Reading âWomen Donât Riotâ After the Riot: Creating a University-Prison Collaboration
We examine a case study of a collaboration between a University and a Womenâs Correctional Institution: an Inside Out college course that brings together incarcerated and traditional students. We analyze the creation of a class in the aftermath of a riot in the region and in the ongoing context of internal and external reforms. We provide specific examples of mistakes, lessons learned, and the impact of our pedagogical values and techniques, and provide links to our class materials. We emphasize communication between the institutions, from the students to instructors, among the instructors, and from instructors to students. In the classroom, we exploit our expertise and our non-expertise as learners together to break down perceived barriers. We also emphasize the value of self-care and recognition of all students as agentic. We conclude with a call for future research that attends to student agency and that examines who benefits from prison-university partnerships

Peruvian IDPs and the search for holistic transitional justice
Peruâs internal armed conflict (1980-2000) took place between the subversive Shining Path and state forces, causing the forced displacement of between half to one million people, mainly from indigenous groups. Approximately half of those people managed to return during the early nineties, however around 150,000 people remain displaced. These people would usually reside in marginal areas of the Peruvian capital, Lima, and other major Peruvian cities. Beyond displacement, they typically face economic limitations and their status as internally displaced persons (IDPs) makes their integration more difficult. While the Peruvian State has taken certain steps towards addressing the situation of IDPs, sixteen years after the conflict ended, a full solution remains elusive. The present blog post mainly seeks to critically analyse the Peruvian Stateâs actions handling the problems related to IDPs. Recommendations are also provided
Does Implicit Voting Matter? Coalitional Bargaining in EU the Legislative Process
This paper theorises how decision-makers in the EU legislative process reach consensual decisions and in which policy direction through a mechanism of âimplicit votingâ. I introduce spatial model coalitional bargaining using a utility function that incorporates decision-maker considerations of the policy gains they expect to obtain for an outcome and the policy concessions they will need to give to other decision-makers so as to have this outcome accepted. The model predicts the formation of a compact coalition where the differences among the distances between each decision-maker position and the coalitional position are less pronounced than in competing alternative coalitions. This coalition will be able to implement this policy position as the outcome of the legislative process. The empirical evaluation of the model with DEU for 44 proposals and 111 issues of EU legislative process shows that the compact coalition offers a good prediction of how consensus in arrived at in the EU, suggesting that implicit voting explains well how EU decisional actors make consensual decisions and the direction this consensus takes
Atomically resolved scanning force studies of vicinal Si(111)
Well-ordered stepped semiconductor surfaces attract intense attention owing
to the regular arrangements of their atomic steps that makes them perfect
templates for the growth of one- dimensional systems, e.g. nanowires. Here, we
report on the atomic structure of the vicinal Si(111) surface with 10 degree
miscut investigated by a joint frequency-modulation scanning force microscopy
(FM-SFM) and ab initio approach. This popular stepped surface contains 7 x
7-reconstructed terraces oriented along the Si(111) direction, separated by a
stepped region. Recently, the atomic structure of this triple step based on
scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images has been subject of debate. Unlike
STM, SFM atomic resolution capability arises from chemical bonding of the tip
apex with the surface atoms. Thus, for surfaces with a corrugated density of
states such as semiconductors, SFM provides complementary information to STM
and partially removes the dependency of the topography on the electronic
structure. Our FM-SFM images with unprecedented spatial resolution on steps
confirm the model based on a (7 7 10) orientation of the surface and reveal
structural details of this surface. Two different FM-SFM contrasts together
with density functional theory calculations explain the presence of defects,
buckling and filling asymmetries on the surface. Our results evidence the
important role of charge transfers between adatoms, restatoms, and dimers in
the stabilisation of the structure of the vicinal surface
Pinworms of the red howler monkey (Alouatta seniculus) in Colombia. Gathering the pieces of the pinworm-primate puzzle
Pinworms of primates are believed to be highly host specific parasites, forming co-evolutionary associations with their hosts. In order to assess the strength and reach of such evolutionary links, we need to have a broad understanding of the pinworm diversity associated with primates. Here, we employed an integrative taxonomic approach to assess pinworm diversity in red howler monkeys in Colombia. Molecular and morphological evidence validate the presence of at least four different species of Trypanoxyuris occurring in red howler monkeys: T. minutus, a widely distributed species, and three new species, T. seunimiii n. sp., T. kemuimae n. sp. and T. kotudoi n. sp. The mitochondrial COI gene and the 28S ribosomal gene were used for phylogenetic assessments through Bayesian inference. The three new species were morphologically distinct and formed reciprocally monophyletic lineages. Further molecular lineage subdivision in T. minutus and T. kotudoi n. sp. without morphological correspondence, suggests the potential scenario for the existence of cryptic species. Phylogenetic relationships imply that the different species of Trypanoxyuris occurring in each howler monkey species were acquired through independent colonization events. On-going efforts to uncover pinworm diversity will allow us to test the degree of host specificity and the co-phylogenetic hypothesis, as well as to further unravel the primate-pinworm evolutionary history puzzle
