Students Perception Of Homework Assignments And What Influences Their Ideas

    Get PDF
Authors have researched the effects of homework, but few studies have delved into the idea of students attitude towards homework. Consequently, students perception of homework, the principal participants, remains largely unknown. Students experience in homework that started as early as elementary school has influenced their ideas of homework. Trying to get students to complete their homework is one of the most frequent and frustrating behavior problems for educators. The purpose of this study is to understand students perception of homework assignments and identify factors that influenced their ideas. The participants for this research project were 180 undergraduate students enrolled in select Principles of Finance and Corporate Finance classes (encompassing three semesters and nine classes) at Robert Morris University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Results of the study summarize students opinions of homework assignments while in high school, college, and for the specific course in which the questionnaire was administered. Tests of significance revealed seven (of the nine classes) significant differences between the actual number of times homework was handed in and the pre-conceived number of times students estimated homework assignments would be completed on time

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between course design and predictor variables: motivation, satisfaction, and success for students enrolled in the hybrid Principles of Finance course.  The participants for this research project were 117 undergraduate students (encompassing 6 semesters) at Robert Morris University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  The results indicate that course design does influence the predictor variables.  (A hybrid course combines face-to-face classroom instruction with computer-based learning.  These courses move a portion of course learning online and, as a result, reduce the amount of classroom time needed.

A Peer-Mediated Social Network to Increase Social Interactions for a Student with Autism Using Augmentative Communication

Social competency is a primary deficit for individuals with autism. Developing peer networks to support individuals with autism has been proven as an effective social skills strategy. This study focused on developing a peer network within a public-school setting to promote increased social communication between a seven-year old student with autism and his typically developing peers. A single-subject multiple baseline design was utilized to analyze the effects of the peer network intervention across three settings. Dependent variables included frequency of social initiations and social responses of the target and network peers. All sessions were video-recorded, and data were collected for all participants. In addition to the quantitative data, the teacher-researcher maintained a research journal and transcribed the video clips, (one session per intervention phase) to provide additional measurable and observable evidence to support the correlated qualitative data. Upon implementation of the peer network, preliminary analysis suggests the target student increased his social initiations from a total of 12 during baseline to 36 and an increase in responses from 29 to 548, respectively. The peer network participants initiated 1349 times and responded 392 times during intervention

    An Adaptive Hilbert-Huang Transform System

    Get PDF
This thesis presents a system which can be used to generate Intrinsic Mode Functions and the associated Hilbert spectrum resulting from techniques based on the Empirical Mode Decomposition as pioneered by N. E. Huang at the end of the 20th century. Later dubbed the Hilbert-Huang Transform by NASA, the process of decomposing data manually through repetitive detrending and subtraction followed by applying the Hilbert transform to the results was presented as a viable alternative to the wavelet transform which was gaining traction at the time but had shown significant limitations. In the last 20 years, the Hilbert-Huang Transform has received a lot of attention, but that attention has been miniscule relative to the amount of attention received by wavelet transformation. This is, in part, due to the limitations of the Empirical Mode Decomposition and also in part due to the difficulty in developing a theoretical basis for the manner in which the Empirical Mode Decomposition works. While the question of theoretical foundations is an important and tricky one, this thesis presents a system that breaks many of the previously known limits on band-width resolution, mode mixing, and viable decomposable frequency range relative to sampling frequency of the Empirical Mode Decomposition. Many recent innovations do not simply improve on N. E. Huang’s algorithm, but rather provide new approaches with different decompositional properties. By choosing the best technique at each step, a superior total decomposition can be arrived at. Using the Hilbert-Huang Transform itself during the decomposition as a guide as suggested by R. Deering in 2005, the final HHT can show distinct improvements. The AHHT System utilizes many of the properties of various Empirical Mode Decomposition techniques from literature, includes some novel innovations on those techniques, and then manages the total decomposition in an adaptive manner. The Adaptive Hilbert-Huang Transform System (AHHT) is demonstrated successfully on many different artificial signals, many with varying levels of noise down to -5dB SNR, as well as on an electrocardiogram and for comparison with a surface electromyographic study which found biopotential frequency-shifting associated with the fatigue of fast-twitch muscle fibers

