Getting published: group support for academic librarians
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to offer an effective model for increasing professionals' competence, enthusiasm and success in writing and publishing. Design/methodology/approach - Recent articles on writing groups in the field of library and information science are reviewed and a case study of a group at RMIT University Library is presented. The authors were the facilitator and group members who were librarians, most with relative inexperience in research, writing, presenting, and getting published. A self-rating confidence survey was created to establish developmental priorities which were then addressed through input from experts, practical application and reflection, and constructive advice and support from group members. Group effectiveness and outcomes were evaluated at mid- and end-point review meetings, through a post-intervention confidence survey and by tracking publication output. Findings - The group became a cohesive, task-focused and productive team. A post-intervention confidence survey evidenced improvements on all survey items at a team level. Each member affirmed that they had gained substantial knowledge of writing, presentation and research techniques and understanding of the publication process. Publication output increased over the benchmark year of 2010, and in 2011 and 2012 exceeded initial targets. Practical implications - The model presented offers a practical and effective approach to increasing competence and output in writing, presenting, research, and getting published and can be easily adopted by others. A millimeter-wave antireflection coating for cryogenic silicon lenses
We have developed and tested an antireflection (AR) coating method for
silicon lenses at cryogenic temperatures and millimeter wavelengths. Our
particular application is a measurement of the cosmic microwave background. The
coating consists of machined pieces of Cirlex glued to the silicon. The
measured reflection from an AR coated flat piece is less than 1.5% at the
design wavelength. The coating has been applied to flats and lenses and has
survived multiple thermal cycles from 300 to 4 K. We present the manufacturing
method, the material properties, the tests performed, and estimates of the loss
that can be achieved in practical lenses
The timed barium swallow and its relationship to symptoms in achalasia: Analysis of surface area and emptying rate
BACKGROUND: Timed barium swallow (TBS) is used to objectively measure response following achalasia therapy; however, findings can be discordant with symptoms. We hypothesized that measurement of surface area of the residual barium column would improve its utility in measuring outcome. METHODS: In a single-center cohort, achalasia patients undergoing therapy between September 2015-2016 who had TBS were included. Four metrics of emptying were studied: Post-therapy residual barium (a) absolute height and (b) surface area and percentage reduction in (c) residual height (%H) and (d) surface area (%SA) compared to pretherapy. Metrics were evaluated against symptom response (Eckardt score). KEY RESULTS: Twenty-four achalasics (median age 43 year; 13 males) were included; 14 received pneumatic dilatation, and 10 had peroral endoscopic myotomy. Treatment resulted in significant reduction in median Eckardt score (7 to 1; P = .03), mean residual barium column height (14.7 ± 8.7 to 7.9 ± 6.0 cm; P = .01) and surface area (52.7 ± 43.5 to 24.5 ± 23.6 cm2 ; P = .02). There were 4 (17%) initial non-responders (Eckardt > 3). % SA was best at discriminating between responders and non-responders (area under curve 0.85 ± 0.08; sensitivity 100%, specificity 80%). Concordance with symptomatic response following therapy was 83% when using 45% as the cutoff for surface area reduction compared to pretherapy. Eight patients whose static barium height was discordant with symptoms became concordant when % SA was used as a measure of response. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES: Change in barium surface area is a superior measure of esophageal emptying and better correlates with treatment response than the conventional 5-minute barium height in defining objective response to achalasia therapy
Composting paper and grass clippings with anaerobically treated palm oil mill effluent
Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the composting performance of anaerobically treated palm oil mill effluent (AnPOME) mixed with paper and grass clippings. Methods Composting was conducted using a laboratory scale system for 40 days. Several parameters were determined: temperature, mass reduction, pH, electrical conductivity, colour, zeta potential, phytotoxicity and final compost nutrients. Results The moisture content and compost mass were reduced by 24 and 18 %, respectively. Both final compost pH value and electrical conductivity were found to increase in value. Colour (measured as PtCo) was not suitable as a maturity indicator. The negative zeta potential values decreased from â12.25 to â21.80 mV. The phytotoxicity of the compost mixture was found to decrease in value during the process and the final nutrient value of the compost indicates its suitability as a soil conditioner. Conclusions From this study, we conclude that the addition of paper and grass clippings can be a potential substrate to be composted with anaerobically treated palm oil mill effluent (AnPOME). The final compost produced is suitable for soil conditioner
