An Analysis of the environmental content of Las Vegas Strip hotels

This study examines the environmental content of hotel properties websites. The central question of this study is whether Las Vegas Strip properties have gone green, or plan to go green. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to examine the frequency of the environmental content of twenty-three Las Vegas Strip hotelsโ€™ websites as well as five upcoming hotel projects and one hotel expansion project on the Strip. The twenty-eight hotels are all located along Las Vegas Boulevard, also known as the Strip. All properties examined have over two thousand rooms each. The goal is to determine how prevalent and important the environment is to these Strip properties and if the verbiage on their websites matches their actions. Each hotelโ€™s website will be thoroughly examined to determine what they have posted as far as their current and future environmental plans and policies with respect to the following four areas: management support and concerns for the environment; environmental planning; environmental leadership qualities internally and externally; and validation or certification of environmental programs (Jose et al 2007). If there are no results from the website search, the corporationโ€™s annual reports will be examined for such content. The next step after that is to conduct interviews with employees, managers, and executives of the hotels

Intra-seasonal oscillations of convection over southern Africa

This work examines intra-seasonal rainfall variability over the summer rainfall region of South Africa. Spectral analysis of a precipitation minus evaporation index (P-E) compiled from 16 rainfall stations in the western Transvaal region of South Africa has shown that two dominant spectral peaks occur in the water budget or convection as identified by an outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) index and P-E index. A longer 40-60 day oscillation or Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) and a shorter 20-30 day ISO are identified. The interaction between the Rossby waves of the mid-latitudes and the MJO of tropics appears to be the main cause of the 20-30 day ISO operating over southern Africa. Hovmoller analysis at 10ยฐ S and 40ยฐ S has shown that four modes exist in the propagation and oscillatory characteristics of various anomalies. Eastward and westward propagation is noted as well as standing wave patterns and "flip-flop" modes where anomalies alternate between positive and negative across the latitude band with time. The composite analysis revealed a tropically initiated signal of the 20-30 day ISO in the water vapour flux (WVF) anomaly field where strong easterly WVF vectors are noted between the equator and 10ยฐS and between 40ยฐ E and 80ยฐ E. Strong convergence of water vapour occurs during the wet phase of the 20-30 day ISO over the south-western Indian Ocean and together with strong ridging of the South Atlantic Anticyclone (SAA) causes the south-easterly advection of moisture from the southern Mozambique Channel and over the warm Agulhas Current into South Africa. Post-wet phase anomaly composites do not show much similarity with pre-cursor anomaly composites. This implies that the 20-30 day ISO may be a half cycle of 40-60 days which is consistent with the MJO. However, it is felt that 20-30 day ISO's affecting the southern African region alternate in intensity within the period of the MJO

Evaluation of cystatin C for the detection of chronic kidney disease in cats

    Get PDF
BackgroundSerum cystatin C (sCysC) and urinary cystatin C (uCysC) are potential biomarkers for early detection of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats. An in-depth clinical validation is required. ObjectivesTo evaluate CysC as a marker for CKD in cats and to compare assay performance of the turbidimetric assay (PETIA) with the previously validated nephelometric assay (PENIA). AnimalsNinety cats were included: 49 CKD and 41 healthy cats. MethodsSerum CysC and uCysC concentrations were prospectively evaluated in cats with CKD and healthy cats. Based on plasma exo-iohexol clearance test (PexICT), sCysC was evaluated to distinguish normal, borderline, and low GFR. Sensitivity and specificity to detect PexICT<1.7mL/min/kg were calculated. Serum CysC results of PENIA and PETIA were correlated with GFR. Statistical analysis was performed using general linear modeling. ResultsCats with CKD had significantly higher meanSD sCysC (1.4 +/- 0.5mg/L) (P<.001) and uCysC/urinary creatinine (uCr) (291 +/- 411mg/mol) (P<.001) compared to healthy cats (sCysC 1.0 +/- 0.3 and uCysC/uCr 0.32 +/- 0.97). UCysC was detected in 35/49 CKD cats. R-2 values between GFR and sCysC or sCr were 0.39 and 0.71, respectively (sCysC or sCr=+GFR+epsilon). Sensitivity and specificity were 22 and 100% for sCysC and 83 and 93% for sCr. Serum CysC could not distinguish healthy from CKD cats, nor normal from borderline or low GFR, in contrast with sCr. ConclusionSerum CysC is not a reliable marker of reduced GFR in cats and uCysC could not be detected in all CKD cats

How Green the Desert? Examining the Enviormental Policies of Las Vegas Strip Hotels

