International audienceAbstractIn this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of Nosema spp. in honeybees of Turkey. For this aim, adult honeybee (Apis mellifera) samples were collected from 1621 colonies within 95 apiaries located in 22 provinces of Turkey. Samples were examined microscopically. In case of positivity, spore identification was done by multiplex PCR. At the end of microscopic examination, Nosema spp. spores were detected in 7 out of 22 provinces (31.8 %), and 16 out of 95 colonies (16.8 %) that represent 1621 colonies. According to PCR results, 1 out of 16 isolates (6.25 %) was Nosema apis, and 15 out of 16 isolates (93.75 %) were Nosema ceranae. The result of our study indicated that N.ceranae is the dominant species in Turkey

Aim: This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of evening primrose oil (EPO) on colonic anastomosis. Methods: Sixty rats with colonic anastomosis were randomly divided into six groups. EPO and 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) were administered at doses of 5 g/kg/day and 20 mg/kg/day, respectively. Group 1 served as sham control. The rats in Group 2 (EPO) received EPO (14 days preoperatively), in Group 3 (Extended EPO) received EPO (14 days preoperatively and 7 days postoperatively), in Group 4 (5-FU) received intraperitoneally 5-FU (5 days preoperatively), in Group 5 (5-FU+EPO) received EPO (14 days preoperatively), and 5-FU (5 days preoperatively), in Group 6 (5-FU+ extended EPO) received EPO (14 days preoperatively and 7 days postoperatively) and 5-FU (5 days preoperatively). Histopathological examination, bursting pressure, and hydroxyproline content were used for evaluation. Results: Significant differences were found between the Groups 1, 2, and 3 and Groups 4, 5, and 6 in bursting pressures. Polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMNL) and lymphocyte infiltration was significantly less in group 3, compared to the control and group 2. The least PMNL infiltration was in group 6 compared to groups 4 and 5. The hydroxyproline level was different in group 3 compared to the control and group 2. Furthermore, groups 5 and 6 were different compared to group 4. Conclusion: EPO had favorable effects on colonic anastomosis even in groups where 5-FU was used

Aim To investigate the efficacy and safety of the single-step surgery in elderly patients with obstructive colorectal cancer. Methods All patients who underwent single-step surgery and primary anastomosis for obstructive colorectal cancer in the period between January 2012 December 2017 were evaluated in this study. The patients were divided into two groups: younger than 65 (Group Young) and older than 65 (Group Old). Demographic data, American Society of Anesthesiologists scores (ASA) scores, comorbidities, preoperative albumin levels, type of surgery, postoperative morbidity and mortality, pathological stages, and overall survival rates were investigated. Results A total of 89 patients were included: 49 (54%) were older than 65 (Group Old). In Group Old, the mean age was 75 (65-97), of which 28 (58.3%) were males. There were 41 patients younger than 65 (Group Young) with the mean age of 52.6 (41-64 years of age), of which 21 (51.2%) were males. There was no difference between groups according to albumin level. There was no statistical difference between two groups according to tumour localization, pathological stage and type of surgery, as well as according to surgical complications. The median overall survival rate was 11 months in both groups (0-66) (p=0.320). Conclusion Meticulous preparation of older patients (correction of anaemia, electrolyte levels and pH ) paves the road for successful surgeries, including single-step resection and primary anastomosis

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a new generation product of blood sourced material. Its major advantages are ease of preparation, and that blood contents are not changed by biochemical processing which reinforce the product’s autogenous nature. In our study, a 51 years-old male patient attending to our clinic with endodontic- periodontal intraosseous defect was treated with PRF membrane combined with autogenous bone graft in addition to endodontic treatment demonstrated successful results in hard and soft tissue healing.

High performance chromium (VI) removal from water by polyacrylonitrile-co-poly (2-ethyl hexylacrylate) and polyaniline nanoporous membranes

This article reports the chromium (VI) removal from water by preparing polyacrylonitrile-co-poly (2-ethyl hexylacrylate) (PAN(92)-co-P2EHA(8)) and polyaniline (PANI) nanoporous membranes at various PANI loadings. It was observed that chromium (VI) rejections of nanoporous membranes are highly concentration and pH dependent. Almost complete chromium removal (99.9%) with higher flux values (120-177 L m-2 h-1) was observed for nanoporous membranes. Moreover, nanoporous membranes were also demonstrated as fouling resistant. Total flux loss was low and a part was attributed to reversible flux loss, which cannot cause any permanent hysteresis and easily overcome with simple washing. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies were performed for identifying cross sectional morphology. It was pointed out that pore size should be small enough for filtration and optimized for higher flux but pores should be functionalized for rejection. Chemical structure, swelling ratios, sheet resistivity, and fracture morphologies of nanoporous membranes were reported. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 2012. (C) 2012 Society of Plastics Engineer
