    Search for squarks in events with jets, hadronically decaying Ļ„ -lepton, and missing transverse momentum in the final state in proton-proton collision at āˆšs = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Signal regions have been designed for search of squarks in events with jets, at least one hadronically decaying Ļ„ -lepton, and missing transverse momentum in the final state. The analysis is based on the LHC Run 2 dataset at āˆšs = 13 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 139 f bāˆ’1. Two independent final states are considered, one with one Ļ„ -lepton in the final state and another with two or more Ļ„ -lepton in the final state. A simplified model of squark pair production is considered. An exclusion contour plot has been produced using only SR and with experimental systematic uncertainties. From the preliminary result of the exclusion contour plot, squark masses up to around 1700 GeV are expected to be excluded for low LSP masses at 95% confidence level, and LSP masses up to 800 GeV are expected to be excluded for squark masses around 1250 GeV.Masteroppgave i fysikkPHYS399MAMN-PHY

    An examination of stock market performance in China using accounting information

    This study aims to examine the usefulness of China accounting information in reflecting the stock returns in China stock markets and to recognize the significant factors that are possibly related to the stock returns in A shares and B shares respectively.Peoplesā€™ Republic of China accounting standard (PRC accounting standard) is used for A shares whereas International Accounting Standard (IAS) is used for B shares. By comparing the two accounting standards, we found that the definition of some items and concepts of the financial statements are different. Consequently, the values of the financial ratios are varied. In order to recognize the significant factors in A shares and B shares, the means of factor analysis was adopted to sort out important factors from a large number of financial ratios. For A shares, profitability, interest efficiency, liquidity, asset efficiency and earning power are found to be significant factors. While for B shares, the significant factors are profitability, asset efficiency, liquidity, operating efficiency and earning on interest expense. After running the regression with A shares daily returns and B shares daily returns to their respective significant factors, profitability, asset efficiency and earning power are found to be significant at 5% level in A shares and only profitability is found to be significant at 1% level for B shares

    Urological Effects of Ketamine Abuse

    Emerging evidence has shown that long-term and chronic ketamine use or abuse can lead to damages in the urinary tract, a spectrum of clinical presentations from mild irritative lower tract symptoms to painful gross haematuria and renal damages. First reported by a Hong Kong group of urologists in 2007, the phenomenon has since then been identified worldwide. Most of the ketamine abusers were adolescents and young adults, and the symptomatology resembled those of chemical cystitis or interstitial cystitis. Endoscopic features of ulcerative cystitis, radiological features of thickened and contracted bladder wall with or without obstruction to upper urinary tract, and histopathological features of inflammation and fibrosis and urothelial metaplasia changes were described. With increasing clinical experience in managing this group of patients, clinical pathways and medical and surgical treatment options have been developed. Animal studies on the effects of ketamine exposure on the urinary system have also been conducted to help us understand the underlying pathophysiology for this distinct entity

    Comparing the effects of visibility of different neighborhood greenery settings on the preference ratings and noise annoyance responses to road traffic noises

    The impact of visual environment on human noise perceptions has always been under scrutiny. Two consecutive sets of laboratory experiments were performed for studying the effect of visual perceptions of different percentages of sea, greenery, and/or road views on noise-induced annoyance responses as well as preference ratings. Both experiments were carried out in a room purposely constructed inside an anechoic chamber to mimic the living room setting of a dwelling in Hong Kong. Video clips were projected consecutively onto the exterior window panel of the living room to simulate neighborhood views containing different percentages of sea, greenery and road. 82 and 58 participants were successfully administered in two experiments. Each participant was presented with 11 video clips and requested to respond to a series of questions regarding perceived noise annoyance and view preferences after presentation of individual clips. The responses collected from each experiment were employed to formulate ordered logit models to predict the probability of evoking a high annoyance response. Findings indicated that participants tended to prefer the presence of sea rather than that of either mountain or trees in views containing a trafficking road. Views containing sea would produce an attenuating effect on noise annoyance while views containing road would produce an aggravating effect. However, the size of the effects did not vary between 0% and 30% sea, or between 30% and 60% road contained in a view. Views containing dense greenery at a close distance would aggravate noise annoyance irrespective of form. However, when the percentage of greenery increased from 30% to 60%, the noise annoyance attenuating effect increased in the case of wooded mountain but decreased in the case of the more transparent tree clumps

    Risk stratification of sudden cardiac death in asymptomatic female Brugada syndrome patients: A literature review

    Background and Objectives Risk stratification in Brugada syndrome remains a difficult problem. Given the male predominance of this disease and their elevated risks of arrhythmic events, affected females have received less attention. It is widely known that symptomatic patients are at increased risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) than asymptomatic patients, while this might be true in the male population; recent studies have shown that this association might not be significant in females. Over the past few decades, numerous markers involving clinical symptoms, electrocardiographic (ECG) indices, and genetic tests have been explored, with several risk-scoring models developed so far. The objective of this study is to review the current evidence of clinical and ECG markers as well as risk scores on asymptomatic females with Brugada syndrome. Findings Gender differences in ECG markers, the yield of genetic findings, and the applicability of risk scores are highlighted. Conclusions Various clinical, electrocardiographic, and genetic risk factors are available for assessing SCD risk amongst asymptomatic female BrS patients. However, due to the significant gender discrepancy in BrS, the SCD risk amongst females is often underestimated, and there is a lack of research on female-specific risk factors and multiparametric risk scores. Therefore, multinational studies pooling female BrS patients are needed for the development of a gender-specific risk stratification approach amongst asymptomatic BrS patients