    Get PDF
This study analyzed the websites of major Las Vegas Strip hotels, examined their corporate financial reports, and conducted two in-depth telephone interviews with hotel managers, all with regard to their โ€œgreenโ€ (pro-environmental) policies. The study found a distinct lack of evidence to support assertions that these properties had truly โ€œgone greenโ€ in their daily operations. Thus, although the hotels might actually have been engaged in green procedures, they did not express environmental policy in their corporate websites or financial reports. Several possible reasons for this apparent duality are suggested

Sequestration of Muscarinic Cholinergic Receptors in Permeabilized Neuroblastoma Cells

The feasibility of using a permeabilized preparation of human SH-SY-5Y neuroblastoma cells for studies of muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR) sequestration has been evaluated. Exposure of cells permeabilized with digitonin, streptolysin-O, or the ฮ‘-toxin from Staphylococcus aureus to oxotremorine-M (Oxo-M) for 30 min resulted in a 25โ€“30% reduction in the number of cell surface mAChRs, as monitored by the loss of N [ 3 H]methyl- scopolamine ([ 3 H]NMS) binding sites. The corresponding value for intact cells was 40%. For cells permeabilized with 20 ฮœ M digitonin, the Oxo-M-mediated reduction in [ 3 H]NMS binding was time ( t 1/2 โˆผ 5 min) and concentration (EC 50 โˆผ 10 ฮœ M ) dependent and was agonist specific (Oxo M > bethanechol = arecoline = pilocarpine). In contrast, no reduction in total mAChR number, as monitored by the binding of [ 3 H]quinuclidinyl benzilate, occurred following Oxo-M treatment. The loss of [ 3 H]NMS sites observed in the presence of Oxo-M was unaffected by omission of either ATP or Ca 2+ , both of which are required for stimulated phosphoinositide hydrolysis, but could be inhibited by the inclusion of guanosine 5โ€ฒ- O -(2-thiodiphosphate). mAChRs sequestered in response to Oxo-M addition were unmasked when the cells were permeabilized in the presence of higher concentrations of digitonin (80 ฮœ M ). The results indicate (a) that permeabilized SH-SY-5Y cells support an agonist-induced sequestration of mAChRs, the magnitude of which is โˆผ 65โ€“70% of that observed for intact cells, (b) that when internalized, mAChRs are located in a cellular compartment to which [ 3 H]NMS has only a limited access despite the removal of the plasma membrane barrier, and (c) that the production of phosphoinositide-derived second messengers is not a prerequisite for mAChR sequestration.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/65736/1/j.1471-4159.1994.62051795.x.pd

Observational study of the association of first insulin type in uncontrolled type 2 diabetes with macrovascular and microvascular disease

    Get PDF

Aims: To compare the risk of vascular disease, HbA1c and weight change, between first prescribed insulins in people with type 2 diabetes.

Methods: People included in THIN United Kingdom primary care record database who began insulin (2000โ€“2007) after poor control on oral glucose-lowering agents (OGLD) were grouped by the number of OGLDs in their treatment regimen immediately before starting insulin (n = 3,485). Within OGLD group, Cox regression compared macrovascular (all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome and stroke) and microvascular disease (peripheral neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy) between insulin type (basal, pre-mix or Neutral Protamine Hagedorn, NPH) while ANCOVAs compared haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and weight change.

Results: Mean follow-up was 3.6 years. Rates of incident macrovascular events were similar when basal insulin was compared to pre-mix or NPH, adjusted hazard ratio versus basal: pre-mix 1.08 (95% CI 0.73, 1.59); NPH 1.00 (0.63, 1.58) after two OGLDs, and pre-mix 0.97 (0.46, 2.02); NPH 0.77 (0.32, 1.86) after three OGLDs. An increased risk of microvascular disease in NPH versus basal after 3 OGLDs, adjusted hazard ratio1.87 (1.04, 3.36), was not seen after two agents or in comparisons of basal and pre-mix. At one year, after two OGLDs, weight increase was less with basal compared with pre-mix. After three OGLDs, mean HbA1c had reduced less in basal versus pre-mix or NPH at 6โ€“8 and at 9โ€“11 months, and versus pre-mix at 12โ€“14 months.

Conclusion: We found no difference in the risk of macrovascular events between first insulins in the medium term when started during poor glycaemia control. The increased risk of microvascular events with NPH warrants further study. In certain groups, first use of basal insulin was associated with less gain in weight and decrease in HbA1c compared to other insulins.</p&gt
