    The need for robust critique of arts and health research: Dance‐movement therapy, girls, and depression

    We examine a highly cited randomized controlled trial on dance-movement therapy with adolescent girls with mild depression and examine its treatment in 14 evidence reviews and meta-analyses of dance research. We demonstrate substantial limitations in the trial which seriously undermine the conclusions reached regarding the effectiveness of dance movement therapy in reducing depression. We also show that the dance research reviews vary substantially in their treatment of the study. Some reviews provide a positive assessment of the study and take its findings at face value without critical commentary. Others are critical of the study, identifying significant limitations, but showing marked differences in Cochrane Risk of Bias assessments. Drawing on recent criticisms of systematic reviewing and meta-analysis, we consider how reviews can be so variable and discuss what is needed to improve the quality of primary studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses in the field of creative arts and health

    Effects of group singing versus group music listening on hospitalized children and adolescents with mental disorders: A pilot study

    Background: There is an emerging view that music-related interventions (MuRI) may play an important role for youth with mental disorders. Here, we assessed the potential neuroendocrine (cortisol), immune (IgA) and psychological (mood state, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), well-being) efficacy of a brief program of MuRI (group singing versus group music listening) in children and adolescents with mental disorders in a clinical setting. Methods: We performed this observational pilot study with 17 patients (aged 11–18; 11 female) admitted to the Department for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/PMU Salzburg, Austria between March 2015 and April 2016. Patients participated in either a singing program or a music listening program, delivered through five daily, consecutive 45-minute sessions in one week. Outcomes: Saliva samples for cortisol and IgA, and subjective measures of mood were taken daily, pre- and post-MuRI. HRQOL and well-being were measured pre- and post-5-day-program of MuRI. The program in singing led to a significantly larger mean drop in cortisol than in music listening (mean difference: −0·32; 95% CI −0·57 to −0·07), while listening led to a significantly higher mean positive change in the dimension calmness (mean difference: −2·66, 95%CI −4·99 to −0·33) than singing. Moreover, singing was associated with an improvement in HRQOL, and listening with an improvement in well-being. Interpretation: Our preliminary findings suggest that MuRI may provide benefits for children and adolescents with mental disorders. The differences in psychobiological responses to singing and music listening invite further investigations. A larger, suitably powered study is now needed to provide a precise estimate of the effects of MuRI for mental health promotion, both on psychological and biological experiences.     Psychosoziale Belastungen bei inhaftierten Mädchen und Jungen

    Fragestellung: Längsschnittstudien zeigten, dass kriminelles Verhalten von Jugendlichen häufig mit einem Umfeld bezogener und familiärer Belastung einhergeht, insbesondere bei Mädchen. In dieser Studie haben wir den psychosozialen Hintergrund von jugendlichen Inhaftierten erhoben und geschlechtsspezifisch ausgewertet. Methodik: Das Multidimensional Clinical Screening Inventory for delinquent juveniles (MCSI) wurde angewandt, um Schulanamnese, psychiatrische Anamnese, den familiären Hintergrund sowie belastende Erlebnisse und das Deliktmotiv zu erheben. Die endgültige Stichprobe umfasste 294 Jugendliche (46 Mädchen und 248 Jungen). Ergebnisse: Innerfamiliärer Missbrauch/Verlust wurde von 91 % (Mädchen) und 79 % (Jungen) angegeben. 76 % (Mädchen) und 88 % (Jungen) gaben ein Schulproblem an. 57 % (Mädchen) und 29 % (Jungen) gaben psychische Vorbehandlung an. Signifikant höhere Prävalenzraten fanden sich bei Mädchen bezüglich der elterlichen Trennung, Inhaftierungen der Mutter, bei Missbrauch/Verlust und psychischer Vorbehandlung. Signifikant mehr Mädchen als Jungen gaben zugleich schulische Probleme und Verlust- sowie Missbrauchserlebnisse an (65.2 % vs. 46.4 %, χ² = 5.51, df = 1, p < .05). Schlussfolgerung: Inhaftierte Jugendliche, insbesondere Mädchen, waren und sind multiplen psychosozialen Belastungen ausgesetzt. Es besteht daher die Notwendigkeit, Präventionsarbeit in psychosozial belasteten Familien zu leisten. Auch in der Behandlung in und nach der Haft muss das Umfeld im Rahmen sozialpsychiatrisch-familienzentrierter als auch forensischer Intervention berücksichtigt werden

    The need for robust critique of arts and health research: the treatment of the Gene Cohen et al. (2006) paper on singing, wellbeing and health in subsequent evidence reviews

    Background This paper considers weaknesses in a study by Cohen et al. (2006) on the impacts of community singing on health. These include high demand characteristics, lack of attention to attrition, flawed statistical analysis, and measurement. Nevertheless, the study is uncritically cited, in evidence reviews, with findings taken at face value. Methods Google Scholar, SCOPUS and BASE citation functions for Cohen et al. identified 32 evidence reviews in peer-reviewed journals. Eleven of these reviews, published between 2010 and 2023, focused on creative arts interventions. Results We demonstrate limitations in the Cohen et al. research which undermine the conclusions they reach regarding the health benefits of group singing. Subsequent evidence reviews take the findings at face value and offer little critical commentary. Discussion We consider what is needed to improve evidence reviews in the field of creative arts and health research. Conclusions A more robust approach is needed in reviewing research evidence in the field of arts and health. The Cohen et al. paper is not suitable for inclusion in future evidence review

    Detained Male Adolescent Offender's Emotional, Physical and Sexual Maltreatment Profiles and Their Associations to Psychiatric Disorders and Criminal Behaviors

    The objective of the present study was to analyse patterns of emotional, physical and sexual maltreatment in detained male juvenile offenders using latent class analysis (LCA). The association of maltreatment related LCA profiles with psychopathology and criminal behaviors was also studied. LCA based on the items of the Child Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) assessing childhood emotional, physical, and sexual abuse was performed in a sample of 260 male adolescent offenders (mean age = 16.5years, SD = 1.29years). Chi square tests and general linear models were performed to assess the associations of CTQ profiles with categorical interview-based psychiatric disorders, dimensional Youth Self-Report problem scales, and officially registered offenses. LCA suggested a three class solution: (1) a no/mild trauma (NM; 76%) (2) emotional and physical trauma (EP; 18%) and (3) emotional, physical, and sexual trauma (EPS; 8%). The classes EP and EPS were related to a variety of psychiatric disorders and self-reported mental health problems. Furthermore, EPS showed higher presence of a subsequent re-incarceration compared to NM. A majority of sexually abused juveniles also experienced emotional and physical abuse reflecting gravely disturbed family systems. Multiple abuse in childhood was associated with a broad variety of disorders including externalizing disorders and repeated criminal offending. Such findings indicate that trauma assessment is also relevant in externalizing youth. A comprehensive treatment approach for detained boys with multiple abuse experiences is required targeting both mental health needs and the reduction of criminal behaviors
