    Use of LARS system for the quantitative determination of smoke plume lateral diffusion coefficients from ERTS images of Virginia

    A technique for measuring smoke plume of large industrial sources observed by satellite using LARSYS is proposed. A Gaussian plume model is described, integrated in the vertical, and inverted to yield a form for the lateral diffusion coefficient, Ky. Given u, wind speed; y sub l, the horizontal distance of a line of constant brightness from the plume symmetry axis a distance x sub l, downstream from reference point at x=x sub 2, y=0, then K sub y = u ((y sub 1) to the 2nd power)/2 x sub 1 1n (x sub 2/x sub 1). The technique is applied to a plume from a power plant at Chester, Virginia, imaged August 31, 1973 by LANDSAT I. The plume bends slightly to the left 4.3 km from the source and estimates yield Ky of 28 sq m/sec near the source, and 19 sq m/sec beyond the bend. Maximum ground concentrations are estimated between 32 and 64 ug/cu m. Existing meteorological data would not explain such concentrations

    Optics with Quantum Hall Skyrmions

    A novel type of charged excitation, known as a Skyrmion, has recently been discovered in quantum Hall systems with filling factor near \nu = 1. A Skyrmion -- which can be thought of as a topological twist in the spin density of the electron gas -- has the same charge as an electron, but a much larger spin. In this review we present a detailed theoretical investigation of the optical properties of Skyrmions. Our results provide means for the optical detection of Skyrmions using photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. We first consider the optical properties of Skyrmions in disordered systems. A calculation of the luminescence energy reveals a special optical signature which allows us to distinguish between Skyrmions and ordinary electrons. Two experiments to measure the optical signature are proposed. We then turn to the optical properties of Skyrmions in pure systems. We show that, just like an ordinary electron, a Skyrmion may bind with a hole to form a Skyrmionic exciton. The Skyrmionic exciton can have a lower energy than the ordinary magnetoexciton. The optical signature of Skyrmions is found to be a robust feature of the PL spectrum in both disordered and pure systems.Comment: 31 pages, LaTex, 11 eps figures. ijmpb style file included.     Concentration dependence of the transition temperature in metallic spin glasses

    The dependence of the transition temperature TgT_g in terms of the concentration of magnetic impurities cc in spin glasses is explained on the basis of a screened RKKY interaction. The two observed power laws, Tg cT_g ~ c at low cc and Tg c2/3T_g ~ c^{2/3} for intermediate cc, are described in a unified approach.Comment: 4 page

    Solitary Waves of Planar Ferromagnets and the Breakdown of the Spin-Polarized Quantum Hall Effect

    A branch of uniformly-propagating solitary waves of planar ferromagnets is identified. The energy dispersion and structures of the solitary waves are determined for an isotropic ferromagnet as functions of a conserved momentum. With increasing momentum, their structure undergoes a transition from a form ressembling a droplet of spin-waves to a Skyrmion/anti-Skyrmion pair. An instability to the formation of these solitary waves is shown to provide a mechanism for the electric field-induced breakdown of the spin-polarized quantum Hall effect.Comment: 5 pages, 3 eps-figures, revtex with epsf.tex and multicol.st

    Magnetic field generation in Higgs inflation model

    We study the generation of magnetic field in Higgs-inflation models where the Standard Model Higgs boson has a large coupling to the Ricci scalar. We couple the Higgs field to the Electromagnetic fields via a non- renormalizable dimension six operator suppressed by the Planck scale in the Jordan frame. We show that during Higgs inflation magnetic fields with present value 10610^{-6} Gauss and comoving coherence length of 100kpc100 kpc can be generated in the Einstein frame. The problem of large back-reaction which is generic in the usual inflation models of magneto-genesis is avoided as the back-reaction is suppressed by the large Higgs-curvature coupling.Comment: 10 pages, RevTeX

    A two-dimensional, two-electron model atom in a laser pulse: exact treatment, single active electron-analysis, time-dependent density functional theory, classical calculations, and non-sequential ionization

    Owing to its numerical simplicity, a two-dimensional two-electron model atom, with each electron moving in one direction, is an ideal system to study non-perturbatively a fully correlated atom exposed to a laser field. Frequently made assumptions, such as the ``single active electron''- approach and calculational approximations, e.g. time dependent density functional theory or (semi-) classical techniques, can be tested. In this paper we examine the multiphoton short pulse-regime. We observe ``non-sequential'' ionization, i.e.\ double ionization at lower field strengths as expected from a sequential, single active electron-point of view. Since we find non-sequential ionization also in purely classical simulations, we are able to clarify the mechanism behind this effect in terms of single particle trajectories.     Positive youth development in swimming: clarification and consensus of key psychosocial assets

    The purpose of this study was to gain a more cohesive understanding of the assets considered necessary to develop in young swimmers to ensure both individual and sport specific development. This two stage study involved (a) a content analysis of key papers to develop a list of both psychosocial skills for performance enhancement and assets associated with positive youth development, and (b) in-depth interviews involving ten expert swim coaches, practitioners and youth sport scholars. Five higher order categories containing seventeen individual assets emerged. These results are discussed in relation to both existing models of positive youth development and implications for coaches, practitioners and parents when considering the psychosocial development of young British swimmers

    Evaluation of Etiquette Strategies to Adapt Feedback In Affect-Aware Tutoring

    The purpose of this research is to investigate how to mitigate user frustration and improve task performancein the context of human-computer interaction (HCI). Even though user frustration plays a role in manyaspects of HCI and studies have looked into the consequences of frustration in various fields, the ways tomitigate frustration are less deeply examined. Once the system has the ability to understand and includeuser emotions as factors in HCI, the interaction between the user and the computer system could be adaptedif the computers are able to modify its behavior with users in appropriate ways to further joint performance.Specifically, a preliminary study was conducted to explore the task performance, motivation, andconfidence implications of changing the interaction between the human and the computer via differentetiquette strategies. Participants solved a total of twenty mathematics problems under different frustrationcondition with feedback given in different styles of etiquette. Changing etiquette strategies in tutoring ledto changes in performance, motivation, and confidence. The most effective etiquette strategies changedwhen users were frustrated.
