Time-Evolution of the Power Spectrum of the Black Hole X-ray Nova XTE J1550-564
We have studied the time evolution of the power spectrum of XTE J1550-564,
using X-ray luminosity time series data obtained by the Rossi X-Ray Timing
Explorer satellite. A number of important practical fundamental issues arise in
the analysis of these data, including dealing with time-tagged event data,
removal of noise from a highly non-stationary signal, and comparison of
different time-frequency distributions. We present two new methods to
understand the time frequency variations, and compare them to the dynamic power
spectrum of Homan et al. All of the approaches provide evidence that the QPO

Instantaneous spectrum estimation of event-based densities
We present a method for obtaining a time-varying spectrum that is particularly suited when the data are in event-based form. This form arises in many areas of science and engineering, and especially in astronomy, where one has photon counting detectors. The method presented consists of three procedures. First, estimating the density using the kernel method; second, highpass filtering the manifestly positive density; finally, obtaining the time-frequency distribution with a modified Welch′s method. For the sake of validation event-based data are generated from a given distribution and the proposed method is used to construct the time-frequency spectrum and is compared to the original density. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the method
Semi-Classical Description of Antiproton Capture on Atomic Helium
A semi-classical, many-body atomic model incorporating a momentum-dependent
Heisenberg core to stabilize atomic electrons is used to study antiproton
capture on Helium. Details of the antiproton collisions leading to eventual
capture are presented, including the energy and angular momentum states of
incident antiprotons which result in capture via single or double electron
ionization, i.e. into [He or He], and the
distribution of energy and angular momentum states following the Auger cascade.
These final states are discussed in light of recently reported, anomalously

Palomar 13: An Unusual Stellar System in the Galactic Halo
We have measured Keck/HIRES radial velocities for 30 candidate red giants in
the direction of Palomar 13: an object traditionally cataloged as a compact,
low-luminosity globular cluster. From a sample of 21 confirmed members, we find
a systemic velocity of 24.1 km/s and a projected, intrinsic velocity dispersion
of 2.2 km/s. Although small, this dispersion is several times larger than that
expected for a globular cluster of this luminosity and central concentration.
Taken at face value, this dispersion implies a mass-to-light ratio of ~ 40 (in
solar units) based on the best-fit King-Michie model. The surface density
profile of Palomar 13 also appears to be anomalous among Galactic globular
clusters -- depending upon the details of background subtraction and
model-fitting, Palomar 13 either contains a substantial population of
"extra-tidal" stars, or it is far more spatially extended than previously
suspected. The full surface density profile is equally well-fit by a
King-Michie model having a high concentration and large tidal radius, or by a
NFW model. We examine -- and tentatively reject -- a number of possible
explanations for the observed characteristics of Palomar 13 (e.g., velocity
"jitter" among the red giants, spectroscopic binary stars, non-standard mass
functions, modified Newtonian dynamics), and conclude that the two most
plausible scenarios are either catastrophic heating during a recent
perigalacticon passage, or the presence of a massive dark halo. Thus, the
available evidence suggests that Palomar 13 is either a globular cluster which
is now in the process of dissolving into the Galactic halo, or a faint,

Some peculiarities of motion of neutral and charged test particles in the field of a spherically symmetric charged object in General Relativity
We propose the method of investigation of radial motions for charged and
neutral test particles in the Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m field by means of mass
potential. In this context we analyze special features of interaction of
charges and their motions in General Relativity and construct the radial motion
classification. For test particles and a central source with charges and
, respectively, the conditions of attraction (when ) and repulsion
(when ) are obtained. The conditions of motionless test particle states
with respect to the central source are investigated and, in addition, stability
conditions for such static equilibrium states are found. It is shown that
stable states are possible only for the bound states of weakly charged
particles in the field of a naked singularity. Frequencies of small
oscillations of test particles near their equilibrium positions are also found.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure
Gleam: the GLAST Large Area Telescope Simulation Framework
This paper presents the simulation of the GLAST high energy gamma-ray
telescope. The simulation package, written in C++, is based on the Geant4
toolkit, and it is integrated into a general framework used to process events.
A detailed simulation of the electronic signals inside Silicon detectors has
been provided and it is used for the particle tracking, which is handled by a
dedicated software. A unique repository for the geometrical description of the
detector has been realized using the XML language and a C++ library to access

The return trip effect: Why the return trip often seems to take less time
Three studies confirm the existence of the return trip effect: The return trip often seems shorter than the initial trip, even though the distance traveled and the actual time spent traveling are identical. A pretest shows that people indeed experience a return trip effect regularly, and the effect was found on a bus trip (Study 1), a bicycle trip (Study 2), and when participants watched a video of someone else traveling (Study 3). The return trip effect also existed when another, equidistant route was taken on the return trip, showing that it is not familiarity with the route that causes this effect. Rather, it seems that a violation of expectations causes this effect
X-ray emission during the muonic cascade in hydrogen
We report our investigations of X rays emitted during the muonic cascade in
hydrogen employing charge coupled devices as X-ray detectors. The density
dependence of the relative X-ray yields for the muonic hydrogen lines (K_alpha,
K_beta, K_gamma) has been measured at densities between 0.00115 and 0.97 of
liquid hydrogen density. In this density region collisional processes dominate
the cascade down to low energy levels. A comparison with recent calculations is
given in order to demonstrate the influence of Coulomb deexcitation.Comment: 5 pages, Tex, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letter
Effective theory of the Delta(1232) in Compton scattering off the nucleon
We formulate a new power-counting scheme for a chiral effective field theory
of nucleons, pions, and Deltas. This extends chiral perturbation theory into
the Delta-resonance region. We calculate nucleon Compton scattering up to
next-to-leading order in this theory. The resultant description of existing
p cross section data is very good for photon energies up to about 300
MeV. We also find reasonable numbers for the spin-independent polarizabilities
