Power-law distributions and Levy-stable intermittent fluctuations in stochastic systems of many autocatalytic elements
A generic model of stochastic autocatalytic dynamics with many degrees of
freedom is studied using computer simulations. The time
evolution of the 's combines a random multiplicative dynamics at the individual level with a global coupling through a
constraint which does not allow the 's to fall below a lower cutoff given
by , where is their momentary average and is a
constant. The dynamic variables are found to exhibit a power-law
distribution of the form . The exponent
is quite insensitive to the distribution of the random factor
, but it is non-universal, and increases monotonically as a function
of . The "thermodynamic" limit, N goes to infty and the limit of decoupled
free multiplicative random walks c goes to 0, do not commute:
for any finite while (which is the common range
in empirical systems) for any positive . The time evolution of exhibits intermittent fluctuations parametrized by a (truncated)
L\'evy-stable distribution with the same index . This
non-trivial relation between the distribution of the 's at a given time
and the temporal fluctuations of their average is examined and its relevance to

Thermodynamic Description of the Relaxation of Two-Dimensional Euler Turbulence Using Tsallis Statistics
Euler turbulence has been experimentally observed to relax to a
metaequilibrium state that does not maximize the Boltzmann entropy, but rather
seems to minimize enstrophy. We show that a recent generalization of
thermodynamics and statistics due to Tsallis is capable of explaining this
phenomenon in a natural way. The maximization of the generalized entropy
for this system leads to precisely the same profiles predicted by the
Restricted Minimum Enstrophy theory of Huang and Driscoll. This makes possible
the construction of a comprehensive thermodynamic description of Euler

A self-consistent treatment of non-equilibrium spin torques in magnetic multilayers
It is known that the transfer of spin angular momenta between current
carriers and local moments occurs near the interface of magnetic layers when
their moments are non-collinear. However, to determine the magnitude of the
transfer, one should calculate the spin transport properties far beyond the
interface regions. Based on the spin diffusion equation, we present a
self-consistent approach to evaluate the spin torque for a number of layered
structures. One of the salient features is that the longitudinal and transverse
components of spin accumulations are inter-twined from one layer to the next,
and thus, the spin torque could be significantly amplified with respect to
treatments which concentrate solely on the transport at the interface due to
the presence of the much longer longitudinal spin diffusion length. We conclude
that bare spin currents do not properly estimate the spin angular momentum
transferred between to the magnetic background; the spin transfer that occurs
at interfaces should be self-consistently determined by embedding it in our
globally diffuse transport calculations.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figure
Magneto-transport in a quantum network: Evidence of a mesoscopic switch
We investigate magneto-transport properties of a shaped three-arm
mesoscopic ring where the upper and lower sub-rings are threaded by
Aharonov-Bohm fluxes and , respectively, within a
non-interacting electron picture. A discrete lattice model is used to describe
the quantum network in which two outer arms are subjected to binary alloy
lattices while the middle arm contains identical atomic sites. It is observed
that the presence of the middle arm provides localized states within the band
of extended regions and lead to the possibility of switching action from a high
conducting state to a low conducting one and vice versa. This behavior is
justified by studying persistent current in the network. Both the total current
and individual currents in three separate branches are computed by using
second-quantized formalism and our idea can be utilized to study magnetic
response in any complicated quantum network. The nature of localized
eigenstates are also investigated from probability amplitudes at different
sites of the quantum device.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figure
Nonlinear excitations in CsNiF3 in magnetic fields perpendicular to the easy plane
Experimental and numerical studies of the magnetic field dependence of the
specific heat and magnetization of single crystals of CsNiF3 have been
performed at 2.4 K, 2.9 K, and 4.2 K in magnetic fields up to 9 T oriented
perpendicular to the easy plane. The experimental results confirm the presence
of the theoretically predicted double peak structure in the specific heat
arising from the formation of nonlinear spin modes. The demagnetizing effects
are found to be negligible, and the overall agreement between the data and
numerical predictions is better than reported for the case when the magnetic
field was oriented in the easy plane. Demagnetizing effects might play a role
in generating the difference observed between theory and experiment in previous
work analyzing the excess specific heat using the sine-Gordon model.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Inequality of opportunity in the land of opportunities : 1968-2001
We measure inequality of opportunity for earnings acquisition in the U.S. between 1968 and 2001. Following recent theories of social justice, earnings determinants are divided into two parts: Circumstances, which are characteristics outside individual control and effort representing factors impacting earnings but under individuals’ responsibility. Equality of opportunity requires that inequality of circumstances must be corrected while differences of effort must remain unaltered. Circumstances are represented by parental education and occupation, ethnic origin, place of birth and age. Effort is modeled with schooling choices and labour supply decisions. Using the PSID from 1968 to 2001, we provide two alternative assessments of inequality of opportunity using counterfactual distributions. The statistical framework is semi-parametric and builds on duration models. Finally, we conclude that inequality of opportunity represents between 20 and 43% of earnings inequality, but decreases all over the period reaching around 18% in 2001
Cardiovascular safety of celecoxib in acute myocardial infarction patients: a nested case-control study
The objective was to measure the impact of exposure to coxibs and non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID) on morbidity and mortality in older patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). A nested case-control study was carried out using an exhaustive population-based cohort of patients aged 66 years and older living in Quebec (Canada) who survived a hospitalization for AMI (ICD-9 410) between 1999 and 2002. The main variables were all-cause and cardiovascular (CV) death, subsequent hospital admission for AMI, and a composite end-point including recurrent AMI or CV death. Conditional logistic regressions were used to estimate the risk of mortality and morbidity. A total of 19,823 patients aged 66 years and older survived hospitalization for AMI in the province of Quebec between 1999 and 2002. After controlling for covariables, the risk of subsequent AMI and the risk of composite end-point were increased by the use of rofecoxib. The risk of subsequent AMI was particularly high for new rofecoxib users (HR 2.47, 95% CI 1.57–3.89). No increased risk was observed for celecoxib users. No increased risk of CV death was observed for patients exposed to coxibs or NSAIDs. Patients newly exposed to NSAIDs were at an increased risk of death (HR 2.22, 95% CI 1.30–3.77) and of composite end-point (HR 2.28, 95% CI 1.35–3.84). Users of rofecoxib and NSAIDs, but not celecoxib, were at an increased risk of recurrent AMI and of composite end-point. Surprisingly, no increased risk of CV death was observed. Further studies are needed to better understand these apparently contradictory results
Subleading-twist effects in single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a longitudinally polarized hydrogen target
Single-spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive production of charged pions in
deep-inelastic scattering from transversely and longitudinally polarized proton
targets are combined to evaluate the subleading-twist contribution to the
longitudinal case. This contribution is significantly positive for (\pi^+)
mesons and dominates the asymmetries on a longitudinally polarized target
previously measured by \hermes. The subleading-twist contribution for (\pi^-)
mesons is found to be small
