    Compton Scattering from the Deuteron and Extracted Neutron Polarizabilities

    Differential cross sections for Compton scattering from the deuteron were measured at MAX-lab for incident photon energies of 55 MeV and 66 MeV at nominal laboratory angles of 45∘45^\circ, 125∘125^\circ, and 135∘135^\circ. Tagged photons were scattered from liquid deuterium and detected in three NaI spectrometers. By comparing the data with theoretical calculations in the framework of a one-boson-exchange potential model, the sum and difference of the isospin-averaged nucleon polarizabilities, Ξ±N+Ξ²N=17.4Β±3.7\alpha_N + \beta_N = 17.4 \pm 3.7 and Ξ±Nβˆ’Ξ²N=6.4Β±2.4\alpha_N - \beta_N = 6.4 \pm 2.4 (in units of 10βˆ’410^{-4} fm3^3), have been determined. By combining the latter with the global-averaged value for Ξ±pβˆ’Ξ²p\alpha_p - \beta_p and using the predictions of the Baldin sum rule for the sum of the nucleon polarizabilities, we have obtained values for the neutron electric and magnetic polarizabilities of Ξ±n=8.8Β±2.4\alpha_n= 8.8 \pm 2.4(total) Β±3.0\pm 3.0(model) and Ξ²n=6.5βˆ“2.4\beta_n = 6.5 \mp 2.4(total) βˆ“3.0\mp 3.0(model), respectively.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, revtex.     Differential cross-sections for quasi-free Ο€0\pi^0 photoproduction from the proton and neutron bound in the deuteron have been measured for EΞ³=200βˆ’400E_\gamma= 200 - 400 MeV at ΞΈΞ³lab=136.2∘\theta^{\rm lab}_\gamma = 136.2^\circ usind the Glasgow photon tagger at MAMI, the Mainz 48 cm βˆ…\varnothing Γ—\times 64 cm NaI(Tl) photon detector and the G\"ottingen SENECA recoil detector. For the proton measurements made with both liquid deuterium and liquid hydrogen targets allow direct comparison of "free" Ο€0\pi^0 photoproduction cross-sections as extracted from the bound proton data with experimental free cross sections which are found to be in reasonable agreement below 320 MeV. At higher energies the "free" cross sections extracted from quasifree data are significantly smaller than the experimental free cross sections and theoretical predictions based on multipole analysis. For the first time, "free" neutron cross sections have been extracted in the Ξ”\Delta-region. They are also in agreement with the predictions from multipole analysis up to 320 MeV and significantly smaller at higher photon energies

    Measuring Compton scattered photons and recoil neutrons in coincidence, quasi-free Compton scattering by the neutron has been investigated at MAMI (Mainz) at thetaΞ³lab=136otheta^{lab}_\gamma=136^o in an energy range from 200 to 400 MeV. From the data a polarizability difference of Ξ±nβˆ’Ξ²n=9.8Β±3.6(stat)βˆ’1.1+2.1(syst)Β±2.2(model)\alpha_n - \beta_n = 9.8 \pm 3.6(stat)^{+2.1}_{-1.1}(syst)\pm 2.2(model) in units of 10βˆ’4fm310^{-4}fm^3 has been determined. In combination with the polarizability sum Ξ±n+Ξ²n=15.2Β±0.5\alpha_n+\beta_n= 15.2\pm 0.5 deduced from photo absorption data, the neutron electric and magnetic polarizabilities, Ξ±n=12.5Β±1.8(stat)βˆ’0.6+1.1(syst)Β±1.1(model)\alpha_n=12.5\pm 1.8(stat)^{+1.1}_{-0.6}(syst)\pm 1.1(model) and Ξ²n=2.7βˆ“1.8(stat)βˆ’1.1+0.6(syst)βˆ“1.1(model)\beta_n = 2.7\mp 1.8(stat)^{+0.6}_{-1.1}(syst)\mp 1.1(model), are obtained

    Low-Energy Compton Scattering of Polarized Photons on Polarized Nucleons

    The general structure of the cross section of Ξ³N\gamma N scattering with polarized photon and/or nucleon in initial and/or final state is systematically described and exposed through invariant amplitudes. A low-energy expansion of the cross section up to and including terms of order Ο‰4\omega^4 is given which involves ten structure parameters of the nucleon (dipole, quadrupole, dispersion, and spin polarizabilities). Their physical meaning is discussed in detail. Using fixed-t dispersion relations, predictions for these parameters are obtained and compared with results of chiral perturbation theory. It is emphasized that Compton scattering experiments at large angles can fix the most uncertain of these structure parameters. Predictions for the cross section and double-polarization asymmetries are given and the convergence of the expansion is investigated.