ACBAR: The Arcminute Cosmology Bolometer Array Receiver
We describe the Arcminute Cosmology Bolometer Array Receiver (ACBAR); a
multifrequency millimeter-wave receiver designed for observations of the Cosmic
Microwave Background (CMB) and the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect in clusters of
galaxies. The ACBAR focal plane consists of a 16-pixel, background-limited, 240
mK bolometer array that can be configured to observe simultaneously at 150,
220, 280, and 350 GHz. With 4-5' FWHM Gaussian beam sizes and a 3 degree
azimuth chop, ACBAR is sensitive to a wide range of angular scales. ACBAR was
installed on the 2 m Viper telescope at the South Pole in January 2001. We
describe the design of the instrument and its performance during the 2001 and

A Decolonial Critique of the Racialized âLocalwashingâ of Extraction in Central Africa
Responding to calls for increased attention to actions and reactions âfrom aboveâ within the
extractive industry, we offer a decolonial critique of the ways in which corporate entities and multinational institutions propagate racialized rhetoric of âlocalâ suffering, âlocalâ consultation, and âlocalâ fault for failure in extractive zones. Such rhetoric functions to legitimize extractive intervention within a set of practices that we call localwashing. Drawing from a decade of research on and along the Chad-Cameroon Oil Pipeline, we show how multi-scalar actors converged to assert knowledge of, responsibility for, and collaborations with âlocalâ people within a racialized politics of scale. These corporate representations of the racialized âlocalâ are coded through long-standing colonial tropes. We identify three interrelated and overlapping flexian elite rhetoric(s) and practices of racialized localwashing: (a) anguishing, (b) arrogating, and (c) admonishing. These elite representations of a racialized âlocalâ reveal diversionary efforts âfrom aboveâ to manage public opinion, displace blame for project failures, and domesticate dissent in a context of persistent scrutiny and criticism from international and regional advocates and activists
A compact and reconfigurable silicon nitride time-bin entanglement circuit
Photonic chip based time-bin entanglement has attracted significant attention
because of its potential for quantum communication and computation. Useful
time-bin entanglement systems must be able to generate, manipulate and analyze
entangled photons on a photonic chip for stable, scalable and reconfigurable
operation. Here we report the first time-bin entanglement photonic chip that
integrates time-bin generation, wavelength demultiplexing and entanglement
analysis. A two-photon interference fringe with an 88.4% visibility is measured
(without subtracting any noise), indicating the high performance of the chip.
Our approach, based on a silicon nitride photonic circuit, which combines the
low-loss characteristic of silica and tight integration features of silicon,
paves the way for scalable real-world quantum information processors.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
GEO 600 and the GEO-HF upgrade program: successes and challenges
The German-British laser-interferometric gravitational wave detector GEO 600
is in its 14th year of operation since its first lock in 2001. After GEO 600
participated in science runs with other first-generation detectors, a program
known as GEO-HF began in 2009. The goal was to improve the detector sensitivity
at high frequencies, around 1 kHz and above, with technologically advanced yet
minimally invasive upgrades. Simultaneously, the detector would record science
quality data in between commissioning activities. As of early 2014, all of the
planned upgrades have been carried out and sensitivity improvements of up to a
factor of four at the high-frequency end of the observation band have been
achieved. Besides science data collection, an experimental program is ongoing
with the goal to further improve the sensitivity and evaluate future detector
technologies. We summarize the results of the GEO-HF program to date and
discuss its successes and challenges
National review of school music education: Augmenting the diminished
This study included a literature review, call for submissions, site visits, national survey and curriculum mapping to determine the current quality and status of music education in Australian schools. It provides an examination of the challenges facing schools in providing music education and highlights opportunities for strengthening music education in schools