Occupational Therapy and Health Promotion for Families Experiencing Homelessness: A Community-Wide Approach

    Get PDF
Families experiencing homelessness often face poor mental and physical health outcomes. Some scholars and service providers partially attribute family health outcomes to the negative impact of the social determinants of health. The social determinants of health emerge from a variety of factors in the socioecological model, a tiered model outlining the hierarchy of public health systems, making the social determinants difficult to address. To explore occupational therapy’s potential contribution to addressing these poor health outcomes, the authors centered a doctoral capstone around the question of what occupational therapy’s role would be in addressing the needs of families experiencing homelessness. A systematic process was employed that included a comprehensive needs assessment and the use of a matrix method to capture the data and layer in theoretical considerations. Findings revealed that the social determinants of health negatively impact occupational engagement and health outcomes for families experiencing homelessness. To address this health disparity, a proposal was created to incorporate occupational therapy into service provision. The proposal focuses on creating programming, using participatory action research, creating a new assessment tool, identifying community-wide key performance indicators for health and occupational engagement for families experiencing homelessness, and incorporating an occupational therapy perspective throughout the service community

Etiological and gender perspectives of anxiety disorder development

    Get PDF
This paper presents a comprehensive, integrative review of research on the biological, environmental, and cognitive etiology of anxiety. Causes of generalized anxiety disorder, specific and social phobias, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder are discussed, as is the role of gender in anxiety development. Biological research concerning genetic heritability, neurobiological structure, and neurotransmitter functioning are reviewed. Environmental factors such as aversive events, parental interactions, environmental control, and learning are discussed, followed by research on cognitive distortions, attribution style, attention biases, and catastrophic cognitions. The review finds evidence of an interaction between biological, environmental and cognitive variables, as well as a mediating influence of gender. Research is still needed to determine the processes and interactions by which anxiety develops and the reasons for gender differences in disorder prevalence. The review shows that research and analysis have been inadequate in making connections between each of the biological, environmental, and cognitive factors. Although research has clearly indicated that each of the aforementioned variables influence anxiety disorder development, most studies have examined only one aspect of anxiety etiology, disregarding the impact of other potential causes

Study of the treatment of Lake Michigan water using direct filtration

    Get PDF
The direct filtration process can be an effective and economical alternative to the conventional sequence of operations used for water clarification. In most cases the process has been used to treat water with a consistently low turbidity. Its effectiveness in other cases, e.g., treating water from Lake Michigan, will require a thorough understanding of process behavior and control techniques. Pilot plant studies were performed using a constant-rate dual-media filter preceded by a pretreatment reactor in which a cationic polyelectrolyte coagulant was added. For each filter design and set of operating conditions there is an optimum distribution of deposit within the filter bed at run termination which maximizes the water production per filter run. It was determined that the pretreatment conditions (the polyelectrolyte concentration and the mixing intensity and duration) can be used to maximize the water production per filter run and maintain an acceptable effluent turbidity. The pretreatment conditions determine the rate of clogging front advancement in the filter bed, which, in conjunction with the terminal headloss, determines the distribution of deposit within the bed at run termination.U.S. Department of the InteriorU.S. Geological SurveyOpe

Increasing by approximately 32% a year globally over the last five years, wind energy has proven to be a clean, abundant, and cost effective renewable source of energy. Wind energy is an important part of the strategy to replace fossil fuel electricity generation. Fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas currently generate over 70% of the power consumed in North America. The dramatic increase in the cost for fossil fuels and the growing pressure on the world's nations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have combined to position wind power as the world’s fastest growing new source of electricity generation. This case study discusses a major producer of America’s wind energy, Wisconsin Energy Corporation (WEC), and their strategies and commitments to alternative energy and a more sustainable future. The company’s “triple bottom line” including economic, social, and environmental benefits will also be evaluated
