Ion-scale spectral break of solar wind turbulence at high and low beta
The power spectrum of magnetic fluctuations in the solar wind at 1 AU displays a break between two power laws in the range of spacecraft-frame frequencies 0.1 to 1 Hz. These frequencies correspond to spatial scales in the plasma frame near the proton gyroradius ρi and proton inertial length di. At 1 AU it is difficult to determine which of these is associated with the break, since [Formula: see text] and the perpendicular ion plasma beta is typically β⊥i∼1. To address this, several exceptional intervals with β⊥i≪1 and β⊥i≫1 were investigated, during which these scales were well separated. It was found that for β⊥i≪1 the break occurs at di and for β⊥i≫1 at ρi, i.e., the larger of the two scales. Possible explanations for these results are discussed, including Alfvén wave dispersion, damping, and current sheets

An experimental study on a motion sensing system for sports training
In sports science, motion data collected from athletes is
used to derive key performance characteristics, such as stride length
and stride frequency, that are vital coaching support information. The
sensors for use must be more accurate, must capture more vigorous
events, and have strict weight and size requirements, since they must
not themselves affect performance. These requirements mean each
wireless sensor device is necessarily resource poor and yet must be
capable of communicating a considerable amount of data, contending
for the bandwidth with other sensors on the body. This paper analyses
the results of a set of network traffic experiments that were designed
to investigate the suitability of conventional wireless motion sensing
system design � which generally assumes in-network processing - as
an efficient and scalable design for use in sports training
Comments on Neutrino Tests of Special Relativity
We point out that the assumption of Lorentz noninvariance examined recently
by Coleman and Glashow leads to neutrino flavor oscillations which are
phenomenologically equivalent to those obtained by assuming the neutrinos
violate the principle of equivalence. We then comment on the limits on Lorentz
noninvariance which can be derived from solar, atmospheric, and accelerator

Wave Propagation in Gravitational Systems: Completeness of Quasinormal Modes
The dynamics of relativistic stars and black holes are often studied in terms
of the quasinormal modes (QNM's) of the Klein-Gordon (KG) equation with
different effective potentials . In this paper we present a systematic
study of the relation between the structure of the QNM's of the KG equation and
the form of . In particular, we determine the requirements on in
order for the QNM's to form complete sets, and discuss in what sense they form
complete sets. Among other implications, this study opens up the possibility of
using QNM expansions to analyse the behavior of waves in relativistic systems,
even for systems whose QNM's do {\it not} form a complete set. For such
systems, we show that a complete set of QNM's can often be obtained by
introducing an infinitesimal change in the effective potential
Perturbative Analysis of Universality and Individuality in Gravitational Waves from Neutron Stars
The universality observed in gravitational wave spectra of non-rotating
neutron stars is analyzed here. We show that the universality in the axial
oscillation mode can be reproduced with a simple stellar model, namely the
centrifugal barrier approximation (CBA), which captures the essence of the
Tolman VII model of compact stars. Through the establishment of scaled
co-ordinate logarithmic perturbation theory (SCLPT), we are able to explain and
quantitatively predict such universal behavior. In addition, quasi-normal modes
of individual neutron stars characterized by different equations of state can
