all kinds of purposes than their corresponding counterparts
Subharmonic gap structure in short ballistic graphene junctions
We present a theoretical analysis of the current-voltage characteristics of a
ballistic superconductor-normal-superconductor (SNS) junction, in which a strip
of graphene is coupled to two superconducting electrodes. We focus in the
short-junction regime, where the length of the strip is much smaller than
superconducting coherence length. We show that the differential conductance
exhibits a very rich subharmonic gap structure which can be modulated by means
of a gate voltage. On approaching the Dirac point the conductance normalized by
the normal-state conductance is identical to that of a short diffusive SNS
