Equation of state for hard square lattice gases
A simple equation of state for a lattice gas of hard squares of side length
is presented. Comparing to the Monte Carlo simulations, the new
equation of state is found to be quite accurate for the disordered fluid phase
The Rosetteless gene controls development in the choanoflagellate S. rosetta.
The origin of animal multicellularity may be reconstructed by comparing animals with one of their closest living relatives, the choanoflagellate Salpingoeca rosetta. Just as animals develop from a single cell-the zygote-multicellular rosettes of S. rosetta develop from a founding cell. To investigate rosette development, we established forward genetics in S. rosetta. We find that the rosette defect of one mutant, named Rosetteless, maps to a predicted C-type lectin, a class of signaling and adhesion genes required for the development and innate immunity in animals. Rosetteless protein is essential for rosette development and forms an extracellular layer that coats and connects the basal poles of each cell in rosettes. This study provides the first link between genotype and phenotype in choanoflagellates and raises the possibility that a protein with C-type lectin-like domains regulated development in the last common ancestor of choanoflagellates and animals
Kinetic Inflation in Stringy and Other Cosmologies
An inflationary epoch driven by the kinetic energy density in a dynamical
Planck mass is studied. In the conformally related Einstein frame it is easiest
to see the demands of successful inflation cannot be satisfied by kinetic
inflation alone. Viewed in the original Jordan-Brans-Dicke frame, the obstacle
is manifest as a kind of graceful exit problem and/or a kind of flatness
problem. These arguments indicate the weakness of only the simplest
formulation. {}From them can be gleaned directions toward successful kinetic
inflation.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX, CITA-94-2
A Two Energy Gap Preformed-Pair Scenario For the Cuprates: Implications for Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy
We show how, within a preformed pair scenario for the cuprate pseudogap, the
nodal and antinodal responses in angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy
necessarily have very different temperature dependences. We examine the
behavior and the contrasting dependences for a range of temperatures both
below and above . Our calculations are based on a fully microscopic
-matrix approach for addressing pairing correlations in a regime where the
attraction is stronger than BCS and the coherence length is anomalously short.
Previously, the distinct nodal and anti-nodal responses have provided strong
support for the "two-gap scenario" of the cuprates in which the pseudogap
competes with superconductivity. Instead, our theory supports a picture in
which the pseudogap derives from pairing correlations, identifying the two gap
components with non-condensed and condensed pairs. It leads to reasonably good
agreement with a range of different experiments in the moderately underdoped
regime and we emphasize that here there is no explicit curve fitting. Ours is a
microscopic rather than a phenomenological theory. We briefly address the more
heavily underdoped regime in which the behavior is more complex.Comment: 12 pages; 10 figure
Charge reversal of colloidal particles
A theory is presented for the effective charge of colloidal particles in
suspensions containing multivalent counterions. It is shown that if colloids
are sufficiently strongly charged, the number of condensed multivalent
counterion can exceed the bare colloidal charge leading to charge reversal.
Charge renormalization in suspensions with multivalent counterions depends on a
subtle interplay between the solvation energies of the multivalent counterions
in the bulk and near the colloidal surface. We find that the effective charge
is {\it not} a monotonically decreasing function of the multivalent salt
concentration. Furthermore, contrary to the previous theories, it is found that
except at very low concentrations, monovalent salt hinders the charge reversal.
This conclusion is in agreement with the recent experiments and simulations
Comment on "Gravity Waves, Chaos, and Spinning Compact Binaries"
In this comment, I argue that chaotic effects in binary black hole inspiral
will not strongly impact the detection of gravitational waves from such
systems.Comment: 1 page, comment on gr-qc/991004