    TRPV4 mediates cell damage induced by hyperphysiological compression and regulates COX2/PGE2 in intervertebral discs

    Background Aberrant mechanical loading of the spine causes intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration and low back pain. Current therapies do not target the mediators of the underlying mechanosensing and mechanotransduction pathways, as these are poorly understood. This study investigated the role of the mechanosensitive transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4) ion channel in dynamic compression of bovine nucleus pulposus (NP) cells in vitro and mouse IVDs in vivo. Methods Degenerative changes and the expression of the inflammatory mediator cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2) were examined histologically in the IVDs of mouse tails that were dynamically compressed at a short repetitive hyperphysiological regime (vs sham). Bovine NP cells embedded in an agarose-collagen hydrogel were dynamically compressed at a hyperphysiological regime in the presence or absence of the selective TRPV4 antagonist GSK2193874. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) release, as well as phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), were analyzed. Degenerative changes and COX2 expression were further evaluated in the IVDs of trpv4-deficient mice (vs wild-type; WT). Results Dynamic compression caused IVD degeneration in vivo as previously shown but did not affect COX2 expression. Dynamic compression significantly augmented LDH and PGE2 releases in vitro, which were significantly reduced by TRPV4 inhibition. Moreover, TRPV4 inhibition during dynamic compression increased the activation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 (ERK) MAPK pathway by 3.13-fold compared to non-compressed samples. Trpv4-deficient mice displayed mild IVD degeneration and decreased COX2 expression compared to WT mice. Conclusions TRPV4 therefore regulates COX2/PGE2 and mediates cell damage induced by hyperphysiological dynamic compression, possibly via ERK. Targeted TRPV4 inhibition or knockdown might thus constitute promising therapeutic approaches to treat patients suffering from IVD pathologies caused by aberrant mechanical stress

    SummaryThis report examined the characteristics and trends of dialysis and renal transplant patients among the resident population of Hong Kong who were managed by hospitals or dialysis centers of the Hospital Authority, and accounted for approximately 95% of all patients receiving renal replacement therapies (RRTs) in the territory. Patients receiving RRTs solely in the private sector were not included in this report. Data trends from 1996 to 2011 are presented. In 2011, 1115 new patients were accepted into RRT programs, and the incident rate was 157 patients per million populations (pmp). An increasing trend was noted. The incident rate was 95.1Ā pmp at the commencement of the annual report in 1996. The point prevalence on December 31, 2012 was 8197 with a prevalence rate of 1152.5Ā pmp. Overall, there were 3573 patients (43.6%) on peritoneal dialysis (PD) and 1246 patients (15.2%) on hemodialysis (HD), and 3378 patients (41.2%) were living with a functioning renal transplant. The PD/HD ratio was 74.2:25.8. The ā€œPD Firstā€ policy was continued. The overall mortality rate among RRT patients was 9.95 patients per 100 patient-years exposed. There was a decreasing trend in mortality among PD patients. Infection and cardiovascular complications were the most common causes of death. Renal transplant was the modality with the best survival rates. The 5Ā years cumulative patient survival rate for patients on transplant treatment was 89.6%, whereas the corresponding patient survival rates for PD and HD patients were 50.7% and 55.7%, respectively. More than 70% of RRT patients with reports on rehabilitation were active and had normal daily activities

    Incident heart failure and myocardial infarction in sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 versus dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor users

    Objectives To compare the rates of major cardiovascular adverse events in sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2I) and dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP4I) users in a Chinese population. Background SGLT2I and DPP4I are increasingly prescribed for type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. However, few population-based studies are comparing their effects on incident heart failure or myocardial infarction. Methods This was a population-based retrospective cohort study using the electronic health record database in Hong Kong, including type 2 diabetes mellitus patients receiving either SGLT2I or DPP4I between January 1st, 2015, to December 31st, 2020. Propensity-score matching was performed in a 1:1 ratio based on demographics, past comorbidities, non-SGLT2I/DPP4I medications with nearest-neighbor matching (caliper=0.1). Univariable and multivariable Cox models were used to identify significant predictors for new onset heart failure, new onset myocardial infarction, cardiovascular mortality, and all-cause mortality. Sensitivity analyses with competing risk models and multiple propensity score matching approaches were conducted. Subgroup age and gender analyses were presented. Results A total of 41994 patients (58.89% males, median admission age at 58 years old, interquartile rage [IQR]: 51.2-65.3) were included in the study cohorts with a median follow-up duration of 5.6 years (IQR: 5.32-5.82). After adjusting for significant demographics, past comorbidities, medication prescriptions and biochemical results, SGLT2I users have a significantly lower risk for myocardial infarction (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.34, 95% confidence interval [CI]: [0.28, 0.41], P < 0.0001), cardiovascular mortality (HR: 0.53, 95% CI: [0.38, 0.74], P = 0.0002) and all-cause mortality (HR: 0.21, 95% CI: [0.18, 0.25], P= 0.0001) under multivariable Cox regression. However, the risk for heart failure is comparable (HR: 0.87, 95% CI: [0.73, 1.04], P= 0.1343). Conclusions SGLT2 inhibitors are protective against adverse cardiovascular events compared to DPP4I. The prescription of SGLT2I is preferred especially for males and patients aged 65 or older to prevent cardiovascular risks