The bony manifestation of Rickets. A case report
This paper describes a case of the bony manifestation of Rickets. Although vitamin D deficiency has become less common, Rickets still is seen among the Eritrean pediatric population. Rickets is an entity in which mineralization is decreased at the level of the growth plates, resulting in growth retardation and delayed skeletal development. The patient was referred to our Out patient Department for deformities of the legs and growth disturbance, with his height far below the normal range. Bowing of long bones of the legs and cupping of the wrist metaphyseal region were the radiographic changes most evident. Although the primary management of rickets
is conservative, the orthopedistâs role can be crucial. The orthopedistâs responsibilities include establishing a diagnosis and treating osseous complications, such as fractures, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, and bowing of the extremities. Furthermore, the orchestration of care between the pediatrician and orthopedist is highlighted here.

Bromate determination by X-Ray fluorescence (XRF) to identify pre-baking potassium bromate addition in bread
Wavelength-dispersive x-ray fluorescence (WDXRF) was applied to determine bromate (Br) as an indication of pre-baking bromate addition in bread. The proposed methodology needed a minimum sample preparation procedure because it was carried out directly on solid samples. The calibration of Br in bread obtained showed low detection limit and high sensitivity to distinguish precisely Br concentrations greater than natural Br. The excellent performance of the present methodology would be useful to identify pre-baking bromation in bread, which can be used to help set up a programme to control bromation in bread. Application of this methodology to bakery control caused an important reduction of bromate use in province of Cordoba, Argentina.Fil: Perez, Roberto Daniel. Coalition Formation and Agenda Setting in EU Environmental Policy after the Enlargement
The eastern enlargement of the EU has greatly increased the heterogeneity in the configuration of preferences of European member states. This scenario was expected to significantly difficult the capacity of the legislative process to take decisions. However, the decision-making in the EU has shown a remarkable capacity of adaptation in the face of the entrance of new members. This article argues that this adaptation is indeed normal. I introduce a mixed model of coalitional bargaining and agenda setting which explains legislative decision making in the face of preference heterogeneity. The model shows how coalition formation incorporates the preference variations infused by new member states in surplus winning coalitions adopting moderate compromises and how the intervention of a supranational EP influences the final decision towards more advanced legislation. The application of the model to the area of environmental policy shows that under the conditions of preference heterogeneity of the enlargement context, the EU legislative process is likely to generate legislation at medium levels of policy change, appeasing the risk for deadlock but also restraining the introduction of more integrationist legislation.enlargement; environmental policy
Uncharted Waters: Should International Maritime Terrorism Be Included in the Jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court?
The International Criminal Court (ICC) lacks jurisdiction over international terrorism. Despite related academic literature, no academic publication discusses whether the ICC should have jurisdiction over international maritime terrorism. This deserves attention due to the increasing importance of this global phenomenon in the last few decades. Consequently, this Article considers whether international maritime terrorism should be included in the ICCâs jurisdiction. First, it discusses international maritime terrorism as a manifestation of the emerging international crime of international terrorism, examining i) whether there is an accepted or an emerging legal definition of international maritime terrorism, ii) whether international maritime terrorism is a serious threat to or attack against international peace and security, and iii) whether there is an emerging customary rule criminalizing international maritime terrorism. Then, the ICC lawâparticularly the Rome Statute, travaux prĂ©paratoires, and amendment proposalsâand the ICCâs practice on crimes committed by international terrorist groups or involving serious threats to maritime security are examined to determine the feasibility, advisability, or even necessity to incorporate international maritime terrorism into the Rome Statute. Finally, this Article argues for incorporation based on three main normative grounds: i) better protection of the marine environment (environmental security); ii) contribution towards filling important jurisdictional gaps concerning maritime zones; and iii) contribution towards coherence across supranational courts on international maritime terrorism and maritime security
