Firm Size and R&D Intensity: A Re-Examination
Using data from the Federal Trade Commission's Line of Business Program and survey measures of technological opportunity and appropriability conditions, this paper finds that overall firm size has a very small, statistically in- significant effect on business unit R & D intensity when either fixed industry effects or measured industry characteristics are taken into account. Business unit size has no effect on the R & D intensity of business units that perform R & D, but it affects the probability of conducting R & D. Business unit and firm size jointly explain less than one per cent of the variance in R & D intensity; industry effects explain nearly half the variance.
Cost-Reducing and Demand-Creating R&D With Spillovers
This paper analyzes R&D policies when the returns to cost-reducing and demand-creating R&D are imperfectly appropriable and market structure is endogenous. Previous characterizations of appropriability are generalized to permit the possibility that own and rival R&D are imperfect substitutes. We also describe how. equilibrium expenditures on process and product R&D, as well as equilibrium market structure, depend on technological opportunities and spillovers. In contrast to previous work, diminished appropriability does not necessarily reduce R&D expenditures. For example, under some conditions, an increase in the extent of process (product) spillovers will lead to an increase in product (process) R&D. We estimate several variants of the model using manufacturing line of business data and data from a survey of R&D executives.

Fluidized bed silicon deposition from silane
A process and apparatus for thermally decomposing silicon containing gas for deposition on fluidized nucleating silicon seed particles is disclosed. Silicon seed particles are produced in a secondary fluidized reactor by thermal decomposition of a silicon containing gas. The thermally produced silicon seed particles are then introduced into a primary fluidized bed reactor to form a fluidized bed. Silicon containing gas is introduced into the primary reactor where it is thermally decomposed and deposited on the fluidized silicon seed particles. Silicon seed particles having the desired amount of thermally decomposed silicon product thereon are removed from the primary fluidized reactor as ultra pure silicon product. An apparatus for carrying out this process is also disclosed
Hard Scattering in the M-Theory Dual for the QCD String
Conventional superstring amplitudes in flat space exhibits exponential fall
off at wide angle in contrast to the power law behavior found in QCD. It has
recently been argued by Polchinski and Strassler that this conflict can be
resolved via String/Gauge duality. They carried out their analysis in terms of
strings in a deformed background. On the other hand, an equally valid
approach to the String/Gauge duality for 4-d QCD is based on M-theory in a
specific Black Hole deformation of . We show that a very
natural extension to this phenomenologically interesting M-theory background
also gives the correct hard scattering power laws. In the Regge limit we extend
the analysis to show the co-existence of both the hard BFKL-like Pomeron and

Phase behaviour of a model of colloidal particles with a fluctuating internal state
Colloidal particles are not simple rigid particles, in general an isolated
particle is a system with many degrees of freedom in its own right, e.g., the
counterions around a charged colloidal particle.The behaviour of model
colloidal particles, with a simple phenomenological model to account for these
degrees of freedom, is studied. It is found that the interaction between the
particles is not pairwise additive. It is even possible that the interaction
between a triplet of particles is attractive while the pair interaction is
repulsive. When this is so the liquid phase is either stable only in a small

Search for Nucleon Decays induced by GUT Magnetic Monopoles with the MACRO Experiment
The interaction of a Grand Unification Magnetic Monopole with a nucleon can
lead to a barion-number violating process in which the nucleon decays into a
lepton and one or more mesons (catalysis of nucleon decay). In this paper we
report an experimental study of the effects of a catalysis process in the MACRO
detector. Using a dedicated analysis we obtain new magnetic monopole (MM) flux
upper limits at the level of for
, based on the search for
catalysis events in the MACRO data. We also analyze the dependence of the MM
